High school roundup for Oct. 17, 2023: John Krug’s hat trick lifts Chartiers Valley into playoffs on season’s final day

John Krug scored a hat trick to lead Chartiers Valley to a 3-2 victory over West Allegheny to claim the final spot in the WPIAL Class 3A playoff field Tuesday night.

The Colts (7-9, 7-7) finished fourth in the Section 2 standings, just ahead of Central Valley (8-7-2, 6-6-2). Andy Cosnek and Aaron Bouch scored for West Allegheny (4-11-1, 4-9-1).

Allderdice 13, Brashear 0 – Peter Myrianthopolous buried four goals to lead Allderdice (6-10) to a nonsection win against Brashear.

Beth-Center 1, Waynesburg 0 – Mikey Rodriguez scored the only goal and Luke Amon recorded the shutout as Beth-Center (11-6) shutout Waynesburg (5-11) in nonsection play.

Canon-McMillan 2, Bethel Park 1 — Zach Wickard scored both goals for Canon-McMillan (10-6-1) in a nonsection victory. Jackson Friday scored for Bethel Park (15-2-1).

Central Valley 7, Ambridge 0 – Cameron DeVincentis had a hat trick and Jack Dobronz added a pair of goals for Central Valley (8-7-2, 6-6-2) in a Section 2-3A win over Ambridge (1-16-1, 1-12-1). Joseph Skibinski and Owen Shearer also scored.

East Allegheny 2, Burrell 1 – Joe Connors and Colin Goldstein scored to lead East Allegheny (11-4-1) to a nonsection win. Taber Driscoll scored for Burrell (12-3).

Freedom 4, Riverside 2 – Jordan Delon had a hat trick to power Freedom (7-9) to a nonsection win over Riverside (4-11-1).

Freeport 5, St. Joseph 0 – Angelo Porco scored a hat trick as Ben Irvine and Vinny Porco each netted a goal for Freeport (9-8) in a nonsection win over St. Joseph (1-15). Judah Thompson made four saves for the shutout for the Yellowjackets.

Kiski Area 5, Greensburg Central Catholic 1 – RJ Long collected three goals and an assist to lead Kiski Area (4-10-1) to a nonsection win over Greensburg Central Catholic (7-10). Austin Beck had a goal and three assists and Phil Harris a goal and an assist for the Cavaliers.

Springdale 2, Jeannette 1 – Billy Lawrence had a goal and an assist and Mason Gent also scored for Springdale (13-3) in a nonsection win. Macallister Steele scored for Jeannette (10-7-1).

Thomas Jefferson 4, Elizabeth Forward 0 – Ray Schrello and Jake Shoemaker scored twice apiece for Thomas Jefferson (14-2-1) in a nonsection win over Elizabeth Forward (10-5-1).

Trinity 5, Washington 1 – Faiden Hodgson recorded a hat trick to lead Trinity (10-5-1) to a nonsection win against Washington (5-13).

Girls soccer

Allderdice 4, Keystone Oaks 0 – Elly Martin, Mikayla Sharif, Moriah Neiss and Kylee Shevitz scored and Esme Offner and Cordelia Lackner combined on a shutout for Allderdice (5-11) in a nonsection win over Keystone Oaks (9-7-1).

Belle Vernon 2, Greensburg Salem 2 – Abby Russell and Ava Scalise scored and Kataira Rhodes had two assists for Belle Vernon (7-9-2) in a nonsection draw. Lauryn Swierzynski and Olivia Smith scored for Greensburg Salem (3-12-3).

Burrell 10, Apollo-Ridge 0 – Tessa Mathabel recorded a hat trick, McKenna Miller and Miley Kariotis each had a pair of goals and Katie Koehler, Eva Wilson and Leah Waldsmith also scored as Burrell (12-4, 8-2) blanked Apollo-Ridge (2-9, 2-8) in Section 2-2A.

