High school roundup for Oct. 12, 2023: Seneca Valley beats North Allegheny, claims section title in clash of unbeatens

Tyler Prex broke a scoreless tie in the first minute of the second half to lead Seneca Valley to a 2-0 victory over North Allegheny on Thursday night, clinching the Section 1-4A boys soccer title.

Cole Kamarec also scored for the Raiders (13-0-3, 11-0-3). It was the first loss of the season for the Tigers (13-1-3, 10-1-3). The teams played to a 1-1 tie in their first meeting Sept. 19.

Allderdice 3, Mt. Lebanon 0 – Aidan Thomas had a goal and an assist and Jacek Piekut and Ethan Voight-Cherna added a goal apiece for Allderdice (3-11, 3-10) in a Section 2-4A win over Mt. Lebanon (6-10-1, 6-7-1).

Beaver 3, Riverside 1 – Anthony Furda scored two goals and Joseph Pruszenski added a goal to lead Beaver (9-6, 8-4) to a Section 4-2A win over Riverside (4-10, 3-9).

Belle Vernon 4, McGuffey 0 – Trevor Kovatch had a pair of goals and Tim Reda and Brandon Yeschenko also scored as Belle Vernon (14-2, 13-1) beat McGuffey (12-5, 10-4) to clinch sole possession of first place in Section 3-2A.

Bentworth 6, Chartiers-Houston 0 – Ryan Colbert recorded a hat trick, Dillan Colbert scored a pair of goals and Ryan Moessner added another for Bentworth (13-2) in a nonsection win against Chartiers-Houston (2-15). John Scott had three assists for the Bearcats.

Beth-Center 2, Ligonier Valley 1 – Mikey Rodriguez and Nekoda Bundy scored for Beth-Center (10-6, 5-5) in a Section 2-1A win against Ligonier Valley (4-10-1, 1-9).

Bethel Park 4, Ringgold 1 – Jackson Friday had a hat trick to help Bethel Park (15-1-1, 13-0-1) complete an undefeated Section 3-3A season in a win over Ringgold (6-10, 4-9). Xavier Jackson added a goal for the Black Hawks.

Butler 7, North Hills 2 – Nick Niebauer collected two goals and an assist and Noah Ernst and Alex Lourens each added a goal and an assist for Butler (12-2-3, 9-2-2) in a Section 1-4A win over North Hills (4-12-1, 1-12-1). Drew Knight, Alfons Semmler and Mason Anderson also scored for the Golden Tornado.

Deer Lakes 6, Freeport 1 – Collin Rodgers and Peyton Kushon each recorded hat tricks to lead Deer Lakes (14-2, 13-1) to a Section 2-2A win over Freeport (8-8, 7-7). Kushon and Artemey Parshyn each had two assists for the Lancers. The loss, coupled with Jeannette’s win over Leechburg, eliminated the Yellowjackets from playoff contention.

Eden Christian 8, South Side 0 – Ben Rice and Cole King scored two goals each to lead Eden Christian (12-2-2, 9-1-2) past South Side (0-15, 0-12) in Section 1-A.

Elizabeth Forward 5, South Allegheny 1 – Will Sinay scored two goals while Hugo Davila-Sanz, Evan Marasco and Aidan Davis each added a goal for Elizabeth Forward (9-5-1, 8-4-1) in a Section 1-2A victory over South Allegheny (1-15-1, 0-14).

Greensburg Central Catholic 5, California 1 – Jackson Vacanti had two goals and two assists and James Brewer had a goal and two assists for Greensburg Central Catholic (7-9, 5-5) in a Section 2-A win over California (3-12, 1-9). Grant Brewer and Andrew McIntyre also scored for the Centurions.

Jeannette 13, Leechburg 0 – Jordan Taylor scored eight times to lead Jeannette (10-6-1, 7-6-1) past Leechburg (0-14, 0-13) in Section 2-2A. Coupled with Freeport’s loss to Deer Lakes, the win clinched a playoff spot for the Jayhawks. Jared Vincent had a pair of goals, and Jerry Davis, Stone Markham and McAlister Steele also scored for Jeannette.

Knoch 12, Derry 0 – Austin Friedline scored four goals, Tony Lajevic, Mason Nebel and Sam Caldwell each scored a pair of goals and Will Parisi and Lucas Christopher chipped in a goal apiece as Knoch (11-7, 11-3) rolled to a Section 2-2A win over Derry (2-14, 2-12).

Montour 3, Blackhawk 0 – Dom Passaro scored two goals and Andrew Prunier added one to lead Montour (12-3, 12-2) past Blackhawk (3-15, 1-13) in a Section 2-3A win.

Mt. Pleasant 3, Waynesburg 0 – Aidan Johnson had two goals, Grant Zahrobsky also scored and Jake McGuinness preserved the shutout as Mt. Pleasant (12-3, 12-2) beat Waynesburg (5-11, 4-10), finishing its Section 3-2A schedule in second place.

Norwin 1, Upper St. Clair 1 – Carson Zadylak scored for Norwin (12-4-1, 10-3-1) and Joe Donnelly scored for Upper St. Clair (13-1-2, 11-1-2) as the top two teams in Section 2-4A played to a draw.

