High school roundup for Jan. 25, 2024: Clairton’s Iyanna Wade sets WPIAL single-game scoring record

Iyanna Wade set a WPIAL girls basketball single-game scoring record with 65 points, leading Clairton (14-2, 6-2) to a 81-32 victory over Steel Valley (0-17, 0-9) in Section 3-2A Thursday night.

Wade broke the record of 62 set by Maude Searcy of Wilkinsburg in a win over Clairton in 1990. The boys record is 71 set by Larry Hardesty of Mohawk in 1959.

Armstrong 61, New Castle 35 – Emma Paul scored 17 points and Kyla Fitzgerald and Sarai Weaver added 10 points apiece for Armstrong (14-4, 7-2) in a Section 2-5A win. Raegan Hudson and Rihanna Boice scored nine points apiece for New Castle (2-16, 0-9).

Avonworth 50, South Allegheny 13 – Becca Goetz had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds and Greta O’Brien added 11 points for Avonworth (14-1, 6-0) in a Section 2-3A win over South Allegheny (4-12, 1-5).

Belle Vernon 42, Uniontown 30 – Nina Francia scored a career-high 19 points and Saylor Lee added 15 for Belle Vernon (9-9, 5-4) in a Section 3-4A win. Geelece Ingram finished with 13 to lead Uniontown (5-12, 2-7).

Bethel Park 48, Chartiers Valley 46 – Julia Benlock scored 18 points and Ella Harmon added 10 to push Bethel Park (5-12, 2-7) to a Section 2-6A win. Emma Reynolds led Chartiers Valley (13-3, 6-2) with 15 points.

Blackhawk 79, Central Valley 41 – Alena Fusetti led with 22 points, Aubree Hupp followed with 20 and Piper Romigh added 11 for Blackhawk (14-2, 6-0) in a Section 2-4A win. Nyah Hayes scored 12 points and Dominique Douglas had 11 for Central Valley (5-10, 2-4).

Brownsville 40, Yough 37 – Skyler Gates scored 15 points and Zhariah Reed added 13 for Brownsville (9-7, 2-3) in Section 4-3A. Autumn Matthews scored 21 and Hailey Bock had 16 for Yough (8-8, 1-4).

Burgettstown 54, Northgate 26 – Kaitlyn Nease scored 14 points and Savanna Rush added 12 for Burgettstown (10-8, 6-0) in a Section 2-2A win over Northgate (5-10, 2-4).

Burrell 38, Mt. Pleasant 36 (2 OT) – Jules Fisher scored 12 points and Burrell (13-3, 5-1) slipped past Mt. Pleasant (10-6, 3-3) in double overtime to earn a Section 3-3A win. Burrell outscored Mt. Pleasant 6-4 in the second OT. Grace Arrigo had 13 for the Vikings.

Cheswick Christian Academy 39, Western Pa. School for the Deaf 28 – Allie Szramowski and Mei Clay scored nine points each to lead Cheswick Christian. Staria Baskin and Jada Pippins each scored 11 for the Western Pa. School for the Deaf.

Elizabeth Forward 80, Southmoreland 7 – Alyssa Terza had 18 points and Addyson Nigut hit four 3-pointers and scored 15 as Elizabeth Forward (16-2, 9-0) rolled past Southmoreland (2-15, 1-7) in Section 3-4A. Mia Sostaric and Kaelynn Settles added 12 points apiece for the Warriors.

Ellwood City 67, Neshannock 60 – Delaney Sturgeon led with 16 points, Elsie Sturgeon followed with 14, Claire Noble had 13 and Caitlin Kreitzer and Kayla Jones added 12 apiece to push Ellwood City (12-6, 4-2) to a Section 1-3A win. Payton Newman scored 23 points and Jaidon Nogay had 17 for Neshannock (11-5, 5-1).

Fort Cherry 60, Carlynton 16 – Brooke Cornali led Fort Cherry (13-4, 5-1) with 18 points, Bella Bianchini had 12 and Olivia Kemp and Raney Staub added 10 apiece in a Section 2-2A win over Carlynton (5-11, 1-5).

Freedom 49, Sewickley Academy 30 – Shaye Bailey scored 26 points and Olivia Henderson added 10 to help Freedom (9-8, 7-2) secure a Section 1-2A win. Libby Eannarino had 19 for Sewickley Academy (5-10, 2-6).

