High school roundup for Dec. 7, 2023: Neshannock girls rally past Freedom

Payton Newman and Sophia Bonner scored 14 points apiece to lead Neshannock to a 54-47 victory over Freedom in nonsection girls basketball Thursday night.

Kaitlyn Fries added 11 for the Lancers (3-1), who rallied from a three-point deficit by outscoring the Bulldogs 20-10 in the fourth quarter. Shaye Bailey led Freedom (0-3) with 27 points.

Aquinas Academy 60, Seton LaSalle 54 – Victoria Taylor led with 20 points and Violet Johnson followed with 19 to help Aquinas Academy (4-0) past Seton LaSalle (2-1) in a nonsection win. Mallory Daly scored 26 points and Tiara Curry had 16 for the Rebels.

Beaver County Christian 46, Propel Braddock Hills 18 – Audrey Michalik scored 16 points and Emma Michalik and Briley Mozley added 10 points each to lead Beaver County Christian. Jasmin Smith led Propel Braddock Hills with six points.

Belle Vernon 56, California 43 – Kenzi Seliga scored 18 points and Caroline Lee had 10 for Belle Vernon (2-1) in a nonsection win. Rakiyah Porter led California (1-1) with 18 points and Hayley Gibson had 10.

Burrell 54, Southmoreland 14 – Casey Brancato scored 15 points to lead Burrell (2-0) past Southmoreland (0-3) in a nonsection game. Julianna Fisher (11 points, 10 rebounds) and Anna Clark (10 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists) each had double-doubles.

Carlynton 44, Avella 37 – Lucy Vetter scored 18 points, Jocelyn Griffin had 14 and Carlee Hughes added 12 to lead Carlynton (3-1) to a nonsection win. Haleigh Rush scored 16 points and Ava Frank had 12 for Avella (0-3).

Central Valley 66, New Castle 40 – Mia Dinello scored 13 points and Dominique Douglas and Nyah Hayes added 11 each to lead Central Valley (2-0) to a nonsection win. Rihanna Boice scored 28 and Raegan Hudson had 14 for New Castle (0-4).

Chartiers-Houston 44, Burgettstown 35 – Allison Wingard led Chartiers-Houston (2-2) with 17 points in a nonsection win. Paige Klodowski scored 11 points and Kaitlyn Nease and Savanna Rush added 10 points apiece for Burgettstown (2-3).

Chartiers Valley 55, Armstrong 34 – Ella Cupka scored 16 points and Emma Reynolds had 10 for Chartiers Valley (3-0) in a nonsection win. Emma Paul led Armstrong (3-1) with 18 points and Kyla Fitzgerald had 10.

Clairton 58, South Allegheny 42 – Iyonna Wade led with 33 points and Keira Brown and Janice Childs added 10 points apiece to lead Clairton (4-0) past South Allegheny (2-2) in a nonsection win. Gabi Jackson scored 23 points with seven 3-pointers for the Gladiators.

Derry 55, East Allegheny 26 – Led by 19 points from Jane Huss, 14 from Samantha Gruska and 10 from Haylee Myers, Derry (2-2) picked up a nonsection win. Ronniya Lawrence led East Allegheny (0-4) with 10.

Ellwood City 46, Hopewell 43 – Delaney Sturgeon scored 16 points, Kayla Jones had 14 and Claire Noble added 12 for Ellwood City (3-1) in a nonsection win. Caylee Sundy scored 14 points for Hopewell (2-3).

Freeport 49, Deer Lakes 29 – Morgan Croney scored 22 points and Jaden Gailot added 16 to lead Freeport (1-3) to a nonsection win. Sophia Laurenza scored nine points for Deer Lakes (1-3).

Keystone Oaks 55, Brentwood 27 – Bailey Rieg led Keystone Oaks (4-1) with 18 points, Payton Hamilton added 11 and Fran Pacak had 10 in a nonsection win. Mia March scored 16 points for Brentwood (1-3).

Kiski Area 48, Butler 38 – Abbie Johns had 20 points and Cora Coleman scored 10 to pace Kiski Area (3-1) in a nonsection win. Amelia McMichael led Butler (1-2) with nine points.

Knoch 45, Hampton 38 – Naturelle Ewing scored 15 points and Adah Fuller had 14 to lead Knoch (2-2) to a nonsection win over Hampton (1-3). Megan Murray led the Talbots with 12 points.

Mars 54, Franklin Regional 47 – Cecilia Christy led with 13 points, Carmella McDole followed with 12, Vita Vargo had 11 and Alexis Cashdollar added 10 for Mars (3-1) in a nonsection win. Olivia Orndoff scored 17 points and Toryn Fulton had 16 for Franklin Regional (0-3).

McGuffey 58, Uniontown 28 – Taylor Schumacher scored 18 points and Alexis Ewig had 13 for McGuffey (3-0) in a nonsection win. Geelece Ingram scored 11 points for Uniontown (1-3).

