High school roundup for Oct. 31, 2023: North Allegheny holds off Butler, earns trip to Highmark

Mykola Denysenko scored the go-ahead goal in the 35th minute and Graham Kunz added a needed insurance goal in the second half to lead No. 2 North Allegheny (16-1-3) to a 3-2 victory over No. 3 Butler (14-3-3) in the WPIAL Class 4A boys soccer semifinals Tuesday night. The Tigers will take on eighth-seeded Norwin in the finals Saturday at Highmark Stadium.

Girls soccer

Avonworth 2, South Park 1 – Fiona Mahan had a goal and an assist and Gianna Babusci also scored as top-seeded Avonworth (17-1-2) beat No. 5 South Park (15-6) in a Class 2A semifinal win. The Antelopes will play No. 7 Shady Side Academy in the WPIAL finals at 11 a.m. Saturday at Highmark Stadium. Emma Luther also had an assist for the Antelopes.

Moon 1, Montour 0 (SO) – The defending Class 3A champs survived a semifinal scare as No. 3 Moon (15-1-2) got past No. 7 Montour (14-3-3) in a penalty shootout after the teams were scoreless throughout regulation and overtime. The Tigers will face No. 5 South Fayette in the WPIAL finals Saturday at Highmark Stadium.

Shady Side Academy 3, Burrell 0 – Seventh-seeded Shady Side Academy (15-3-1) ended the WPIAL title hopes of No. 6 Burrell (14-5) in the Class 2A semifinals. The Bulldogs will meet No. 1 Avonworth in the WPIAL finals Saturday.

South Fayette 1, Mars 0 – Mia Deramo scored the winning goal in the shootout for No. 5 South Fayette (14-4-2) in a Class 3A semifinal win over No. 1 Mars (16-1). The Lions will face No. 3 Moon in the WPIAL finals Saturday at Highmark Stadium. Alex Delaney and Anna Fraps also converted their penalties and Caitlyn Thompson stopped five Mars shooters for South Fayette.

Girls volleyball

Beaver 3, Quaker Valley 1 – Chloe List had 16 kills and a season-high 31 digs to lead No. 2 Beaver (19-0) past No. 3 Quaker Valley (16-3) in the Class 2A semifinals, 25-21, 20-25, 25-11, 25-21. Jaedyn Brown added a season-high 12 kills, Kailyn Connelly contibuted 8 kills and Lanie Malobabich had a season-best five blocks. Zoe Ringer dished out 39 assists and Aubrey Bumblis had 31 digs. Beaver will meet top-seeded Freeport in the WPIAL finals Saturday at Peters Township.

Bishop Canevin 3, Frazier 1 – No. 3 Bishop Canevin (19-1) advanced to the Class A finals with a win over No. 2 Frazier (18-2), 25-17, 25-19, 22-25, 25-21. The Crusaders will face No. 1 Serra Catholic on Saturday.

Hockey

Beaver 2, Freeport 1 (OT) – Roman Guido scored the winning goal 30 seconds into overtime to lead Beaver (2-3) to a Class A win. Trevor Schmidt also scored and Caleb Berardelli made 27 saves for Beaver. Alex Kobelenske scored and Tyler Lang made 36 saves for Freeport (1-3-1).

Carrick 5, Deer Lakes 3 – Tanner Heidkamp and Drew Bird scored two goals apiece and Max Hagan added one for Carrick (4-1) in a Varsity D2 win. Ryan Grunden scored two goals and Owen Neidig also scored for Deer Lakes (4-2).

Greensburg Salem 3, North Catholic 2 (SO) – North Catholic’s Beckett Dunn scored the tying goal in the final minute of regulation, but Greensburg Salem (4-3) won in a shootout in Class A. Luke Dieter and Mikey Kingerski scored for Greensburg Salem. Ryan Berry also scored for North Catholic (2-1-1).

Moon 8, Westmont Hilltop 2 – Josh Hatton and Jordan Rieke scored two goals apiece for Moon (3-1) in a Class A win. Ethan Downey and Gavin Replogle scored for Westmont Hilltop (0-3). Logan Rieke, Brody Eckert, Roman Suriano and Eric Hartman also scored for the Tigers.

Peters Township 6, Mt. Lebanon 2 – Camden Martin had a hat trick and Blake Evancic, Drew Alexander and Troy Jones added goals to lead Peters Township (2-3) to a Class 3A win. Jacob Lehman and Conner Ribstein scored for Mt. Lebanon (3-2).

Seneca Valley 4, Canon-McMillan 1 – Ethan Riffe had a goal and two assists and Andrew Malichky, Tyler Garvin and Ethan Lindberg also scored for Seneca Valley (3-2) in Class 3A. Rocco Musto had a goal for Canon-McMillan (0-4).