Greensburg Central Catholic 82, Springdale 21 – Erica Gribble had 19 points, Mya Morgan and Jayla Peterson each added 13, and Greensburg Central Catholic (13-4, 9-0) cruised to a Section 3-2A win. Ashlyn Ferderbar had 10 for Springdale (6-12, 2-6).

Greensburg Salem 63, Valley 19 – Led by 13 points from Ashlan Price, 11 from Blessing Gantt and 10 from Kait Mankins, Greensburg Salem (14-4, 6-2) picked up a Section 1-4A win. Ryleigh Kasten and Ameria Simmons each scored six for Valley (0-17, 0-9).

Hampton 40, Highlands 32 – Meghan Murray had a game-high 18 points and Emma Rick scored 16 for Hampton (11-6) in a nonsection win. Tyarah Woody scored 11 for Highlands (11-6).

Hopewell 34, Beaver 31 – Caylee Sundy finished with 15 points and Hopewell (9-7, 4-2) edged Beaver (6-10, 3-3) in Section 2-4A. Annsley Baker had 13 for the Bobcats.

Jefferson-Morgan 48, Mapletown 31 – Kayla Larkin scored 26 points and Ali Ostrich added 10 to lead Jefferson-Morgan (3-14, 1-5) to a Section 2-A win. Isabelle Garner led Mapletown (5-10, 2-4) with 19 points.

Knoch 52, Freeport 27 – Karlee Buterbaugh scored 13 points, Naturelle Ewing had 11 and Neah Ewing added 10 for Knoch (9-7, 4-4) in a Section 1-4A win. Lilly Holloway and Giacinta Pugliese scored six points apiece for Freeport (7-11, 3-6).

Ligonier Valley 48, Deer Lakes 31 – Marlee Miller scored 13 points, Sydnee Foust had 11 and Lindsey Gaskey added 10 to push Ligonier Valley (5-11, 2-4) past Deer Lakes (4-12, 0-6) in a Section 3-3A win.

Mars 50, Fox Chapel 35 – Vita Vargo scored 13 and Mya Moore added 12 for Mars (9-8, 5-3) in a Section 2-5A win over Fox Chapel (5-13, 3-6).

Mohawk 44, Laurel 33 – Erynne Capalbo scored 27 points to push Mohawk (10-7, 3-3) to a Section 1-3A win. Shyan Tindall and Morgan Barker scored nine points apiece for Laurel (4-13, 1-5).

Monessen 58, Geibel 34 – Na’Jaziah Carter scored 13 points to lead four players in double figures for Monessen (11-3, 5-0) in a Section 2-A win. Hailey Johnson added 12, Madison Johnson 11 and Sidney Campbell 10. Emma Larkin scored 17 and Ava Henderson added 11 for Geibel (11-5, 4-2).

Montour 59, Trinity 56 (OT) – Jordan Wolfe had 27 points and Montour (7-8, 2-4) outlasted Trinity (11-5, 4-2) to secure a Section 4-5A win. Ruby Morgan scored 22 for the Hillers, who played their fifth consecutive overtime game. They’re 1-4 in those games.

Mt. Lebanon 57, Baldwin 46 (OT) – Payton Collins had a game-high 19 points and Mt. Lebanon (10-8, 6-3) used a 16-5 advantage in overtime to take a Section 2-6A win. Quinn Murdoch added 13 points for the Blue Devils. Kathleen Lucarelli scored 12 for Baldwin (8-10, 1-8).

Oakland Catholic 64, Albert Gallatin 15 – London Creach scored 15 points and Kaylee DeAngelo and Josephine Fontana added nine points apiece for Oakland Catholic (18-0, 9-0) in a Section 3-5A win. Mya Glisan scored 10 points for Albert Gallatin (4-13, 1-8).

OLSH 49, Keystone Oaks 40 – Claudia Ierullo scored 25 points to push OLSH (12-5, 3-3) to a Section 2-3A win. Bailey Rieg led Keystone Oaks (12-4, 3-3) with 19 points.

Penn-Trafford 65, Thomas Jefferson 39 – Lauren Marton scored 20 points, Elle Visco had 14 and Olivia Pepple added 12 for Penn-Trafford (12-5, 6-3) in a Section 3-5A win. Laekyn Flynn led Thomas Jefferson (7-10, 4-4) with 20 points.