Penn-Trafford 5, McKeesport 0 – Ben Luchs netted a pair of goals and Logan Murphy, Daniel Carr and Eric Biroscak also scored for Penn-Trafford (5-11-2, 4-8-2) in a Section 4-3A win over McKeesport (0-15, 0-13).

Peters Township 6, Hempfield 0 – Brett Martin, Nathan Froelich, Connor Heinsen, Dean Cada, Matt Pollock and Brady Utchel scored for Peters Township (11-3-1, 10-3-1) in a Section 2-4A win over Hempfield (0-15, 0-13).

Plum 2, Penn Hills 0 – Tristin Ralph had two goals, both assisted by Garrett Chandler, and Owen Zalewski recorded the shutout as Plum (17-1, 14-0) finished undefeated in Section 4-3A with a win over Penn Hills (5-10-1, 3-10-1).

Quaker Valley 13, Ellwood City 0 – Jack Karwoski and Colin Benge had hat tricks and Kiril Grin added two goals for Quaker Valley (13-3, 11-1) in a Section 4-2A win over Ellwood City (0-12, 0-12). Liam Miller, Matteo Castellini, Bennett Haas, Carter Turk and Isaac Williams also scored.

Shady Side Academy 7, Greensburg Salem 0 – Amir Awais scored four goals to power Shady Side Academy (11-3-1, 10-2-1) past Greensburg Salem (5-11, 4-10) in Section 2-2A. Mark Bence, Chris Bennett and Santiago Maiz also scored.

Springdale 6, St. Joseph 0 – John Duku had a pair of goals, Mason Gent, Caleb Leahy and Patrick Wylly had a goal and an assist and Brennan Mattie also scored for Springdale (11-3, 10-2) in a Section 3-A win over St. Joseph (0-14, 0-12). Billy Lawrence had two assists and Noah Skaugen recorded the shutout. Springdale’s win coupled with Burrell’s 2-0 loss to Winchester Thurston gave the Dynamos and Bucs (12-2, 10-2) each a share of the section title. They split a pair of regular season meetings.

Thomas Jefferson 7, Uniontown 1 – Ray Schrello netted four goals and Brayden Miller had a hat trick for Thomas Jefferson (14-1-1, 12-1-1) in a Section 3-3A win over Uniontown (5-13, 2-12).

Trinity 3, Laurel Highlands 1 – Tyler Johnson, Andy Palm and John Garcia had a goal each for Trinity (8-5-1, 8-5-1) in a Section 3-3A victory over Laurel Highlands (6-11, 4-10).

Yough 5, Washington 1 – Collin Barner and Isaac Pacacha had two goals apiece and Tyler Woloshun added a goal and an assist for Yough (9-7-1, 8-6) in a Section 3-2A win over Washington (5-12, 5-9). Noah Jucevich had two assists.

Girls soccer

Charleroi 2, South Allegheny 0 – Bella Carroto scored her 100th career goal, McKenna DeUnger also found the net and Addison Conrad recorded the shutout to lead Charleroi (13-1, 10-1) past South Allegheny (11-6, 6-5), clinching the Section 2-A title outright.

Greensburg Central Catholic 8, Steel Valley 0 – Riley Kerr scored five goals and Jiana Patterson had a goal and two assists for Greensburg Central Catholic (8-2, 8-2) in a Section 1-A win over Steel Valley (2-14-1, 2-8-1). Sophia Fisher and Addison Vacanti also scored for the Centurions.

Indiana 7, Obama Academy 0 – Sophie Scardina scored two goals while Ella Myers, Mae Turner, Sydney Anderson and Bella Antonacci each added a goal as Indiana (4-10, 3-8) shut out Obama Academy (1-13, 0-10) in Section 1-3A.

Quaker Valley 2, Sewickley Academy 1 – Mia Strelec and Ari Bosh scored a goal apiece to lead Quaker Valley (10-4-1) past Sewickley Academy (6-7) in a nonsection win.

Girls volleyball

Beaver 3, Neshannock 0 – Chloe List had 15 kills and 10 digs, Kailyn Connelly had eight kills and two blocks and Aubrey Bumblis had 17 digs and four aces for Beaver (14-0, 12-0) in a Section 1-2A win against Neshannock (10-3, 9-3). Zoe Ringer had 36 assists, two aces and 10 digs for the Bobcats.

Brownsville 3, Bentworth 1 – Skyler Gates had 22 kills and seven blocks and Ava Clark added 14 kills and 17 digs as Brownsville (9-7, 8-6) won in Section 3-2A. Mackenzie Wade dished out 34 assists and Cassidee Settles had 25 digs.

Canon McMillan 3, Baldwin 0 – Natalie Carr had 11 kills and three aces, Abby Tucker had nine kills and Josie Carter had 17 assists and seven digs for Canon McMillan in a Section 2-4A sweep over Baldwin.

Indiana 3, Highlands 0 – Taylor Wood had nine kills and three blocks and Hannah Cowburn had 30 assists, three kills and four digs for Indiana in a Section 5-3A win over Highlands.