Moon 56, Quaker Valley 28 – Jaden Griggs scored 30 points and Leilana Rucker added 10 to lead Moon (2-0) to a nonsection win. Mimi Thiero led Quaker Valley (0-3) with 24 points.

Mt. Pleasant 32, Yough 28 – Riley Gesinski scored 10 points to help Mt. Pleasant (3-1) to a nonsection victory. Autumn Matthews led Yough (3-1) with 19 points.

North Hills 54, West Allegheny 37 – Olivia Waters led North Hills (3-1) with 18 points and Gianna Sturdivant added 16 in a nonsection win. Alaina Holtz scored 18 points and Emma Ruperto had 14 for West Allegheny (1-3).

OLSH 57, Allderdice 37 – Claudia Ierullo scored 18 points and Morgan O’Brien added 15 to lead OLSH (3-1) to a nonsection win over Allderdice (2-3).

Peters Township 57, Montour 27 – Gemma Walker scored 18 points to lead Peters Township (3-0) to a nonsection win. Tiffany Miller led Montour (2-1) with 15 points.

Propel Montour 50, Cornerstone Christian 31 – Brooklyn Sykes scored 16 points and KaNiyah Barbour added 14 in a win for Propel Montour.

Rochester 47, Laurel 30 – Tia Yellock led with 15 points and Kamryn Newman added eight for Rochester (2-1) in a nonsection win. Maelee Hill and Macey Cwynar scored eight points apiece for Laurel (1-3).

Seneca Valley 70, Fox Chapel 61 – Natalie Hambly scored 19 points to lead Seneca Valley (1-2) to a nonsection win over Fox Chapel (2-2). Makayla Canty and Allison Sevin each added 15 and Emerson Peffer had 13 for the Raiders.

Serra Catholic 59, Elizabeth Forward 52 – Abby Genes scored 27 points and Cate Clark added 12 to lead Serra Catholic (4-0) to a nonsection win. Chloe Zombek led Elizabeth Forward (2-2) with 14 points.

South Park 45, Eden Christian 23 – Emily Mihelcic led South Park (3-0) with 11 points in a nonsection win. Ella D’Ippolito scored nine for Eden Christian (1-3).

Trinity 46, Bishop Canevin 17 – Sutton Williamson scored 10 points and Macie Justice had nine for Trinity (2-1) in a nonsection win over Bishop Canevin (1-2). Isabella Sysak led the Crusaders with 11 points.

Union 50, Shenango 11 – Kelly Cleaver scored 13 points to eclipse 1,000 for her career and Union (1-2) topped Shenango (1-2) in nonsection action.

Upper St. Clair 64, Thomas Jefferson 44 – Rylee Kalocay scored 28 points and Meredith Huzjak hit four 3-pointers to finish with 14 points as Upper St. Clair (2-2) picked up a nonsection win. Riley McCabe scored 17 and Laekyn Flinn added 12 for Thomas Jefferson (1-3).

Waynesburg 80, Frazier 14 – Kaley Rohanna had 21 points to help Waynesburg (4-0) cruise past Frazier (2-2) in nonsection play. Peyton Cowell added 14 points for the Raiders and Avery Davis scored 11.

West Mifflin 48, Connellsville 26 – Savaughn Wimbs scored 32 points to lead West Mifflin (2-2) to a nonsection win. Bailey Liska scored 13 for Connellsville (2-1).

Winchester Thurston 44, Ambridge 38 – DaShae Cochran (12), Jasmine Hollins (11) and Aleah Cooper (10) scored in double figures to help Winchester Thurston (1-2) get past Ambridge (0-4) in nonsection action.

Boys basketball

Albert Gallatin 66, Ringgold 56 – Mykel Belt led Albert Gallatin (2-2) with 18 points, JJ Jackson had 11 and Blake White added 10 in a nonsection win. Aidan Angotti and Keyshawn Goggins scored 16 points apiece for Ringgold (1-2).

Aquinas Academy 76, Leechburg 47 – Jake Guillen scored 26 points to lead Aquinas Academy (4-0) in a nonsection win. Sam Duer added 13 and Jonah Burchill had 11. Jayden Floyd led Leechburg (1-2) with 20 points. Rocco Vigna added 10 and Brady Rollinger hit three 3-pointers.

Armstrong 49, Obama Academy 39 – Jack Valasek scored 16 points and Jacob Szep had 10 for Armstrong (3-1) in a nonsection win. Torrien Perkins led Obama Academy (0-1) with 21 points.

Beaver County Christian 46, Propel Andrew Street 44 – Hunter Mozley scored 27 points to lead Beaver County Christian. Darryl McCullough led Propel Andrew Street with 17 points.

Butler 74, Kiski Area 65 – Braylon Littlejohn scored 27 points and Donovan Carney added 23, including five 3-pointers, as Butler (2-0) handed Kiski Area (3-1) its first loss in a nonsection matchup. Isaiah Gonzalez scored 28 and Colin Keller added 19 for the Cavaliers. They each made four 3-pointers.

