High school roundup for Jan. 21, 2025: Baldwin keeps pace with win over Peters Township

Max Marzina scored 16 points as Baldwin kept pace with South Fayette atop Section 3-5A boys basketball with a 61-57 victory over Peters Township on Tuesday.

Evan Golvash had 11 points and Matt Schenk added 10 for the Highlanders (14-1, 6-1). Nick McCullough scored 13 points and Jake Wetzel had 12 for Peters (11-5, 5-3).

Belle Vernon 81, Yough 35 – Trevor Kovatch scored 18 points to lead Belle Vernon (12-4, 7-1) to a Section 3-4A win. Zion Moore added 11 and Tommy Davis chipped in 10 for the Leopards. Tyler Smith led Yough (1-16, 0-8) with eight points.

Butler 51, North Hills 39 – Stainton Forbes and Andrew Gettinger scored 14 points apiece and Ayden Andrews added 10 to lead Butler (11-5, 4-5) to a Section 1-6A win over North Hills (5-11, 4-5).

Central Valley 50, Shaler 45 – Isaiah Jeter scored 16 points and Gabe Raso added 14 to lead Central Valley (13-2) to a nonsection win. Jordan Epps scored 16 points and Deron Nixon and Josh Berger had 12 points apiece for Shaler (6-10).

Cheswick Christian Academy 66, Harvest Baptist Academy 23 – Brady Rochkind and Joseph Rosio scored 18 points apiece to lead Cheswick Christian (9-5) to a Southwestern Christian Athletic Conference win. Asa Connolly scored 10 for Harvest Baptist.

Deer Lakes 78, Valley 41 – Nathaniel Moore scored 23 points to lead Deer Lakes (14-3, 7-1) to a Section 1-4A win. Taireke Davis scored 12 for Valley (5-11, 0-8).

Eden Christian 78, Propel Braddock Hills 64 – Brady Salvia scored 21 points and James Wilkin added 20 to power Eden Christian (4-12, 3-5) in Section 2-2A. River Bartram added 18 and Mason Dean had 15. Bryalon Davis-Clay scored 18, Elijah Bagsby-Thornton had 11 and Raymon Russell chipped in 10 for Propel Braddock Hills (2-15, 0-8).

Elizabeth Forward 74, East Allegheny 45 – Tyler Basic scored 26 points, Daniel Spence had 18 and Cy Herchelroath added 12 to lead Elizabeth Forward (13-3, 6-1) to a Section 3-4A win. Cedrick Mack scored 15 points and Jayden Patterson had 10 for East Allegheny (4-12, 1-7).

Ellwood City 84, Riverside 59 – Jackson Kerr led Ellwood City (9-6, 5-2) with 21 points, Kaleb Servick followed with 19, Maykel Cuevas had 13 and Chris Smiley added 12 in a Section 1-3A win. Will Sullivan scored 23 points and Drake Fox had 18 for Riverside (7-11, 2-6).

Fort Cherry 71, Burgettstown 38 – Shane Cornali scored 16 points to lead five players in double figures for Fort Cherry (8-7, 6-3) in Section 3-2A. Ryan Huey had 15, Jack Kitzmiller added 11 and Evan Rogers and Gavin Grace each chipped in 10. Parker Romnes led Burgettstown (4-12, 1-8) with 12 points.

Fox Chapel 66, Pine-Richland 60 (OT) – Caden Kaiser led with 23 points, Grant Fenton followed with 13, Asher White had 11 and John Rehak added 10 to push Fox Chapel (12-4, 7-2) to a Section 1-6A win. Emery Moye scored 18 points and Alex Kastner had 17 for Pine-Richland (5-10, 3-6).

Franklin Regional 67, McKeesport 51 – Connor Crossey went off for 34 points and Jonah Johnston added 14 to lead Franklin Regional (7-9, 3-6) to a Section 1-5A victory. Lamont Perkins scored 14 and Darryl McCullough added 10 for McKeesport (5-11, 3-6).

Gateway 48, Laurel Highlands 44 – Mykel Bruce-McCrommon had 20 points and eight rebounds to lead Gateway (8-7, 6-3) to a Section 1-5A win. Aiden Black scored 15 and Antwan Black added 14 for Laurel Highlands (4-12, 1-8).

Geibel Catholic 87, Mt. Pleasant 67 – Evan Strimel led Geibel Catholic (9-6) with 20 points, Gary Tarbuk followed with 19, Seth Dolan had 14 and Eahn Stevenson added 12 in a nonsection win. Jonah Townsend scored 15 points, and Jordan Grieff added 12 for Mt. Pleasant (0-16).

Knoch 73, Burrell 47 – Jackson Bauman scored 21 points as all five starters finished in double figures for Knoch (12-4, 7-1) in a Section 1-4A win. Zane Pacek added 12, Teegan Finucan and Liam Avon each had 11 and Derek Lang chipped in 10. Tucker Bitar scored 19 points and Gavyn Orr added 16 for Burrell (6-9, 3-5).

