High school roundup for May 1: Baldwin softball edges Canon-McMillan

Taylor Dadig homered and had three RBIs to help No. 3 Baldwin earn a 4-3 win over Canon-McMillan in a Section 1-6A softball game Tuesday.

Cassie Carlson was 2 for 4 with a double for Baldwin (9-2, 9-1).

Lindsay Schmidt and Olivia Ulam homered for Canon-McMillan (9-3, 8-3).

Hempfield 7, Norwin 1 — Megan Monzo tripled twice and drove in a pair of runs for Class 6A No. 1 Hempfield (12-1, 8-0) in a Section 2 victory over Norwin (6-4, 5-3). Emma Hoffner tripled, Laura Fox doubled twice and Kelsey Tobin had a double. Alexandra Brentzel and Jocelyn Marko had a double apiece for the Knights.

Latrobe 6, Fox Chapel 0 — Kiley Myers and Jordan Tallman combined to pitch no-hitter for Class 6A No. 2 Latrobe (8-1, 7-1) in a Section 2 win over Fox Chapel (4-8). Myers struck out 15 over five innings and Tallman had five strikeouts in two innings. Mia Schwerzer tripled and drove in two runs for the Wildcats.

North Allegheny 6, Seneca Valley 1 — Chloe Szczepaniak was 3 for 4 with two RBIs as No. 4 North Allegheny (11-6, 8-1) won in Section 3-6A.

Kiski Area 6, Greensburg Salem 3 — Sarah Clever had two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs to help Kiski Area (7-6, 6-6) defeat Greensburg Salem (7-7, 6-5) in a Section 1-5A game. Erin Weaver and Alayna Mintz doubled for the Cavaliers. Liz O'Neal and Tiffany Brzuda had a double apiece for the Golden Lions.

Gateway 8, Plum 5 Plum scored five runs in the top of the seventh, but its rally fell short in a Section 1-5A loss to Gateway (6-6, 6-6). Alyssa Schofield and Sidney Young had three hits apiece. Young, MacKenzie Lake and Abbey Froehlich doubled for the Mustangs (7-7, 6-6). Emma Kennedy homered for the Gators, who scored seven in the second inning.

Mt. Pleasant 15, Derry 0 (3 inn.) — Meadow Uncapher struck out eight batters on her way to pitching a no-hitter as Class 4A No. 1 Mt. Pleasant picked up the Section 1 win over rival Derry (3-7, 2-6). Haylie Brunson doubled, tripled and homered for the Vikings (12-0, 9-0).

Uniontown 2, Highlands 0 Uniontown (3-10, 2-7) held Highlands to three hits in a Section 1-4A game. Lindsey Marschot doubled for Uniontown, while Bailey Beacom doubled for Highlands (1-8, 1-7).

South Allegheny 13, Valley 0 (6 inn.) — Kalsey Denk drove in six runs, including a grand slam, as South Allegheny (10-5, 5-4) claimed a Section 1-3A win. Rylee Gatto doubled for Valley (1-6, 1-5).

Belle Vernon 8, South Fayette 0 — Bailey Parshall threw a three-hitter with 16 strikeouts as No. 3 Belle Vernon (11-2, 7-2) won in Section 2-4A. Sophia Godzack homered and had three RBIs.

Deer Lakes 22, East Allegheny 1 (3 inn.) — Danielle Huffman homered, doubled twice and had seven RBIs to lead Deer Lakes (4-5, 3-5) to a Section 1-3A win at East Allegheny (0-8, 0-8). Deer Lakes batted around twice in the second and scored 15 runs. Makayla Blair doubled twice, tripled and drove in four runs.

Steel Valley 16, Ellwood City 9 — Morgan Farrah doubled, homered twice and knocked in eight RBIs to lead Class 3A No. 5 Steel Valley past Section 2 foe Ellwood City (5-5, 5-4). Kayla Hartnett doubled and Jaylin Brown picked up the win for Steel Valley (10-5, 8-1).

South Park 11, Brownsville 1 (6 inn.) — Kaitlyn Pavlick was 3 for 4 with a double, triple and RBI, and Grace Albitz was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs to help No. 1 South Park (10-1, 9-0) win in Section 3-3A. Jess Dean threw a two-hitter with five strikeouts.

Southmoreland 9, McGuffey 3 — Jess Matheny, Emily Eutsey and Charity Henderson tallied three hits apiece for Southmoreland (6-3, 6-2) in a Section 3-3A win at McGuffey (4-5, 4-5). Matheny drove in three runs and was the winning pitcher.