Cheswick Christian Academy 54, Geibel 39 – Grant Rochkind scored 19 points and Brady Rochkind added 15 to lead Cheswick Christian Academy (2-1) to a nonsection win. Mike Miller led Geibel (0-3) with 16 points and Gary Tarbuk had 13.

Derry 66, Connellsville 55 – Nate Papuga led with 31 points, Stanley Rajkocich had 18 and John Wasnick added 10 to lead Derry (2-1) to a nonsection win. Anthony Piasecki scored 15 points and Jayden McBride had 13 for Connellsville (0-4).

Frazier 36, West Greene 30 – Darian Bateman scored 14 points and Dailan McManus added 11 to lead Frazier (1-3) to a nonsection win. Lane Allison led West Greene (1-1) with 12 points.

Hampton 72, Peters Township 68 – Peter Kramer led Hampton (3-0) with 30 points and Alex Nyilas added 14 in a nonsection win. Liam Mignogna had 13 points and Robert Coll had 11 for the Talbots. Jack Dunbar scored 17 points and Sean Thelk had 15 for Peters Township (2-2).

Highlands 75, Blackhawk 40 – Bradyn Foster had a double-double with 24 points and 13 rebounds to help Highlands (2-2) earn a nonsection win over Blackhawk (2-2). Cam Reigard added 16 points for the Golden Rams and Jordyn Tavarez scored 13. Justin Shanor scored 14 to lead Blackhawk and Nate Franitti added 10.

Springdale 62, Harvest Baptist 32 – Mason Gent scored 25 points and John Hughes and Robby Simmen each added 10 to lead Springdale (2-0) to a nonsection win. Stephen Boyce scored 18 for Harvest Baptist.

Hockey

Armstrong 7, Hempfield 4 – Colin Kutch and Jason Rullo scored twice each for Armstrong (3-6) in a Class 2A win. Alex Smillie and Max Short had two goals apiece for Hempfield (5-4).

Indiana 3, Quaker Valley 2 (OT) – Gabe Nettleton scored the overtime winner, Ash Lockard had a goal and an assist, and Garrett Goodrich added a goal for Indiana (8-1-2) in a Class A win. Jace Vasbinder had a goal and an assist for Quaker Valley (9-0-1), which suffered its first loss.

Meadville 6, Greensburg Salem 1 – Zach Schepner had two goals and two assists and Rocco Tartaglione added a goal and two assists to lead Meadville (8-3) to a Class A win. Chase Kusner scored for Greensburg Salem (7-4-1).

Morgantown 12, Sewickley Academy 1 – Ayden Sheppard had four goals and Morgantown (5-3) cruised to a Division 2 victory. Braeden Mitchell scored for Sewickley Academy (0-9-1).

Neshannock 5, Carrick 4 – Micah DeJulia scored two goals and Brian McConahy, Zander Telesz and Benn Hollen added a goal apiece to lead Neshannock (8-1) to a Varsity D2 win. Ivan Manculich scored two goals for Carrick (7-3).

Norwin 6, Fox Chapel 3 – Alex Thomas scored two of his three goals in the third period as Norwin (5-3-2) broke open a 3-3 game to win in Class 2A. Dom Cerilli had a goal and two assists, Aaron Varrati also scored a third-period goal, and Owen Burmeister made 39 saves for Norwin. Nate Sarra scored twice for Fox Chapel (6-5).

Penn-Trafford 3, Thomas Jefferson 2 – Bryce Kropczynski scored a pair of goals in the final eight minutes of the game to lead Penn-Trafford (4-4) to a comeback win in Class 2A. TJ Ferguson also scored and Cam Farrow made 36 saves for Penn-Trafford. Scott Allan scored twice for Thomas Jefferson (7-1), which suffered its first loss of the season.

Pine-Richland 5, Cathedral Prep 1 – Cullen Campbell and Zachary Howard each had a goal and an assist to lead Pine-Richland (7-2) to a Class 3A win. Tucker Kinnear scored for Cathedral Prep (3-6-2).

Ringgold 7, Wilmington 1 – Caden Doran scored four goals and Matt Sylvester had two goals and an assist for Ringgold (4-3-2) in a Varsity D2 win. Andrew Cartwright scored for Wilmington (2-7).

South Fayette 8, Franklin Regional 3 – Tyler Brandebura registered a hat trick and Nolan Murphy scored twice to propel South Fayette (5-1-1) to a Class 2A victory. Max Rutkowski had two goals for Franklin Regional (4-3-2).

Upper St. Clair 3, Central Catholic 1 – Connor McQuade scored two goals and Amir Alsahlani added one to lead Upper St. Clair (7-2) to a Class 3A win. Noah Hritz scored for Central Catholic (4-5).
