High school roundup for Dec. 13, 2023: Top-ranked Canon-McMillan, Burgettstown wrestlers fend off challenges

No. 1 Burgettstown won the final six bouts to rally for a 44-24 victory over Jefferson-Morgan after trailing 24-15 after seven matches in Section 1-2A wrestling Wednesday night.

Darius Simmons (107) and Parker Sentipal (133) had pins, Daniel Smith (121) and Dylan Slovick (127) won by major decision and Joseph Baronick (285) took a decision during Burgettstown’s run. Gaven Suica (139) and Rudy Brown (152) had pins and Logan Noyes (145) won by decision for the Blue Devils (2-0, 2-0) earlier in the match.

Chase Frameli (160), Grant Hathaway (172), Brock Bayles (189) and Adam McAnany (215) had pins in four straight bouts for Jefferson-Morgan (0-2, 0-2).

Canon-McMillan 46, Waynesburg 29 – Andrew Binni (127), Josiah Gardner (145), Tanner Mizenko (114) and Collier Hartman (121) recorded pins and Brayden Collins (172) won by major decision to lead No. 1 Canon-McMillan (1-0) in a nonsection matchup of top teams in Class 3A.

No. 4 Waynesburg (0-1) also won five bouts, getting pins from Xavier Harmon (139), Daniel Huffman (152), Brock Evans (160) and Jacob Stephenson (189) and a technical fall from Joseph Simon (133), but forfeited three weights. The Raiders led 29-16 with five matches to go.

Carlynton 42, South Park 12 – Dominic Ciabattoni (133), Thomas Gargis (145), Braiden Sudor (215) and Henry Barbisch (285) recorded pins and Ahmad Baktiiar Uulu (127) and Cameron Seitz (160) won decisions for Carlynton (1-1, 1-1) in a Section 3-2A win. Wyatt Markovich (172) had a pin for South Park (3-4, 0-3).

Derry 66, Valley 6 – Anthony Mucci (114), Brett Klim (127), Zander Nuttal (139) and Mason Horwat (152) recorded pins to lead Derry (5-2, 2-0) to a Section 6-2A victory. Josue Martinez (133) had a pin for Valley (1-1, 1-1).

Fox Chapel 47, Pine-Richland 26 – Samuel Ummer (145), Andrew Kratsa (152) and Milo Chiu (160) recorded falls in three straight bouts to spark Fox Chapel (6-1) to a nonsection win. Landon Funk (114), Daniel Noel (127), Joseph Geller (189) and D’Angelo Hamilton (285) also had pins and Michael Worsen (121) won by tech fall for the Foxes. Spencer Vaughn (172) and Cole Wilson (215) won by fall, Dominic Ferraro (139) had a tech fall and Robert Hoy (133) won in overtime for Pine-Richland (1-1).

Ligonier Valley 36, Greensburg Salem 36 – Greensburg Salem lost a Section 6-2A dual meet by the narrowest of margins for the second straight week, tying Ligonier Valley but losing on the ninth tiebreaking criteria, most near-fall points. The Golden Lions (0-2, 0-2) also lost their section opener last week to Valley via tiebreaking criteria. Aiden Mulheren (145), Jake Mundorff (172) and Lucas Krieger (215) had pins to lead Ligonier Valley (1-6, 1-1). Nick Reinhart (121), Jordan Anker (152) and Gabriel Doppleheuer (160) won by fall for Greensburg Salem.

Indiana 72, Riverview 5 – Tuscan Blystone (145), Will Turner (160) and Dominic Fanella (172) won by fall to lead Indiana (2-1, 1-0) to a Section 6-2A win. Alex Wylly (152) won by tech fall for Riverview (0-2, 0-2).

Knoch 60, North Catholic 18 – Jarrett Crowe (121), Cameron Elliott (139), Brayden McGowan (145), Owen Layhew (152), Derrick Glover (160) and Parker Anderson (285) won by fall and Braylee Ireland prevailed by injury default as Knoch (2-1, 1-0) won in Section 5-2A. Logan Brethauer (127), Angelo Amelio (133) and Justin Veres (189) had pins for North Catholic (0-2, 0-2).

