High school roundup for Oct. 2, 2023: South Park maintains grip on 1st place with win over Shady Side Academy

Emelyn Schlater scored the winning goal as South Park (9-3, 7-0) maintained sole possession of first place in Section 4-2A girls soccer with a 1-0 victory over Shady Side Academy (9-3, 5-2) on Monday night.
Ambridge 2, Hopewell 1 (OT) – Hayden Grant scored to tie the game and Norah Marchionda buried the game-winner in overtime to give Ambridge (3-8, 2-7) a Section 1-2A win over Hopewell (0-10, 0-8).
Avonworth 4, Central Valley 0 – Minah Syam netted a pair to lead Avonworth (10-1-2, 8-1) in a Section 1-3A win over Central Valley (3-8-1, 3-5). Gianna Babusci and Caroline Sweeney contributed a goal each for the Antelopes.
Bentworth 1, South Allegheny 0 (OT) – Bella Moyer scored the game-winning goal in overtime to give Bentworth (5-6-1, 3-5-1) the Section 2-A win over South Allegheny (9-5, 4-4). Cassidy Sicchitano kept a clean net for the shutout for the Bearcats.
Canon-McMillan 3, Norwin 0 – Morgan Dyer scored twice and Bella Bellino had a goal to help Canon-McMillan (6-4-2, 6-2-2) blank Norwin (3-9, 3-6) in Section 2-4A.
Charleroi 12, Beth-Center 0 – McKenna DeUnger and Bella Carroto each scored four goals to lead Charleroi (11-1, 8-1) past Beth-Center (2-9, 0-8) in Section 2-A. Taylor Ramsdell had two goals and Anna Kondratowicz and Rhianna Grogan also scored.
Franklin Regional 1, Gateway 0 – Reilly Weaver scored the winning goal with 12 minutes to play to lead Franklin Regional (8-3-1, 6-2) past Gateway (4-6-1, 3-6) in Section 3-3A. Allyssa Velasquez assisted on the goal and Aris Lamanna recorded the shutout.
Freeport 2, Burrell 1 (OT) – Samantha Liput and Camryn Woods scored to lift Freeport (8-1-1, 5-1-1) past Burrell (9-3, 5-2) in a battle of top teams in Section 2-2A.
Hampton 6, Kiski Area 0 – Sara Kenst and Kendall Hoolahan had two goals apiece and Emma Langer and Lexi Shane also scored to lead Hampton (9-3, 7-2) past Kiski Area (6-7-1, 4-3-1) in Section 1-3A. Isabella English and Olivia Graswick combined on the shutout.
Indiana 2, Armstrong 1 – Emily Betsinger scored the game-winner with just over two minutes remaining to push Indiana (3-8, 2-6) past Armstrong (4-10, 2-7) in Section 1-3A.
Keystone Oaks 4, West Mifflin 3 – Aly Simon and Maddie Arment each scored a pair of goals as Keystone Oaks (9-4, 5-2) beat West Mifflin (5-6, 2-5) in Section 4-2A.
Knoch 13, Valley 0 – Maggie Barnes and Emma Slusser each had a goal and two assists as 13 players found the net for Knoch (8-4-2, 5-2-1) in a Section 2-2A win over Valley (1-7-1, 0-7). Izabella Oskin, Laurel Hull, Macrina Robb, Hannah Klemm and Alaina Fields each had a goal and an assist.
Mars 3, Oakland Catholic 0 – Addi Girdwood had a goal and an assist and Maeve O’Leary and Jenna Caringola also scored for Mars (11-0, 9-0) in a Section 1-3A win over Oakland Catholic (4-5-1, 4-3-1). Kate McEnroe and Lily Goodworth combined on the shutout.
Moon 2, West Allegheny 0 – Elizabeth Gallup scored both goals for Moon (9-1-1, 6-1-1) in a Section 4-3A win over West Allegheny (8-6, 4-5). Serayah Leech recorded the shutout.