Mars 70, Keystone Oaks 26 – Austin Wroblewski scored 16 points, Drew Navetta had 13 and Will Wilson added 11 to lead Mars (9-7) to a nonsection win. Joseph Colton and Erond Jakupi scored nine points apiece for Keystone Oaks (11-5).

Mohawk 62, New Brighton 21 – Bobby Fadden scored 24 points, Drew Wrona had 12 and Joey Nail added 11 to lead Mohawk (12-3, 6-1) to a Section 1-3A win. Dash Graham scored 12 points for New Brighton (4-9, 3-4).

Moon 65, Lincoln Park 35 – Braeden Stuart scored 16 points, Carter Tumulty had 13 and Michael Santicola and Amir Turner added 11 points apiece to lead Moon (13-3, 5-2) to a Section 4-5A win. Dionte Henry and Damar Johnson scored 14 points apiece for Lincoln Park (2-14, 0-8).

Neshannock 58, Shenango 47 – Tony Perotta led with 19 and Jake Rynd and David Kwiat added 11 points apiece to push Neshannock (13-2, 8-1) to a Section 4-2A win. Joe Campoli scored 14 points and Brayden George had 12 for Shenango (7-8, 5-4).

OLSH 64, Laurel 36 – Led by 16 points from Tiernan McCullough, 14 from Jake Johnson and 11 from Austin Avsec, OLSH (13-4, 8-1) picked up a Section 4-2A win. Jayden Iorio scored 19 for Laurel (8-9, 2-7).

Ringgold 71, Southmoreland 63 – Demetri Lowe went off for 35 points to lead Ringgold (4-10) to a nonsection win. Xavion Thomas added 13 and Chris Wilson had 11 for the Rams. Noah Felentzer scored 32 points, including 25 in the first half, for Southmoreland (12-4). Brady Sherbondy added 15 points.

Riverview 38, Frazier 33 – Alex Schultheis scored 13 points and Riverview (7-9, 5-4) rallied from three points down at the end of the third quarter for a Section 1-2A win. Conlan Higbee scored 12 for Frazier (3-13, 1-8).

Seneca Valley 53, North Allegheny 50 – Owen Congdon scored 16 points, Nico Santapau had 15 and Ryan Priester added 11 to lead Seneca Valley (11-6, 8-1) to a Section 1-6A win. John Jubeck scored 14 points and Carter Melzer had 13 for North Allegheny (5-10, 1-8).

South Fayette 49, Bethel Park 47 – Gavin Orosz scored 13 points and Tyson Wright and Jake Levisuer each had 12 as South Fayette (12-4, 7-1) battled to a Section 3-5A win. Michael Bruckner and Tanner Pfeuffer scored 11 points and Jack Bruckner had 10 for Bethel Park (5-10, 2-6).

Summit Academy 60, Avella 50 – Kyzir Rowan scored 19 points and Quaran Joiner added 15 to lead Summit Academy (6-5, 3-2) to a Section 1-A win. Bryce Wright and Cody Day scored 12 points apiece and Brayden Fuller had 11 for Avella (8-7, 1-3).

Thomas Jefferson 64, Trinity 60 – Nick Trklja scored 22 points, Justin Fry had 16 and Noah Kaszer added 14 to lead Thomas Jefferson (7-8, 3-4) to a Section 3-5A win. Jacob Dunkle scored 27 points and Jonah Williamson had 19 for Trinity (8-6, 3-5).

Uniontown 64, Latrobe 45 – Calvin Winfrey led with 20 points, Notorious Grooms followed with 16 and Kelan Milsom added 11 for Uniontown (14-3, 9-0) in a Section 1-5A win. John Wetzel scored 15 points and Ian DeCerb had 14 for Latrobe (15-2, 7-2). Uniontown has handed Latrobe its only two losses of the season.

Upper St. Clair 65, Canon-McMillan 19 – Dane York scored 11 points and George Gombar chipped in 10 to help Upper St. Clair (16-1, 9-0) past Canon-McMillan (3-12, 1-8) in Section 2-6A.

Waynesburg 59, Jefferson-Morgan 53 – Alex VanSickle scored 18 points, Cole Headlee had 15 and Alex Eck added 13 to lead Waynesburg (5-9) to a nonsection win. Jeremiah Robertson scored 12 points and Jase Bedilion had 11 for Jefferson-Morgan (10-5).

Woodland Hills 59, New Castle 52 – Scoop Smith led with 26 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, and Tymir Walker added 10 to push Woodland Hills (7-9, 3-6) to a Section 1-6A win. Ralphie Blundo scored 17 points and Damien Harrison had 14 for New Castle (12-3, 6-3).

Girls basketball

Albert Gallatin 50, Gateway 30 – Grayce Panos scored 17 points, Mya Glisan had 14 and Ellie Seese added 10 to lead Albert Gallatin (7-7) to a nonsection win. Rachel Szymanski scored 11 points for Gateway (0-11).

