High school roundup for Sept. 1, 2018: Peters Township boys top Penn-Trafford

Nate Lopus scored two goals to lead Peters Township (1-0) to a 4-1 win over Penn-Trafford in the Peters Township tournament.

Brian Bruzdewicz and David Phillips scored goals for Peters Township. Noah Schlessinger scored the lone goal for Penn-Trafford.

North Catholic 3, Sewickley Academy 2, OT — Bryce Kopchak scored two goals and added an assist to lead North Catholic (1-0) to a win over Sewickley Academy (0-1) in the Peters Township tournament. Joe Kearney scored the third goal for North Catholic.

Belle Vernon 2, West Mifflin 1 — At the Belle Vernon tournament, Markello Apodiakos and Aaron Brown scored first-half goals in the host team’s win against West Mifflin (0-1). Goalkeeper T.J. Watson turned aside four of five shots for Belle Vernon (1-0).

Norwin 6, Chartiers Valley 1 — Zack Ullum netted three goals to lead Norwin (1-1) to a win over Chartiers Valley (0-2) in the Intersection Kickoff tournament at Seneca Valley. Luca Snyder, Ian Brown and Jake Nebinski all scored for Norwin in the win. Earlier in the day, Ullum scored the only goal for Norwin in a 2-1 loss to Seneca Valley.

Greensburg Salem 1, Hempfield 0 — Chris Writt scored early in the second half to lead Greensburg Salem (1-0) to a win over Hempfield (0-1) at the Hempfield tournament. The goal was assisted by Wyatt Ramer. Sage Parsley earned the shutout with seven saves.

Freeport 4, Armstrong 0 — Hunter Hardin scored a goal and had an assist to lead Freeport (1-0) to a nonsection shutout over Armstrong (0-1). Cole Bennick, Dan Lynch and Brock Loevlie also scored in the win.

Deer Lakes 2, Seton LaSalle 0 — Ryan Rodgers scored in the first half and Tristan Hinerman added a second-half goal to pace Deer Lakes (2-0) to a nonsection win over Seton LaSalle (0-1). Lancers’ goalkeeper Jesse Greyshock tallied seven saves in the win.

Ambridge 4, Highlands 1 Ambridge scored early on a Rams defensive error, Highlands’ Gabe Norris tied the game on a free kick but tourney host Ambridge (1-0) scored three unanswered goals to win a nonsection matchup.

Girls soccer

Gateway 2, Latrobe 1 — Jenna Guido and Brie Key scored for Gateway (1-0) in its nonsection win against Latrobe (0-1). Hannah Zimmerman scored Latrobe’s lone goal.

Fox Chapel 3, Penn-Trafford 2 — Blair Echnat scored a goal and had one assist to lead Fox Chapel (1-0) to a nonsection win over Penn-Trafford (0-1). Sarah Sinnott and Maura Curry scored the other two Fox Chapel goals in the first half. Kiley Dugan and Malia Kearns scored the goals for Penn-Trafford in the loss.

Bentworth 6, Uniontown 0 — Jocelyn Timlin scored three goals to lead Bentworth (2-0) to a win over Uniontown (0-2) in the Fayette County tournament. Paige Marshalek added a goal in the win and later scored both goals for Bentworth in a 2-0 win over Ringgold. Cande Kossel earned the shutout in both games. With the two wins, head coach Tyler Hamstra notched his 50th career win.

Peters Township 2, Mercyhurst Prep 1, OT — Regan LaVigna scored the game-winning goal for Peters Township (2-0) in overtime off a corner kick from Natalie Daub over Mercyhurst Prep in the South Hills Classic. Hannah Stuck scored Peters Township’s first goal.

Mt. Pleasant 8, Jeannette 0 – Mackenzie Leeder scored four goals as Mt. Pleasant (1-0) shut out Jeannette (0-1) in nonsection play. Megan Liberoni added two goals while goalkeeper Jenna Pfeifer made five saves.

Trinity 4, Greensburg Salem 0 – Sam Schury scored twice and Sarah Kuhns posted the shutout as Trinity (1-0) beat Greensburg Salem (0-1) in nonsection play. Alyssa Clutter and Courtney Dahlquist scored Trinity’s other goals.

Franklin Regional 4, Elizabeth Forward 0 – Victoria Rothrauff scored two goals and added two assists to lead Franklin Regional (1-0) to a nonsection win over Elizabeth Forward (0-1). Sydney Lindeman scored a goal and had two assists, while Anne Klingensmith added a goal in the win. Tiffany Jolayemi and Sydney Caldwell combined for the shutout for Franklin Regional.

Girls volleyball

Franklin Regional Invitational — Elizabeth Forward captured the Franklin Regional Invitational title after defeating Hampton, 1-0, in the finals. Elizabeth Forward advanced to the finals after defeating South Park, 1-0, in the semifinals. Hampton defeated Frazier, 1-0.

Butler Tournament Butler captured the Butler tournament title after defeating Kiski Area, 2-0. Butler earned a trip to the finals after defeating Cambridge Springs, 1-0. Kiski Area advanced after defeating West Shamokin, 1-0.

Cross country

Gateway Invitational — Fox Chapel captured the boys and girls team titles at the Gateway Invitational. Fox Chapel’s Christian Fitch won the boys race with a time of 17:53, while Fox Chapel’s Sarena Seegar won the girls race with a time of 21:18. In the boys race, Norwin, Bethel Park, Riverview and Baldwin rounded out the top-five, while Pine-Richland, Norwin, Vincentian Academy and West Allegheny filled out the top-five in the girls race.