Mt. Pleasant 14, Ligonier Valley 0 – Morgan Gesinski scored four goals and Rylin Bugosh and Jaden Kantorik each had hat tricks for Mt. Pleasant (10-3, 7-0) in a Section 3-2A win over Ligonier Valley (0-13, 0-7). Camryn Kapr scored twice and Maggie Piper and Maddie Barrick also found the net.
Obama Academy 7, McKeesport 0 – Mariah Gaines and Kiera Dodds scored two goals apiece to help Obama Academy (1-10) to a nonsection win over McKeesport. Diya Singh, Carolina Jaramillo and DeAnna Perez Hall also scored, and Cora Myers, Jay Shank-Noel and Lydia Beckerman combined on the shutout.
Peters Township 4, Baldwin 0 – Atleigh Ciprich, Ella Neupaver, Camryn Klein and Grace O’Korn scored for Peters Township (11-0-1, 9-0-1) in a Section 2-4A win over Baldwin (4-9, 1-9).
Riverview 10, Serra Catholic 0 – Lola Abraham had three goals and two assists and Georgia Tsambis collected three goals and an assist to pace Riverview (10-1, 7-1) in a Section 1-A win. Hannah Hudack had a goal and three assists, Katerina Tsambis added a goal and an assist, and Lily Hood and Catie Hoolahan also scored for the Raiders.
Southmoreland 6, Yough 0 – Aubrey Seder and Megan Mehall each had a pair of goals while Lizzy Boone and Addy Jordan also scored as Southmoreland (7-3, 6-1) shut out Yough (4-10, 3-4) in Section 3-2A.
Springdale 5, Seton LaSalle 0 – Briana Ross had two goals and an assist and Kai Williams also scored twice to lead Springdale (8-1, 6-1) past Seton LaSalle (5-6, 3-5) in Section 1-A. Molly Hurley had a goal and an assist.
Upper St. Clair 3, Mt. Lebanon 0 – Maeryn Mannix recorded a hat trick and Cam Friday recorded her 11th shutout as Upper St. Clair (11-1, 9-1) blanked Mt Lebanon (7-5-1, 5-4-1) in Section 2-4A.
Woodland Hills 7, East Allegheny 1 – Emma Reyes scored four goals to power Woodland Hills (5-5, 4-3) past East Allegheny (2-7, 1-6) in Section 3-2A.
Boys soccer
Beaver 1, Blackhawk 0 – Evan Baker scored the game-winner off a feed from Anton Kuespert to lift Beaver (7-4) over Blackhawk (2-12) in nonsection play.
Burrell 2, Trinity Christian 1 (OT) – Jayson Ireland scored his second goal of the game in overtime to lead Burrell (10-1, 8-1) past Trinity Christian (6-3, 5-3) in Section 3-A. Cam Wagner and Calio Zanella had assists for the Bucs, who played most of the game a man down.
Carlynton 3, Bishop Canevin 0 – Wilson Choate, Ryan Lewis and Connor Hart scored while Dylan Sunderland kept a clean net for the shutout as Carlynton (8-5, 5-3) beat Bishop Canevin (4-9, 3-5) in Section 4-A.
Carrick 1, Valley 0 – Steven Garcia scored the decisive goal as Carrick defeated Valley in a nonsection match.
Charleroi 8, Laurel Highlands 1 – Arlo McIntyre scored four goals and Landon Barcus netted a pair to lead Charleroi (12-0) to a nonsection win. Jake Chambers and Max Goodwin each added a goal for the Cougars. Ryan Rockwell scored for Laurel Highlands (4-9).
Freedom 3, Mohawk 2 – Jordan Delon scored a pair of goals to lead Freedom (5-5) to a nonsection win. Joey Whippo had two goals for Mohawk (3-9).
Greensburg Central Catholic 10, Geibel 1 – Jackson Vacanti scored four goals and Grant Brewer and Niko Miller added two goals apiece to lead Greensburg Central Catholic (5-7) to a nonsection win over Geibel. Gavin Rigby and Logan Sebek also scored for the Centurions.
