High school roundup for Dec. 11, 2018: Upper St. Clair tops No. 1 Pine-Richland

Chris Pantelis came through with a three-point play with less than 2 seconds remaining to give Upper St. Clair a 51-48 victory over Class 6A No. 1 Pine-Richland in a nonsection boys basketball game Tuesday.

Pantelis finished with 15 points, and Tanner Gensler added 10 for the Panthers (3-0).

Dan Petcash scored 18 points for Pine-Richland (1-2).

Allderdice 70, Central Catholic 44 — Jackson Blaufield and Blake Haber each had 15 points to lead Allderdice (2-1) to a nonsection win.

Bethel Park 71, Trinity 66 — Ryan Meis scored 25 points to lead Bethel Park (3-0) to a nonsection triumph. Michael Koroly scored 26 points for Trinity (0-3).

Elizabeth Forward 65, McGuffey 52 — Evan Lewis had 21 points to help Elizabeth Forward (1-2) win a nonsection game.

Frazier 77, Chartiers-Houston 58 — Luke Santo hit six 3-pointers, scored 29 points and had 10 rebounds to help Frazier (1-2) earn a nonsection victory.

Keystone Oaks 54, Carrick 49 — Frank Stumpo had 24 points to lead Keystone Oaks (1-1) to a nonsection win. The Golden Eagles were 10 for 10 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.

Moon 71, McKeesport 54 — Donovan Johnson and Jioni Smith each scored 18 points to guide Class 5A No. 3 Moon (3-0) to a nonsection win.

Mt. Lebanon 65, North Allegheny 56 — Sean Loughran had 19 points and Hayden Mitchell added 14 as Class 6A No. 4 Mt. Lebanon (3-0) won a nonsection game. Mike Iuzillino had 20 points for North Allegheny (1-2).

Peters Township 67, New Castle 61 — Colin Cote had 24 points, and Dax Ploskina added 16 as Peters Township (2-1) won a nonsection matchup. Sheldon Cox scored 15 for Class 4A No. 2 New Castle (2-1).

Quaker Valley 63, Albert Gallatin 39 — Danny Conlan had 30 points to lift Class 4A No. 1 Quaker Valley (3-0) to a nonsection victory.

Ringgold 62, Connellsville 52 — Chris Peccon had 28 points to lead Ringgold (2-1) to a nonsection victory.

Sewickley Academy 73, Serra Catholic 69 — Nate Ridgeway scored 20 points to vault Class 2A No. 1 Sewickley Academy (1-2) to a nonsection win over Class 2A No. 4 Serra Catholic (1-2).

Don Belt had 18 points, Isiah Warfield scored 16, and Max Belt added 15 for the Panthers.

Jimmy Moon scored 43 points for Serra Catholic.

Norwin 88, Monessen 59 — The Norwin boys basketball got plenty of scoring and the Knights spread it around in a victory in the opening round of the Mike Rettger tournament at Franklin Regional.

Jayden Walker had 21 points, Nick Fleming scored 19, Ty Bilinsky tallied 15, and Gianni Rizzo poured in 11 for the Knights (3-0), who will play host Franklin Regional in the championship game at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Devin Whitlock scored 20 points to lead Monessen (0-2), which will play Westinghouse at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the consolation game. Franklin Regional (3-0) defeated Westinghouse, 74-37, in the second game of the tournament doubleheader.

Greensburg CC 61, East Allegheny 59 – Geoff Helm scored 32 points, and Joel LoNigro added 17 to guide Greensburg Central Catholic (2-0) to a nonsection win.

Hempfield 55, Uniontown 49 (OT) – Christian Zilli hit 4 of 5 free throws in overtime to lead Hempfield (2-1) to a nonsection victory. Marcus McCarthy had 11 points for the Spartans, who made 7 of 9 free throws in overtime.

Jeannette 48, Shady Side Academy 47 — AJ Sharp had 17 points, including four key free throws in the final minute, to lead Class 2A No. 3 Jeannette (2-1) to a nonsection win. Asher Tayal had 14 points Shady Side Academy (1-2).

Penn-Trafford 63, Armstrong 52 — Kevin Stinelli had 27 points, including five 3-pointers, and Brayden Puskar added 15 as Penn-Trafford (3-0) picked up a nonsection victory. Stinelli had five 3-pointers.

Summit Academy 77, Yough 58 — Gamal Marballie had 17 points, and Jarett Bach added 16 for Yough (2-1) in a nonsection loss.

Waynesburg 59, Southmoreland 39 — Lucas Garber scored 19 points as Waynesburg (2-1) won a nonsection game. Cade Richter scored 15 for Southmoreland (1-2).

Ligonier Valley 78, Penns Manor 57 — In the Heritage Conference opener, Marrek Paola had 32 points and 18 rebounds, and Michael Marinchak had 14 points and seven assists to lead Ligonier Valley (3-0, 1-0) to victory.

Leechburg 78, Burrell 45 — Leechburg jumped out to a 24-point halftime lead and didn’t let up in a nonsection win.

Dylan Cook scored a game-high 24 points for the Blue Devils (2-1), who also got double-figure scoring efforts from Eli Rich (13), John Miskinis (12) and Jake Blumer (10).

