High school roundup for March 27, 2019: South Allegheny edges South Park

Two of the WPIAL’s top softball teams kicked off the Section 3-3A slate with a nail-biter Wednesday afternoon.

Kennedy Pikula had three hits and two RBIs, and Olivia Stetz doubled twice to help South Allegheny earn a 5-4 victory over No. 2-ranked South Park.

Cortney Woytovich earned the win for South Allegheny (7-0, 1-0).

Jess Dean was 4 for 4 with a home run for the Eagles (3-1, 0-1).

Bethel Park 11, Peters Township 1 (5 inn.) — Gianna Sciullo had three hits, including a three-run home run, and Regan Milliken went 3 for 4 with an RBI as Bethel Park (1-0, 1-0) won in Section 1-6A.

Canon-McMillan 8, Upper St. Clair 3 — Lindsay Schmidt, Grace Higgins, Olivia Ulam and Abby Allen all homered as No. 5 Canon-McMillan (2-0, 1-0) won in Section 1-6A.

Montour 9, South Fayette 4 — Angelina LaMarca was 3 for 4 with five RBIs as Montour (1-2, 1-0) won a Section 3-5A game.

West Allegheny 15, Western Beaver 0 (4 inn.) — Maci Priddy had a home run and four RBIs, and Britney Wilson added four RBIs as No. 1 West Allegheny (2-0, 2-0) won in Section 3-5A. The Indians also won the second game of the doubleheader, 11-0. Wilson had a home run and four RBIs in that game. Megan Pollinger earned both victories in the circle.

Freedom 11, South Side Beaver 9 — Shyann Komara was 4 for 4 with two RBIs to help Freedom (2-0) earn a nonsection victory.

Laurel 7, New Castle 0 — Olivia Lombaro was 4 for 4 with a home run, and Kayla Ruperto had two doubles and two RBIs as Laurel (2-0) won a nonsection game.

North Catholic 13, Central Valley 5 — Adrian Nardone had two home runs and four RBIs to lead North Catholic (1-0) to a nonsection win.

Penn-Trafford 3, Connellsville 1 — Morgan Nedley was 3 for 3 with an RBI, and Emma Little knocked in three runs to lead No. 4 Penn-Trafford to a Section 1-5A win.

Morgan Hilty earned the win after scattering four hits over 4-plus innings for the Warriors (1-0, 1-0).

Norwin 17, Fox Chapel 4 (6 inn.) — Bailee Bertani hit two home runs and had three RBIs, and Hailee Culbertson was 4 for 5 with two doubles and three RBIs as Norwin (1-1, 1-1) won in Section 2-6A. Victoria Shimko also hit a two-run homer for the Knights.

Franklin Regional 11, Armstrong 4 — Kamaria Kelly homered and had three RBIs, Abby Kane was 3 for 3 and Kylee O’Neil went 3 for 4 as Franklin Regional (2-2, 1-0) earned a Section 1-5A win.

Belle Vernon 5, Ringgold 3 (8 inn.) — Sophia Godzack hit a two-run homer, and Jordan French added a solo homer in the eighth inning to lead Belle Vernon (1-2, 1-0) to a Section 2-4A win. Godzack also threw an eight-hitter with eight strikeouts. Ashley Joll had three hits and an RBI for the Leopards.

Charleroi 15, Monessen 0 (3 inn.) — Kylie Quigley struck out nine and didn’t allow a hit as Charleroi (1-0) won a nonsection game over Monessen (0-1).

Gateway 11, Greensburg Salem 4 — Sydney Hunter and Maura Ryan had two RBIs each, and Deanna Gratton knocked in three runs as Gateway (1-1) won a nonsection game. Mattie White was 3 for 4, and Nikki Mellinger drove in two runs for Greensburg Salem (0-0).

Yough 14, Derry 0 (5 inn.) — Kierra Waywood tossed a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts to lead Class 4A No. 2 Yough (2-1) to a nonsection victory. Hannah Christner was 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs. Sammie McGhee and Corrin Parquette also knocked in two runs each.

Ligonier Valley 15, Purchase Line 0 (3 inn.) — Jane Garver threw a one-hitter with eight strikeouts and had three hits and three RBIs to lead Ligonier Valley (2-0, 2-0) to a District 6 Heritage Conference win. Kaylee Colt also had three hits and three RBIs, and Taylor Bojtos knocked in three runs.

Springdale 10, East Allegheny 0 (5 inn.) — Freshman pitcher Alexis Hrivnak had 12 strikeouts and allowed two hits over five innings in a nonsection victory at East Allegheny (0-1). Hrivnak also doubled for the Dynamos (1-0). Tylar Rafail doubled and drove in three runs, and Brianna Thompson tripled for Springdale.

Apollo-Ridge 18, Sto-Rox 0 (3 inn.) — Mollie Charlton went 3 for 3 with a triple and four RBIs and earned the win in the circle as Apollo-Ridge (1-0, 1-0) cruised to a Section 2-2A win at Sto-Rox (0-1, 0-1). Bailey Zidek homered and drove in three runs for Apollo-Ridge, which scored 12 runs in the first inning. Emma Rametta, Sidney Shaeffer, and Morgan Shupe collected two hits apiece.

Serra Catholic 15, Riverview 9 — The Raiders led by a run after five innings, but Nina Grandey hit a grand slam that highlighted an 11-run sixth, propelling Serra Catholic (1-0, 1-0) to a Section 2-2A win. Alyssa Cappa homered for Riverview (0-1, 0-1). Cappa, Annie Betler and Katelyn Davis had two hits apiece.