Deer Lakes 1, Eden Christian 1 – Bryanna Simonetti scored for the Lancers as Deer Lakes (9-6-3) and Eden Christian (8-5-1) played to a nonsection draw.

Freeport 4, Riverview 1 – Camryn Woods scored a pair of goals while Peyton Los and Nia DiSanti each added a goal for Freeport (13-1-1) in a nonsection defeat of Riverview (15-2). Lola Abraham scored for the Raiders.

Moon 4, Chartiers Valley 0 – Elizabeth Gallup, Eva Estright, Lilly Snyder and Anna Palm scored and Moon (12-1-2, 9-1-2) secured the Section 4-3A title with a win over Chartiers Valley (4-11, 2-10). Sereyah Leech recorded the shutout in net.

Mt. Pleasant 9, Hempfield 0 – Morgan and Riley Gesinski scored two goals apiece to lead Mt. Pleasant (15-2) to a nonsection win over Hempfield (1-17). Rylin Bugosh, Maddie Barrick, Isabel Overly, Adi Gardner and Maggie Piper also scored.

Peters Township 10, Ellis School 0 – Bailey Lutz recorded a hat trick and Cam Klein and Atleigh Ciprich added two goals each to help Peters Township (13-1-2) earn a nonsection win over Ellis School (8-7-1).

Southmoreland 2, Bentworth 1 – Hannah Conn and Aubrey Seder scored to lead Southmoreland (10-5) past Bentworth (8-8-1) in nonsection play.

Springdale 4, North Hills 1 – Briana Ross collected three goals and an assist and Charli McClafferty also scored to help Springdale (12-3) to a nonsection win over North Hills (0-18). Molly Hurley, Ashley Ross and Hailey Marchlewski also dished out assists for the Dynamos.

Thomas Jefferson 3, South Park 0 – Sami Maglicco netted a pair to lead Thomas Jefferson (16-1) past South Park (13-5) in a nonsection match. Natalie Lamenza also scored for the Jaguars.

Girls volleyball

Beaver 3, Laurel 0 – Chloe List had 12 kills, 13 digs and two aces, Jaedyn Brown had 10 kills, six digs and four aces and Zoe Ringer had 34 assists and eight digs as Beaver (15-0, 13-0) swept Laurel (4-13, 4-9) in a Section 1-2A win.

Derry 3, Apollo-Ridge 0 – Emily Berkhimer had 14 kills, Katie Dunlap had eight digs and Regan Repak had 32 assists as Derry (11-5, 10-3) beat Apollo-Ridge (5-10, 3-10) in straight sets in Section 5-2A.

Hampton 3, Gateway 0 – Emmy Schrom had 14 kills, Allison Schepner added nine and Payton Galietti had eight for Hampton in a Section 1-3A win. Avery Koontz had 12 digs and five aces and Lilly Muczinski handed out 30 assists.

St. Joseph 3, Springdale 1 – Kate Giannetta had 13 service points and Jamie Noonan added seven service points as St. Joseph (12-4, 8-3) bested Springdale (3-11, 3-8) in Section 4-1A.

Field hockey

Penn-Trafford 6, Upper St. Clair 1 – Ava Hershberger scored all six goals for Penn-Trafford in a Section 2A win. Mackenzie Keenan had three assists and Liz Welsh added an assist. Eviania Ali scored for Upper St. Clair.

Hockey

Freeport 3, Richland 2 – Bantam Semanko, Alex Kobelenske and Jacob Miller scored as Freeport (1-2) defeated Richland (0-2) in Class A. Jack Lorence and Jonah Weaver scored for Richland.

Norwin 6, Bishop McCort 2 – Aaron Varrati scored two goals while Dom Cerilli, Joey Vecchio, Zayn Zeravica and Dom Costantino each chipped in a goal as Norwin (2-1) beat Bishop McCort (1-1) in Class 2A. Timur Naletov and Nikita Kolomejtsev scored for McCort.