Pine-Richland 52, Hempfield 36 – Madison Zavasky led Pine-Richland (5-10, 3-3) with 30 points and Maren Iski added 14 in a Section 1-6A win. Sarah Podkul scored 16 points for Hempfield (7-10, 0-6).

Plum 60, Woodland Hills 51 – Megan Marston hit for 28 points and Riley Stephans scored 13 for Plum (12-5, 8-1) in a Section 1-5A win. Carmen Vazquez scored 17 and Jhalynn Wilson had 16 for Woodland Hills (6-9, 4-4).

Riverview 47, Leechburg 26 – Lily Bauer scored 20 points and Katerina Tsambis added nine to lead Riverview (12-5, 4-1) to a Section 1-3A win. Adalyn Zanotto scored seven points for Leechburg (6-7, 2-3).

Seneca Valley 66, Butler 44 – Natalie Hambly had 24 points to help Seneca Valley (12-5, 4-2) dispatch Butler (3-13, 1-5) in Section 1-6A. Mikalya Canty added 13 points for the Raiders.

Seton LaSalle 83, East Allegheny 18 – Mallory Daly scored 36 points and Addie Lonergan added 22, hitting six 3-pointers, for Seton LaSalle (11-4, 5-1) in a Section 2-3A win. Ivy Barnett scored 10 for East Allegheny (0-17, 0-6).

Shady Side Academy 75, Apollo-Ridge 30 – Maggie Spell led Shady Side Academy (13-2, 6-0) with 25 points and Karis Thomas added 22 in a Section 3-3A win. Sophia Yard led Apollo-Ridge (6-11, 2-4) with 11 points.

South Fayette 47, Moon 43 (OT) – Erica Hall scored 22 points to lead South Fayette (10-6, 4-2) to an overtime victory in Section 4-5A. Jaedin Griggs scored 23 and Leiana Rucker added 10 for Moon (10-6, 2-4).

South Park 48, McGuffey 32 – Addy Kerr scored 12 points to lead South Park (11-6, 5-1) in Section 4-3A. Taylor Schumacher scored 23 for McGuffey (13-4, 3-3).

St. Joseph 75, Allderdice 65 – Julie Spinelli scored 24 points and Emma Swierczewski added 23 to power St. Joseph (15-2) to a nonsection win. Gia Richter had 13 and Maggie Bernat contributed 12 for the Spartans. Bailey White and Peyton Lynch scored 25 apiece for Allderdice (8-8).

Union 38, Aquinas Academy 27 – Kylie Fruehstorfer scored 16 points and Kelly Cleaver followed with 11 to push Union (13-5, 4-0) to a Section 1-A win. Ellie Junker led Aquinas Academy (14-3, 2-2) with 11 points and Emily Fisher had 10.

Washington 59, Frazier 40 – Kaprice Johnson scored 15 points and Olivia Woods added 13 to lead Washington (9-8, 7-1) to a Section 4-2A win. Allie Yauch led Frazier (5-13, 2-7) with 16 points and Chloe Harger had 14.

Waynesburg 62, Charleroi 41 – Josie Horn led three Raiders in double figures with 19 points in a Section 4-3A victory. Avery Davis added 12 points for Waynesburg (16-1, 6-0) and Addison Blair scored 10. Riley Jones paced Charleroi (7-9, 0-6) with 16.

Boys basketball

Cheswick Christian Academy 71, Western Pa. School for the Deaf 29 – Brady Rochkind scored a career-high 33 points, hitting nine 3-pointers, to lead Cheswick Christian (11-2). Sean Louis added 20 points and Grant Rochkind had 10 for the Chargers. Spencer Ahern led the Western Pa. School for the Deaf with 14 points.

Moon 58, South Fayette 49 – Elijah Guillory scored 29 points and Aiden Reesman added 10 as Moon (13-3, 6-0) won a battle of the top two teams in Section 4-5A. Gavin Orosz led South Fayette (10-7, 4-2) with 28 points.

Propel Andrew Street 60, Calvary Christian 15 – Darryl McCullough scored 16 points, Maurice Lowry added 12 and Trayvon Walker had 10 to lead Propel Andrew Street past Calvary Christian.