Indiana 16, Valley 5 — Haleigh Zimmerman hit two solo home runs as Indiana won in nonsection play. Sara Zimmerman hit a solo home run, doubled and tripled and Cleo McMahan hit a three-run home run for Indiana (1-0). Rylee Gatto hit a two-run homer and Mackenzie Booker hit a three-run homer for Valley (0-1).

Baseball

Armstrong 13, Indiana 3 (5 inn.) — Zack Streightif was 3 for 3 with three RBIs, and Noah Cyphert, Eddie Morris and Ryan Bowser each knocked in two runs as Armstrong (2-1) won a nonsection game.

Central Catholic 3, Canon-McMillan 1 (8 inn.) — Zach Palmer knocked in two runs in the top of the eighth inning to give Central Catholic (1-0) a nonsection win over No. 1 Canon-McMillan (2-1). Brett Palmer struck out six and threw a six-hitter to earn the victory.

Casey Burke plated the lone run for the Big Macs.

Moon 8, Chartiers Valley 1 — Nic Mari had two hits and two RBIs to help Moon (1-0) pick up a nonsection win. Griffin Beattie went 2 for 2 with a double and RBI for the Colts (0-2).

Mt. Lebanon 5, Butler 3 — Justin Duda had two RBIs, and Dante Borris knocked in a run as Mt. Lebanon (2-2) won a nonsection game.

OLSH 9, Eden Christian Academy 0 — Mitchell Maha had two RBIs as OLSH (2-1) picked up a nonsection win. Nathan Hart struck out five in four innings to earn the win.

Quaker Valley 9, Chartiers-Houston 2 — Isaac Guss had three RBIs, and Christian Johnson added two as Quaker Valley (1-0) won a nonsection game.

South Side Beaver 4, Avonworth 3 — Jake McDougal drove in Jake Sargent with winning hit in bottom of seventh to give South Side (1-0) a nonsection victory. Ashton Statler and Sargent each had three hits.

Trinity 9, Waynesburg 4 — Forrest Havanis had four RBIs, and Jax Banco added three as Trinity (3-3) won a nonsection contest.

West Allegheny 7, Thomas Jefferson 3 — Shea Downing and Mason Timko each plated two runs, and Luke Lambert went 3 for 4 as West Allegheny (1-0) won a nonsection game.

Brownsville 10, Mt. Pleasant 7Mt. Pleasant (0-1) scored three runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings, but it wasn’t enough in a nonsection loss.

Asher O’Connor and Pete Billey had doubles for Mt. Pleasant.

Greensburg Central Catholic 14, South Allegheny 0 (4 inn.) — Alex Miller went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and Tom Salley and Ben LaCarte drove in a run each as Class A No. 5 Greensburg Central Catholic (1-1) cruised to a nonsection win.

Jeannette 14, Clairton 0 (5 inn.) — Alex Vickers threw a two-hitter with six strikeouts as Jeannette (1-0) won a nonsection game. Drake Petrillo had three hits and three RBIs, and Seth Howard and Derrick Miller had two hits and two RBIs each for the Jayhawks.

Latrobe 14, Kiski School 0 (5 inn.) — Four pitchers combined for a no-hitter as Latrobe (3-0) rolled to a nonsection win. Justin Stott struck out three in one inning and earned the win. Donny Shimko, Ethan Grandgeorge and Cam Dominick also contributed on the mound.

Isaac Echard, Matt Henderson and Eric Soccio had two hits each, and Ben Rafferty and Tucker Knupp had two RBIs apiece.

Norwin 5, Ringgold 4 — Logan Liebdzinski and Alex Gabauer had two hits each, and Kyle Chismar and Owen Sabol doubled as Norwin (2-0) won a nonsection game. The Knights scored four runs in the fourth inning to take control.

Jacob Bazala earned the victory on the mound, and Garrett Senchur had the save.

Southmoreland 15, Springdale 4 (6 inn.) — Ben Zimmerman had four hits and four RBIs, and Austin McBeth added three hits and four RBIs to guide Southmoreland (1-0) to a nonsection victory. Mason Basinger allowed 10 hits and struck out two in the win.

Brandon John was 3 for 3 with an RBI, and Isaac Kern and Josh Jones had two hits each for the Dynamos (0-1).

Freeport 5, Highlands 0 Freeport went to Jarrett on the mound, and the Yellowjackets’ ace delivered.

Jarrett Heilman struck out 13 batters and allowed just five hits over 6 2/3 shutout innings, leading Freeport to a nonsection win.

Matt Mitchell had two hits, including a triple, and drove in a pair of runs for the Yellowjackets (2-0). Austin Kepes added two hits and an RBI.

Jaden Yarris singled twice for Highlands (1-1).

Burrell 7, Leechburg 0 — Jack Henderson, Marshall McKallip and Zach Miller had two hits apiece for Burrell (2-0) in a nonsection win over Leechburg (0-1). Henderson and Eli Ferres had a double apiece. Seth Fischbach singled and had two RBIs.

Riverview 13, Summit Academy 2 (6 inn.) — Ben Blacksmith had two hits and drove in three runs for Riverview (1-0) in a nonsection win at Summit Academy (0-1). The Raiders struck for six runs in the second inning to break the game open.