Ligonier Valley 3, Apollo-Ridge 0 – Abby Tutino had 14 service points, Teagan Peltz-Palko had seven service points, Lacy Sosko had nine kills and Saylor Clise had 10 assists as Ligonier Valley (6-10, 4-8) beat Apollo-Ridge (5-9, 3-9) in Section 5-2A.

Mapletown 3, Geibel 0 – Bailey Rafferty had 15 assists and 13 aces and Miranda Wise had six kills and four aces for Mapletown in a Section 2-A win over Geibel.

Southmoreland 3, Washington 0 – Taylor Doppelheuer had seven kills, Gianna Perbonish had 15 service points and Riley Puckey had 15 assists and five kills as Southmoreland (17-0, 15-0) swept Washington (0-15, 0-14) in Section 3-2A.

St. Joseph 3, Trinity Christian 1 – Kate Giannetta had 23 service points, Jillian Bloch added 12 service points and Julie Spinelli recorde five kills to lead St. Joseph (11-4, 7-3) to a Section 4-A win.

Field hockey

Penn-Trafford 3, Fox Chapel 1 – Ava Herschberger scored two goals and Carley Simon added another as Penn-Trafford beat Fox Chapel in Section 2A. Annie Moun scored for the Foxes.

Pine-Richland 3, Mt. Lebanon 0 – Anna Merlack had two goals and an assist for Pine-Richland in a Section 3A win over Mt. Lebanon.

Hockey

Avonworth 6, Freeport 2 – Aidan O’Dell scored twice, Cooper Powell had a goal and three assists and Richard Malsch and Linus Jesionowski each added a goal and an assist for Avonworth (2-0) in Class A. Landen Kozma and Dylan Toborkey scored for Freeport (0-2).

Carrick 4, Ringgold 3 – Tanner Heidkamp had two goals and Christian Cole and Ivan Manculich also scored for Carrick (1-1-0) in a Varsity D2 win. Bruce Santina scored a pair of goals for Ringgold (0-2-0).

Chartiers Valley 3, Beaver 1 – Noah Callender scored twice and Chris Deangelis added a goal to lift Chartiers Valley (2-0-0) past Beaver (1-1-0) in Class A. Carson Cuddy scored for the Bobcats.

Indiana 5, Butler 3 – Ash Lockard had a hat trick, Landin Wilson added a goal and an assist and Garrett Goodrich also scored as Indiana (2-1) won in Class A. Andrew Roskovski, Cullen Miller and Owen Denny scored for Butler (1-1).

Latrobe 4, North Hills 1 – Louis Amatucci had a goal and an assist and Joey Crimboli, Dylan Morris and Nigel Morris also scored for Latrobe (2-1) in Class 2A. Chris Muschar scored for North Hills (0-3).

Mt. Lebanon 3, Central Catholic 2 – Connor Ribstein scored the game-winning goal with 46 seconds left in the third period to lead Mt. Lebanon (1-1) to a Class 3A win. Ben Kurta and Xavier Bias also scored for Mt. Lebanon. Adam Sarkis and Aaron Daley scored for Central Catholic (1-1).

Neshannock 6, Deer Lakes 2 – Gio Valentine factored in on every Neshannock goal with three goals and three assists in a Varsity D2 win. John Moniodes added a pair of goals and assists for Neshannock (3-0). Elliot Belli scored twice for Deer Lakes (1-1).

Pine-Richland 4, Upper St. Clair 1 – Cullen Campbell had a goal and an assist and Jeremy Casper, Hayden Keegan and Benjamin Baileys also scored for Pine-Richland (1-1) in a Class 3A victory. Luke Fisher scored for Upper St. Clair (1-1).

Seneca Valley 6, Canon-McMillan 2 – Jacob Komaniak had a hat trick, Antonio Micco scored twice and Ethan Lindberg collected three assists for Seneca Valley (1-1) in Class 3A. Braydon Phillips and Ben Votodian scored for Canon-McMillan (0-2).

Shaler 8, Greensburg Salem 4 – Jacob Kunc scored a hat trick and Chase Irwin netted two goals as Shaler (1-0-0) doubled up Greensburg Salem (2-1-0) in Class A. Carter Cherok scored a pair of goals in the loss.

Thomas Jefferson 3, Armstrong 2 – Ryan Galis had a goal and an assist and Scott Allan and Connor McCann also scored for Thomas Jefferson (3-0) in a Class 2A win. Jake Graff had a goal and an assist for Armstrong (0-2).

Girls tennis

WPIAL team championships – Grace Stitt and Emma Speiss won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles to lift No. 5 Hampton to a 4-1 win over No. 4 Indiana in the Class 2A quarterfinals.

The doubles teams of Samantha Jones and McKenna Restori and Greta Hamlin and Laniya Ward also won for the Talbots. Eve Kuzneski took the No. 3 singles match for Indiana.

Hampton will meet top-seeded Knoch in the semifinals Friday at North Allegheny. The Knights beat No. 9 Winchester Thurston, 4-1.

In the bottom half of the bracket, No. 3 North Catholic defeated No. 6 Beaver, 3-2, and No. 2 Sewickley Academy swept No. 7 Quaker Valley, 5-0.
