High school roundup for Jan. 16, 2019: Upper St. Clair boys rebound to beat Allderdice

The Upper St. Clair boys basketball team showed off its ability to rebound Wednesday night.

A day after losing their first game of the season to Section 2-6A rival Mt. Lebanon, the Panthers upset one of the state’s top teams, Allderdice, 58-51.

Chris Pantelis had 28 points, and Dave Pantelis added 10 to lead USC (14-1).

Allderdice (11-3) was led by Jackson Blaufeld’s 19 points.

Avonworth 69, New Brighton 59 — Deon Thomas had 25 points to lead Avonworth (10-4) to a nonsection win.

California 75, Beth-Center 64 — Malik Ramsey had 34 points as California (9-3) captured a nonsection victory.

Charleroi 47, Waynesburg 43 — Lee Zanardini had 17 points to pace Charleroi (8-6) in a nonsection triumph.

Steel Valley 68, Obama Academy 63 — Kameron Williams had 28 points, and Camden Polak added 22 as Steel Valley (7-7) won a nonsection game.

Southmoreland 78, Geibel 52 — Riley Comforti had 29 points to guide Southmoreland (8-6) to a nonsection win. It was the Scotties’ fourth straight win.

Ligonier Valley 91, Purchase Line 60 — Michael Marinchak tied a school record with 44 points to lead Ligonier Valley (15-1, 9-0) to a District 6 Heritage Conference victory.

Dick Knupp has held the school record since 1958.

Brentwood 59, Riverview 55 — Aiden Sebastian scored 14 points for Riverview (6-7) in a nonsection loss at Brentwood (6-7). Noah Black had 12 points for the Raiders, and Thanny Black and Gideon Deasy scored 11 apiece. C.J. Ziegler led Brentwood with 19 points.

Winchester Thurston 74, St. Joseph 64 (OT) — St. Joseph (11-4) outscored Winchester Thurston, 15-11, in the fourth quarter to get the game to overtime but lost a nonsection game. Grant Bendis had 19 points for the Spartans. Andrew Sullivan and Daniel Fábregas scored 16 apiece, and Matt Arvay added 11 points. Dusan Krivokapic led Winchester Thurston (8-5) with 25 points.

Girls basketball

Riverview 57, Springdale 8 — Sydney McDonough scored 14 points and set a new school record for career assists, surpassing the previous record of 249 in a Section 2-2A victory. Francesca Lio scored 18 points for the Raiders (5-8, 3-3), who led 31-0 at halftime. Brianna Thompson led Springdale (0-13, 0-6) with five points.

Serra Catholic 79, St. Joseph 15 — Anna Swierczewski had 12 points for St. Joseph (1-13) in a nonsection loss at Class 2A No. 2 Serra Catholic (11-2). Nicole Pawloski had 13 points for the Eagles, and Brianna Pasternak, Chloe Honick and Grace Navarro each added 10 points.

Monessen 49, Propel Andrew Street 34 — Qitarah Hardison and Sydney Caterino each had 12 points to lead Monessen (4-10) to a nonsection win.

Wrestling

Mt. Lebanon 36, Peters Township 33 — Michael Kail (138), Regis Wintermantel (220)and Nathan Hoaglund (285) all had pins to lead Mt. Lebanon (9-2, 5-0) to a Class AAA, Section 2B win. Mt. Lebanon finished first in Section 2B and will face Connellsville in the Section 2 tournament next Wednesday.

Thomas Jefferson 30, Connellsville 29 — The No. 6-ranked Jaguars (13-0, 5-0) edged Connnellsville to finish unbeaten in Class AAA, Section 2A and clinch first in the subsection. They will face Peters Township in the Section 2 tournament next Wednesday.

Seneca Valley 59, Pine-Richland 13 — No. 3-ranked Seneca Valley (6-2, 5-0) clinched the title in Class AAA, Section 3A with a win over the Rams. Jason Geyer (132), Antonio Amelio (145), Nick Montalbano (152) and Michael Adamson (170) had pins for the Raiders, who will face Hampton in the Section 3 tournament next Wednesday.