Apollo-Ridge 12, Northgate 2 (5 inn.) — Teresa Desimone and Sierra Barr recorded two hits apiece to help Apollo-Ridge (5-3, 5-2) cruise to a Section 2-2A win at Northgate (3-4, 3-3). Mollie Charlton doubled for the Vikings and was the winning pitcher.

Leechburg 14, Geibel 0 Leechburg clinched its 32nd consecutive postseason berth in a Section 3-A contest. The Blue Devils (10-3, 9-1), who saw their 20-game section winning streak end Monday, bounced back with their seventh win by at least 10 runs.

Ligonier Valley 10, Purchase Line 0 (5 inn.) — The Rams put up five runs in the bottom of the fourth in a Heritage Conference win over rival Purchase Line (1-5, 1-5). Lexie Petrof picked up the win, and also doubled and knocked in two runs. Jane Garver doubled and added two RBIs for Ligonier Valley (10-2, 9-0).

Baseball

Central Catholic 3, Butler 2 — Brandon Boyce and Vinne Rauso had RBI triples to help Class 6A No. 1 Central Catholic (11-4, 7-2) top No. 4 Butler (8-5, 5-4) in a Section 1 game. Boyce was the winning pitcher and Marshall McGraw earned a save. Max Cebulak doubled for the Vikings. Jacob Keene had a double for the Golden Tornado.

Deer Lakes 4, Indiana 3 (10 inn.) — Alex Matter's ground ball eluded Indiana's shortstop for an error, scoring the winning run as Deer Lakes beat the Little Indians (2-8, 2-8) in a walk-off in Section 1-4A. Matter pitched five scoreless innings of relief to earn the win and had a pair of hits and RBIs. Jake Kelly had three hits for the Lancers (8-6, 5-5).

Greensburg Salem 10, Highlands 0 (5 inn.) — Reid Admundson singled, doubled and knocked in three runs as Greensburg Salem rolled past Section 1-4A rival Highlands (3-10, 3-8). Starting pitcher Aaren Putt stuck out five batters and gave up three hits to pick up the win for Greensburg Salem (8-5, 7-4). Jack Oberdorf doubled and added two RBIs, and Matt Wicker went 4 for 4 with one RBI.

Belle Vernon 9, Elizabeth Forward 6 — Trevor Schrock had two doubles to help Belle Vernon (8-4, 7-4) win in Section 3-4A.

Ringgold 6, McGuffey 5 — The Rams put up two runs in the top of the seventh as Class 4A No. 4 Ringgold pulled out the win over McGuffey in a Section 3 matchup. Bo Haines homered, singled and knocked in three runs and picked up the win for Ringgold (11-2, 10-2). Jake Orr singled twice, doubled and tallied two RBIs for McGuffey (3-12, 1-10).

Riverview 13, Sto-Rox 3 (6 inn.) — Mark McClelland and Ben Blacksmith recorded three hits apiece for Riverview (4-7, 3-7) in a Section 3-2A win over Sto-Rox (0-8, 0-8). McClelland doubled and tripled, and Blacksmith was the winning pitcher. Cody Demko and William Franciscus doubled for the Raiders.

Vincentian 20, St. Joseph 2 (3 inn.) — The No. 1 Royals (11-2, 8-1) scored 12 runs in the top of the first inning of a Section 1-A win. Kyler Fedko went 4 for 4 with two homers, a triple and five RBIs. Eli Swierczewski drove in a run for St. Joseph (2-9, 1-7).

Greensburg Central Catholic 14, West Greene 0 (5 inn.) — Tom Voelker homered and drove in four runs to help Class A No. 2 Greensburg Central Catholic (9-4, 8-1) top West Greene (5-5, 5-5) in Section 2 play.

Kiski Area 13, Penn Hills 2 (5 inn.) — Cameron Guercio went 4 for 4 with four RBIs to lead Kiski Area (3-8) to a nonsection victory over Penn Hills (3-9). Ryan Rametta finished with three hits, including a double, and two RBIs.

Somerset 5, Ligonier Valley 4 — Somerset broke open a tie game with a run in the bottom of the seventh as Ligonier Valley fell to Somerset in a nonconference matchup. Sully Schueltz tripled, and pitcher John Beard knocked in two runs and took the loss for Ligonier Valley (8-4, 5-3).