Keystone Oaks 4, South Allegheny 0 – Cy Garcia scored twice and Jake Loper and Eltay Sagynbekov had a goal apiece as Keystone Oaks (7-5, 7-4) blanked South Allegheny (1-12-1, 0-11) in Section 1-2A.
Field hockey
Pine-Richland 13, Allderdice 0 – Jessica Albertson scored five goals and added an assist to lead Pine-Richland to a Section 3A victory.
Girls volleyball
Derry 3, Greensburg Salem 0 – Emily Berkhimer had 15 kills, Katie Dunlap recorded seven digs and Regan Repak dished out 19 assists to lead Derry to a nonsection win. Haylee Myers added five kills, Alayna Williams and Cassie Byers each had six digs and Mylah O’Hanlon had 11 assists.
Hampton 3, Penn-Trafford 0 – Emmy Schrom had 19 kills, Lilly Muczinski handed out 34 assists and Avery Koontz had 13 digs for Hampton in a nonsection win. Payton Galietti added eight kills.
Mapletown 3, Beth-Center 1 – Isabella Garnek had 11 kills, Miranda Wise followed with 10 kills and Bri Ashton had 19 digs and five aces as Mapletown (6-4) beat Beth-Center (3-8) in a nonsection match. Bailey Rafferty had 30 assists, 16 digs and seven aces for the Maples.
Southmoreland 3, Belle Vernon 1 – Amarah McCutcheon had 12 kills, Makayla Etling added 10 digs and 22 service points, and Ainsley Martin had 15 digs as Southmoreland improved to 12-0 with a nonsection win.

Avonworth 9, Wheeling Park 3 – Richard Malsh had a hat trick, Aidan O’Dell scored twice and Jack Dolan and Joey Moore each had a goal and two assists for Avonworth (1-0) in a Class A win over Wheeling Park (0-1).
Fox Chapel 3. Armstrong 1 – Killian Kissane and Grady Cullen each scored a goal to lead Fox Chapel (1-0) to a victory against Armstrong (0-1) in Class 2A. Bruce Liptak scored for the River Hawks.
Greensburg Salem 3, Mars 1 – Hunter Webb, Luke Dieter and Dylan Swierczynski scored for Greensburg Salem (1-0) in a Class A win over Mars (0-1). Grant Weaver scored for the Fightin’ Planets.
Indiana 8, West Allegheny 3 – Phil Bell had a hat trick and Gabe Nettleton scored twice for Indiana (1-0) in a Class A win. Branden Switalski scored twice for West Allegheny (0-1).
Latrobe 4, Franklin Regional 3 (SO) – Dylan Morris scored the tying goal in the third period and Latrobe (1-0) won in a shootout in Class 2A. Louie Amatucci had a goal and an assist and Jacob Hannah also scored for Latrobe. Max Rutkowski had two goals and Max Williams also scored for Franklin Regional (0-0-1).
Meadville 9, Montour 7 – Ryan Yunik scored a hat trick and Robert Mahoney scored twice while Rocco Tartaglione, Preston Phillis, Phil Pandolph and Dougie Phillis each added a goal as Meadville (1-0) beat Montour (0-1) in Class A. Hunter Fielder scored two goals to lead the Spartans.
Morgantown 10, Knoch 2 – Ayden Shepard had three goals and three assists to lead Morgantown (1-0) to a Varsity D2 win. Geno Valenti, Jacob Hollander and Brayden Hellen each scored twice. Braydon Esplen had a goal and an assist for Knoch (0-1).
Neshannock 9, Connellsville 0 – Giovanni Valentine had a hat trick and added an assist, Micah Dejulia collected two goals and three assists, and Nick Bucci had two goals and two assists to lead Neshannock (1-0) past Connellsville (0-1) in Varsity D2.
