High school roundup for May 14, 2019: Albert Gallatin blanks South Fayette

Maddy Hershberger threw a four-hit shutout and also had an RBI double to lead No. 9-seeded Albert Gallatin to a 2-0 victory over South Fayette (11-8) in the first round of the WPIAL Class 5A softball playoffs -Tuesday at Trinity.

Hershberger struck out eight and walked two in the complete-game victory. Maria Sutton was 2 for 3 with a double for the Colonials (11-7), who will play No. 1 Penn-Trafford (17-1) in the quarterfinals Monday at a time and site to be determined.

Jefferson-Morgan 15, Rochester 1 (5 inn.) — No. 5 Jefferson-Morgan (10-6) scored nine runs in the third inning en route to a victory in the WPIAL Class A first round at Trinity.

The Rockets will play No. 4 Sewickley Academy (9-3) in the quarterfinals Monday.

Jeannette 7, Mapletown 3 — No. 10 Jeannette (9-5) scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie and win a WPIAL Class A first-round win at Peters Township.

Faith Johnston hit a two-run double in the seventh inning and struck out 12 batters for the Jayhawks, who will play No. 2 Leechburg (15-1) in the quarterfinals Monday. Taylor-Lynn Finken also had two RBIs.

Boys lacrosse

Franklin Regional 9, South Fayette 7 — Kevin Cakanac scored three times, and Riley Bair added two gaols as No. 8 Franklin Regional (7-7) won a WPIAL Class AA first-round game at home. Mitch DeBiase, Lex Hurey, Sam Serago and Greg Baird also scored. Ethan Johnston earned the win in goal. The Panthers will play No. 1 Mars in the quarterfinals at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Boys tennis

Fox Chapel 5, State College 0 — The WPIAL champion Fox Chapel boys tennis team had no trouble with District 6 champion State College in a PIAA Class AAA first-round match Tuesday at the Oxford Athletic Club.

The Foxes took all five matches in straight sets.

Robby Shymanski, Jared Nord and Milo Baron captured singles victories, while the teams of Ronit Patel and Alex Mullen and Shan Hassan and Clay Quackensbush also were winners.

With the win, the Foxes (17-0) advance to the quarterfinals and will face District 1 bronze medalist Conestoga at 5 p.m. Friday at Hershey Racquet Club.

WPIAL runner-up Shady Side Academy also advanced after a 5-0 win over Perry.

In Class AA, South Park defeated St. Marys, 5-0; Indiana beat Mercyhurst Prep, 3-2; and Quaker Valley beat Juniata, 5-0.