Aquinas Academy 56, Sewickley Academy 17 – Elliot Keverline scored 20 points, Tess Duer added 16 and Kay Chufo chipped in 10 to lead Aquinas Academy (9-5, 6-2) past Sewickley Academy (4-9, 3-6) in Section 1-A.

Belle Vernon 49, West Mifflin 48 – Aubrey Brown and Victoria Selembo scored 11 points apiece and Mia Roebuck added 10 to push Belle Vernon (8-8) to a nonsection win. Ar’ryah Scott scored 17 points and Neraul Parms had 13 for West Mifflin (2-11).

Burgettstown 48, Bentworth 39 – Paige Klodowski scored 27 points and Savanna Rush added 11 to lead Burgettstown (6-10) to a nonsection win. Liz Wade and Kayla O’Dell scored 11 points apiece for Bentworth (6-10).

Canon-McMillan 47, Beaver 37 – Madison Clair scored 17 points to lead Canon-McMillan (9-6) to a nonsection victory. Annsley Baker scored 21 for Beaver (11-4).

Cheswick Christian Academy 42, Harvest Baptist Academy 30 – Grace Kostick scored 15 points and Lauren Weng added 11 to lead Cheswick Christian Academy (2-2) in the Southwestern Christian Athletic Conference. Caroline Blakeslee scored 15 for Harvest Baptist.

Greenville 49, Laurel 28 – Preslie Kirila scored 23 points for Greenville in a nonsection win. Kylie Ruperto scored eight points for Laurel (6-11).

Peters Township 67, Baldwin 57 – Natalie Wetzel hit six 3-pointers and finished with 34 points and Bri Morreale added 14 points to lead Peters Township (14-2, 7-0) in Section 4-5A. Lynsey Bernotas scored 18 points and Mary Vargo had 10 for Baldwin (8-8, 3-4).

Ringgold 57, Southmoreland 32 – Alayna Macioce scored 16 points, Rihanna Fordham followed with 11 and Jada Gernot had 10 as Ringgold (7-8, 1-6) defeated Southmoreland (3-13, 1-8) in Section 3-4A.

Shady Side Academy 61, Avonworth 39 – Karis Thomas scored 25 points and Cassie Sauer added 13 to lead Shady Side Academy (15-0, 8-0) to a Section 2-3A win. Greta O’Brien scored 18 points for Avonworth (8-6, 5-3).

South Park 55, Mt. Pleasant 12 – Hayley Bennett scored 17 points and Bella Stromberg and Addison Kerr added 10 points apiece to lead South Park (9-4, 6-2) to a Section 3-4A win over Mt. Pleasant (3-12, 3-6).

Thomas Jefferson 70, Trinity 43 – Ally Wilson led with 15 points, Riley McCabe followed with 13 and Kaylee DeAngelo added 12 for Thomas Jefferson (14-2, 6-1) in a Section 4-5A win. Kimari Behrens and Sutton Williamson scored 13 points apiece for Trinity (8-6, 3-5).

Union 60, Western Beaver 21 – Kylie Fruehstorfer scored 22 points and Olivia Benedict and Miera Gunn contributed 10 each to lead Union (15-0, 9-0) to a Section 1-A win. Elizabeth Squicquero led Western Beaver (3-10, 1-7) with 13 points.

Yough 53, Frazier 22 – Hailey Bock scored 10 points to lead Yough (9-7) to a nonsection win. Allie Yauch scored eight points for Frazier (5-9).

Hockey

Armstrong 7, Norwin 3 – Hudson Bundy and Derek Crissman scored two goals apiece, Jason Rullo and Evan Heilman each had a goal and an assist and Joshua Rullo dished out three assists for Armstrong (8-6) in a Class 2A win. Zayn Zeravica had a goal and an assist for Norwin (1-13-1).

Latrobe 4, Canon-McMillan 0 – Jackson Hayburn had two goals and an assist and Reese Myers made 20 saves to lead Latrobe (13-2) to a Class 2A win over Canon-McMillan (4-10-1). Cam Mikulsky added a goal and an assist and Bryant Dumnich also scored.

Pine-Richland 10, Peters Township 1 – Josh Lanyard and Douglas Van Meter each scored twice and AJ Verszyla and Roger Williams had a goal and two assists apiece to lead Pine-Richland (4-8-2) to a Class 3A win. Colten Andrighetti, Carson Verszyla and Isaac Baker each had a goal and an assist. Angelo Maietta scored for Peters Township (4-9-2).

Shaler 6, McDowell 2 – Matthew Stelitano scored a hat trick and added an assist, Darius Malecki collected a goal and two assists and Jacob Skerlong had a goal and an assist in a Class A win for Shaler (12-3-1). Dylan Graham had a goal and an assist for McDowell (5-10).