Plum 63, Gateway 6 – Owen Campbell (121), Samuel Snyder (133), Trent Reese (152), Antonio Walker (160), Jack Tongel (172) and Frank Grazulis (285) all recorded pins as Plum (4-2) defeated Gateway (1-4) in a nonsection match. Dylan Overlash (145) won by tech fall and Julien Sepelyak (189) won by major decision for the Mustangs. Jacob Pawlowski (215) had a pin for the Gators.

Girls wrestling

Pine-Richland 42, Fox Chapel 30 – Caitlin Verba (124), Giada Campanella (142) and Jarah Casciani (148) recorded pins to lead Pine-Richland. Mira Owens (118), Yuqi Zhou (130), Lily McLaughlin (136) and Elaine Huang (155) won by fall for Fox Chapel.

Boys basketball

Aliquippa 71, Beaver Falls 35 – Led by 12 points from Joshua Pratt, 11 from Quentin Goode and 10 from Qa’lil Goode, Aliquippa (1-0) took a 25-9 lead in the first quarter and won its nonsection season opener. Di’Nari Harris led Beaver Falls (0-2) with 16 points.

Central Catholic 54, Neighborhood Academy 49 – Peter Gonzalez scored 11 points and Bradley Gompers finished with 10 for Central Catholic (1-2) in a nonsection win. Courtney Wallace scored a game-high 23 points and sank four 3-pointers for Neighborhood Academy (4-1).

Charleroi 48, California 38 – Bryce Large put up 18 points and Jake Chambers added 12 for Charleroi (1-4) in a nonsection win. Jacob Ziolecki scored 14 points and Vinny Manzella tossed in 10 for California (0-4).

Cheswick Christian 59, Redeemer Lutheran 39 – Joseph Rosio and Sean Louis scored 15 points apiece and Cheswick Christian (5-1) took control with a 19-2 run to start the game. Jesse Van Wyk led Redeemer Lutheran with 25 points.

Derry 65, Freeport 58 – Nate Papuga scored 28 points to lead Derry (5-1) to a nonsection win. Stanley Rajkovich added 13 and Brady Angus had 12 for the Trojans. Brady Sullivan scored 18 points and Gavin Glista had 15 for Freeport (2-3).

Gateway 62, Woodland Hills 36 – Alec Dunsmore finished with 14 points and Vito Campolo added 10 for Gateway (5-1) in a nonsection win. Scoop Smith put up 15 to lead Woodland Hills (2-2).

Greensburg Central Catholic 73, Berlin Brothersvalley 64 – Tyree Turner put up 31 points and Franco Alvarez followed with 20 to lead Greensburg Central (5-1) to a nonsection win. Pace Prosser buried seven 3-pointers and finished with 31 points and Craig Jarvis had 21 points for Berlin Brothersvalley (3-1).

Indiana 61, Windber 43 – Aaron Webb led all scorers with 17 points, Stanford Webb added 12 and Evan Brocious finished with 11 as Indiana (2-2) beat Windber in nonsection play. Evan Brady scored 12 for Windber.

Jeannette 46, Steel Valley 41 – Markus McGowan hit five 3-pointers and scored 19 points and Kymone Brown added 11 points to lead Jeannette (4-2) to a nonsection win. Nate Yuhas scored 17 and Rasaun Howell added 16 for Steel Valley (0-6).

Monessen 84, Aquinas Academy 80 – Lorenzo Gardner led all scorers with 36 points, Timothy Kershaw finished with 19 and Devontae Robinson produced 16 points as Monessen (3-1) edged Aquinas Academy (4-1) in nonsection play. Sam Duer put up 27 points, Jacob Guillen added 22 and David Zaharko chipped in 10 for the Crusaders.

Shaler 66, Sto-Rox 25 – Keegan Smetanka scored 15 points, Julian Vizzoca followed with 13 and Sam Himrod chipped in 10 as Shaler (5-0) cruised to a nonsection win against Sto-Rox (1-3).

Shenango 68, Riverside 42 – Brody McQuiston made six 3-pointers and finished with 24 points and Jimmy Roe tossed in 16 to lead Shenango (3-2) to a nonsection win over Riverside (2-4).