North Allegheny 39, Hampton 31 — Maximus Stedeford (138), Jon hoover (170) and Dylan Coy (106) all had pins, as North Allegheny (9-1, 5-0) locked up the Class AAA, Section 3B title. The Tigers will face Butler in the Section 3 tournament next Wednesday.

Quaker Valley 45, Avonworth 36 — Justin Richey (120), Conner Redinger (132), JohnRocco Kazalas (145) and Mason Diemert (152) all earned bonus points to lead No. 8 Quaker Valley (10-5, 4-1) to Class AA, Section 2B win. The Quakers finished second in the subsection.

Beth-Center 34, McGuffey 33 — In Class AAA, Section 1B, James Gwyer’s pin at 120 pounds helped No. 6 Beth-Center (9-3, 4-0) to a victory that locked up the subsection title. The match ended in a tie, but Beth-Center was awarded the tiebreaker point thanks to having the most pins.

Southmoreland 60, Frazier 19 — Southmoreland earned a shot at a WPIAL postseason berth with a win in the Class AA, Section 3B finale.

Nick Yeskey (138 pounds), Austin McBeth (152), Bret Huffman (220) and Colt Harper (285) all had pins to lead the Scotties (7-2, 3-2) to victory.

Southmoreland also won six bouts by forfeit.

The Scotties finished in third place in Section 3B and will take on Highlands in the Section 3 fifth-place match next Wednesday. The winner advances to the WPIAL team tournament.

Penn-Trafford 64, Central Catholic 6 — Nick Coy (145), Lukas Johnson (170) and John Bachar (182) all had pins as Penn-Trafford (2-3, 2-3) won in Class AAA, Section 1A. The Warriors, who fell short of a playoff berth, also won six bouts by forfeit.

Norwin 65, Plum 13 — Kurtis Phipps (120), John Altieri (138) and Bryce Long (170) earned pins as No. 7 Norwin (8-2, 4-1) secured a Class AAA, Section 1A victory to clinch second place in the subsection. Luke Passarelli won a technical fall decision for the Knights, who won seven bouts by forfeit.

Norwin will take on Hempfield in the Section 1 tournament next Wednesday.

Latrobe 68, Penn Hills 12 — Tyler Ross earned a pin at 195 pounds, and Gabe Willochel picked up a decision at 132 to lead Latrobe (4-2, 3-2) to a Class AAA, Section 1B victory. The Wildcats, who finished third in the subsection, won 10 bouts by forfeit.

Latrobe will face Franklin Regional in the Section 1 fifth-place match next Wednesday.

West Mifflin 59, Belle Vernon 18 — Logan Seliga (120), Logan Hoffman (170) and Scott Joll (182) had pins for Belle Vernon (0-5, 0-5) in a Class AAA, Section 2A loss.

Derry 63, Mt. Pleasant 18 – No. 3-ranked Derry (9-2, 5-0) locked up the Class AA, Section 3B title with a convincing victory. Kace Sabedra (113) and Ty Cymmerman (126) had pins for Derry.

Highlands 60, Summit Academy 21 — The Highlands wrestling team is one step away from the WPIAL Class AA playoffs.

The Golden Rams clinched a spot in next week’s Section 3 tournament with a victory.

Highlands, which wrapped up third place in the 3A subsection, will face 3B No. 3 Southmoreland for the fifth and final bid from the section to the WPIAL tournament.

Jrake Burford (120 pounds), Blake Clark (138), Jake Taliana (182), Ethan Jones (195) and Jeremiah Saunders (220) recorded falls for the Golden Rams (7-7, 3-2). Bryan Randolph (113), Evan Henry (132), Chase D’Angelo (145), Brock White (171) and Jeremiah Nelson (285) added forfeit wins.

Fox Chapel 47, North Hills 31 — Alex Wecht (160 pounds) and Steven Cano (182) earned pins for Fox Chapel in a Section 3-AAA win at North Hills. Avery Bursick (145) earned a 19-4 technical fall for the Foxes, who won five other matches by forfeit.