Andrew Bigler finished with 19 points, Seth Fischbach added 11 and Logan Bitar 10 for Burrell (1-3).

Freeport 72, Mohawk 68 — Jalen Brown had 20 points to lead Freeport (3-1) to a nonsection victory at Mohawk (0-4). Nolan Plocki and Vinnie Clark scored 13 points apiece for the Yellowjackets, and Garret Schaffhauser added 11 points.

Riverview 72, Aquinas Academy 33 — The Raiders’ Noah Black drained seven 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 23 points to help Riverview rout Aquinas Academy in a nonsection matchup. Jack Stock and Nate Black both finished with 13 points, and Gideon Deasy added 10 for Riverview (2-0). Johnathan Bates scored a team-high 13 points for Aquinas (2-1).

Woodland Hills 66, Fox Chapel 63 (OT) — Ryan Kerr led three Fox Chapel players in double figures with 16 points, but the Foxes couldn’t overcome a 35-point effort by Woodland Hills’ Keandre Bowles in a nonsection loss. Eli Yofan had 13 points for the Foxes (2-1) and Sam Brown had 10 points. Markeife Harvey added 17 points for the Wolverines (2-1).

Ambridge 41, Deer Lakes 38 Deer Lakes (1-2) held the lead late in the fourth quarter, but Ambridge’s 6-for-6 performance at the free-throw line in the final quarter lifted the Bridgers to a win in a nonsection matchup. Aaron Hilzendeger scored a game-high 13 points for Ambridge (2-1).

Hampton 55, Knoch 51 — The teams were tied at 34 going into the fourth quarter, but Hampton outscored the Knights 21-17 in the final frame to down nonsection rival Knoch. Scott Fraser led Knoch (1-2) with 18 points and Julian Sanks added 16. Colby Mignogna led Hampton (2-1) with a game-high 20 points.

Butler 78, Plum 60 — Ethan Morton scored a game-high 25 points, surpassing 1,000 in his career, as Class 6A No. 3 Butler (3-0) topped Plum in a nonsection matchup. Ian Dryburgh led Plum (0-3) with 13 points, Connor Moss and Matt Carroll both finished with 12 points apiece, and Lamar Whiting added 11.

First Baptist Christian School 49, Cheswick Christian Academy 46 —Andrew Drake scored 12 points for Cheswick Christian Academy (0-3) in a nonsection loss. Ben Drake led First Baptist (1-4) with 35 points. Josiah Ivanov added 10 points for Cheswick.

Girls basketball

Elizabeth Forward 55, McKeesport 42 — Bri Spirnak had 22 points and surpassed 1,000 for her career as Class 4A No. 3 Elizabeth Forward (2-1, 1-0) earned a Section 3-4A win at McKeesport (1-2, 0-1).

Bethel Park 67, Shaler 36 — Olivia Westphal scored 21 points to guide Bethel Park (3-0) to a nonsection win.

West Allegheny 70, North Hills 36 — Hannah Lindemuth and Patience Ashaolu each scored 15 points, and Grace Faulk and Claire Mercurio both had 14 to guide West Allegheny (3-0) to a nonsection win.

Yough 40, Bentworth 32 — Kaylyn Odelli had 15 points and Corrin Parquette added 12 as Yough (1-3) won a nonsection game to snap a 37-game losing streak. Odelli made 7 of 10 free throws in the final minutes.

Brentwood 71, Belle Vernon 59 — Anna Betz’s 20 points lifted Brentwood (3-0) to a nonsection victory. Lindsay Steeber had 22 points, and Grace Henderson added 14 for Belle Vernon (0-3).

Franklin Regional 42, Butler 32 — Franklin Regional (2-1) led 25-17 at halftime and held on for a nonsection win. Jordan Yaniga had 16 points, and Cali Konek added 14 for the Panthers.

Gateway 50, Penn-Trafford 48 — Lexi Jackson had 22 points, and Mary Kromka added 14 as Gateway (3-0) won a nonsection matchup. Bella Long had 14 for Penn-Trafford (1-2), which led 18-11 in the first quarter but was outscored 24-18 in the second half.

Greensburg Central Catholic 65, Winchester Thurston 30 — Melina Maietta had 22 points, and Bella Skatell added 21 as Greensburg Central Catholic (3-0) won a nonsection game.

Norwin 63, Blackhawk 61 (OT) — Olivia Gribble had 22 points, Jessica Kolesar had 15 and Emily Brozeski added 13 as Norwin (3-0) won a nonsection game in overtime.

Southmoreland 48, Greensburg Salem 44 — Maggie Moore had 15 points, and Charity Henderson scored 10 as Southmoreland (4-0) won a nonsection game.

Megan Kallock scored 19 for Greensburg Salem (1-2).

Fox Chapel 56, Woodland Hills 50 — Claire Fenton had 16 points and connected on four 3-pointers to help Fox Chapel (3-1) earn a nonsection victory. Ellie Schwartzman scored 15 points for the Foxes. Nya Morris led Woodland Hills (0-3) with 18 points.

Allderdice 55, Plum 49 — Kelsi Zik had a game-high 16 points for Plum (0-3) in a nonsection loss. Zik connected on four 3-pointers. Sidney Lightning paced Allderdice (2-2) with 14 points. Kennedie Montue scored 10 points for the Mustangs.