Seton LaSalle 66, Steel Valley 32 – Patrick Weldon hit five 3-pointers and scored 19 points to lead Seton LaSalle (13-3, 8-0) to a Section 2-3A win. Ian March added 12 and Hayden Merchant had 11 for the Rebels. Nahjir Norris scored 12 and Nate Yuhas had 11 for Steel Valley (0-15, 0-7).

South Allegheny 59, Avonworth 55 – Drew Cook poured in 25 points, Jeston Beatty scored 12 and Michael Michalski added 10 to help South Allegheny (11-6, 3-3) hand Avonworth (11-5, 5-1) its first Section 4-4A loss of the season. Rowan Carmichael scored 21 for the Antelopes.

Hockey

Beaver 2, Freeport 0 – Gabe Berardelli made 29 saves and Tanner Nicol and Gabe Forney scored for Beaver (8-7-2) in a Class A win. Luke Laboda made 15 saves for Freeport (4-9-4).

Blackhawk 7, Hampton 3 – Matias Huber had a hat trick and added an assist and Owen Keister, Beck Harry and Owen Gratowski each had a goal and an assist to lead Blackhawk (10-2-1) to a Class A win. Daniel Leyes and Mason Vinciguerra each had a goal and an assist for Hampton (4-12).

Central Valley 7, Deer Lakes 2 – Aiden Pournaras had four goals and an assist and Gavin Crivelli added two goals and an assist for Central Valley (8-7) in a Varsity D2 win. Giovanni Porco and Mason Cervone scored for Deer Lakes (8-6).

Chartiers Valley 3, Avonworth 2 (OT) – Dylan Shamonsky scored the overtime winner, Luke Hinds had a goal and an assist and Romeo Isoldi also scored for Chartiers Valley (15-0) in a Class A win. Austin Gatti and Linus Jesionowski scored for Avonworth (13-3-1).

Elizabeth Forward 14, Trinity 6 – Josh Hill scored five goals to lead Elizabeth Forward (7-5) to a D2 win. Bobby Boord Jr. and Joey Wach added two goals each for the Warriors. Robert Daddea had a hat trick for Trinity (1-13).

Mars 5, Shaler 4 (OT) – Ethan Lipchin scored the overtime winner, Xavier Bossola had a goal and an assist and Adam Goul made 37 saves to lead Mars (12-4) to a Class A win. Jack Weaver, Ben Olshenske and Grant Weaver also scored for Mars. Dylan Marsden, Jacob Skerlong, Thomas Sommer and Brendan Fitzgerald scored for Shaler (11-3-2).

North Allegheny 4, Baldwin 1 – Ed Scherer, Evan Perrotte, Ryan Jackman and Gianni Lochiatto scored and Camden Junker made 23 saves to lead North Allegheny (9-3-2) to a Class 3A win. Tanner Plinta scored for Baldwin (1-12-2).

North Catholic 4, Indiana 0 – Quinn Lee scored twice, Colin Gnarra had a goal and an assist, Ryan Berry dished out three assists and Wyatt Cleveland made 16 saves to lead North Catholic (12-4-1) past Indiana (12-2-2) in Class A.

Pine-Richland 4, Upper St. Clair 0 – Josh Lanyard had two goals and an assist, Cullen Campbell added a goal and an assist, Aiden Tarasovich also scored and Brett Sudac made 24 saves for Pine-Richland (10-4-1) in a Class 3A win over Upper St. Clair (7-4-3).

Seneca Valley 7, Mt. Lebanon 6 – Jacob Komaniak scored two goals and Andrew Malichky, Marshall Hewitt, Tyler Garvin, Garrett Bereksazi and Ethan Lindberg had a goal apiece to push Seneca Valley (13-3) to a Class 3A win. Connor Ribstein scored two goals for Mt. Lebanon (9-5-1).

South Fayette 3, Latrobe 0 – Graydon Sarnowski made 31 saves to record the shutout and Tyler Brandebura had a goal and an assist to lead South Fayette (12-1-2) to a Class 2A win over Latrobe (11-5). Bennett Malky and Eli Petter also scored.

Thomas Jefferson 11, North Hills 4 – Jake Stock had two goals and three assists, Nathan Weiss and Scott Allan each added two goals and two assists, and Jake Simon also scored twice for Thomas Jefferson (13-2) in a Class 2A win. Dillon Cobaugh had three goals and an assist and Andrew Nazak added a goal and three assists for North Hills (0-14).