South Fayette 66, Beaver 56 – Michael Plasko made three 3-pointers and finished with 25 points and Gavin Orosz followed with 23 as South Fayette (3-2) beat Beaver (2-3) in nonsection play. Brady Mayo dropped 23 points while Ty Butler and Nick Krzeczowksi each scored 10 for the Bobcats.

West Mifflin 80, Brentwood 54 – Daven Reynolds dropped 23 points and Braeden Walker scored 12 for West Mifflin (4-2) in a nonsection win. Ian Harrington finished with 18 points and Shane Palmer followed with 16 for Brentwood (2-4).

Winchester Thurston 69, Apollo-Ridge 43 – Matt Southers led all scorers with 13 points, Anthony Pipkin and Charlie Tea scored 11 points apiece and Michael Hammerling added 10 for Winchester Thurston (3-1) in a nonsection victory. Karter Schrock scored nine points to pace Apollo-Ridge (0-6).

Girls basketball

Beaver Falls 64, Central Valley 61 (OT) – Taylor Pullen put up 23 points, Avina Norman added 20 and Dreaven Haskins produced 13 to lead Beaver Falls (4-0) to a nonsection overtime win. Nyah Hayes had 23 points to lead Central Valley (2-2).

Berlin Brothersvalley 50, Greensburg Central Catholic 47 – Coral Prosser dropped 22 points to lead Berlin Brothersvalley (3-2) to a nonsection win. Erica Gribble scored 21 points and Mya Morgan finished with 12 for Greensburg Central (2-2).

Burgettstown 50, Yough 32 – Kaitlyn Nease had 26 points and 10 rebounds to power Burgettstown (3-2) to a nonsection victory. Autumn Matthews had 13 points and Hailey Bock added 11 for Yough (4-2).

Clairton 87, Sto-Rox 33 – Iyanna Wade produced a double-double, dropping 43 points and dishing out 11 assists, as Clairton (5-0) rolled to a nonsection win. Jamiya Childs added 20 points, while Keira Brown and Karma Fuqua each chipped in with 10 points. Rae Johnston scored 14 points and Allie Dotson added 11 for Sto-Rox (2-3).

Greensburg Salem 54, South Allegheny 11 – Kaitlyn Mankins scored 13 points and Ashlan Price added 11 to lead Greensburg Salem (3-1) to a nonsection win. Gabi Jackson hit a pair of 3-pointers for South Allegheny (2-4).

Hempfield 68, Ringgold 28 – Sarah Podkul scored 16 points, Allie Cervola added 13 and Mia Shipman finished with 12 as Hempfield (4-1) built on a 22-4 first-quarter lead to defeat Ringgold (1-3) in nonsection play. Kamryn Webb led the Rams with 16 points.

Leechburg 29, East Allegheny 28 – Adalyn Zanotto scored 14 points and Olivia Vigna added eight to lead Leechburg (4-1) to a nonsection victory. Ronniya Lawrence scored 15 for East Allegheny (0-5).

Obama Academy 41, Ellis School 26 – Taylor Phillips scored a game-high 19 points and Gionna Simons added 13 to lead Obama Academy (1-2) to a nonsection win. Angelina Jones scored 12 points for Ellis (3-3).

Redeemer Lutheran 48, Cheswick Christian 13 – Jordan Mitchell scored 16 points and Anna Van Wyk added 14 to lead Redeemer Lutheran past Cheswick Christian (1-3).

Riverside 51, Ambridge 35 – DeLana Fox scored a career-high 20 points, Gabriella Finch added 10 points and Emma Thellman had 11 as Riverside (3-2) beat Ambridge (1-5) in nonsection play. Alivea Bupp scored 13 points for the Bridgers.

Seton LaSalle 64, Bishop Canevin 37 – Mallory Daly dropped 27 points, Tiara Curry followed with 19 and Addie Lonergan had 11 as Seton LaSalle (3-2) doubled up Bishop Canevin (2-4) in nonsection play. Isabella Sysak scored 11 points to lead the Crusaders.

Union 57, OLSH 33 – Kelly Cleaver scored 20 points and Kylie Fruehstorfer made three 3-pointers and finished with 16 points as Union (3-2) defeated OLSH (4-2) in nonsection play. Claudia Ierullo scored 18 points to lead the Chargers.
