High school roundup for Sept. 12, 2023: Montour junior nets OT winner on his birthday

Junior Evan Bonato scored the winning goal with 58 seconds left in the second overtime, on his birthday, to lead undefeated Montour to a 1-0 victory over South Fayette (4-1-2, 3-1-2) in Section 2-3A boys soccer Tuesday night. Dom Passaro assisted on the winning goal for the Spartans (5-0, 5-0).

Armstrong 4, Highlands 1 – Jordan Callipare, Jacob Bowser, Sam Dosch and Hunter Reed scored for Armstrong (2-2-1, 2-2-1) in a Section 1-3A victory against Highlands (2-4, 0-4). Brendan Svinda stopped 16 shots for the River Hawks.

Belle Vernon 5, Washington 1 – Trevor Kovatch had a hat trick and Brandon Yeschenko added a goal and an assist as Belle Vernon (6-1, 5-0) beat Washington (2-6, 2-3) in Section 3-2A. Logan Metzger also scored and Benito Pesi had two assists for the Leopards.

Bentworth 12, California 3 – Ryan Moessner scored three goals and Ryan Colbert added two as Bentworth (6-1, 3-1) defeated California (1-5, 0-3) in Section 2-A. Aiden Murray, Dillan Colbert, John Scott and Andrew Vipperman each added a goal for the Bearcats.

Beth-Center 10, Geibel Catholic 1 – Joey Rodriguez scored a hat trick, Wyatt Pash buried two goals and Parker Amos added a goal and four assists as Beth-Center (4-3) beat Geibel in nonsection play. Reiner King, Joseph Minucci, Ryder Roule and Alex George each added a goal for the Bulldogs.

Burrell 9, Valley 0 – Jayson Ireland scored a pair of goals and Hadyn Herbulock, Taber Driscoll and Luke Postupack each had a goal and an assist to lead Burrell (4-1) to a nonsection win over Valley (0-3). Billy Kowalkowski, Riley Anthony, Will Doutt and Luke Guerrini also scored for the Bucs.

Butler 3, Shaler 0 – Thomas Sheptak had two goals and Chris Rubcic also scored to lead Butler (4-2-1, 3-2) past Shaler (0-6-1, 0-5) in Section 1-4A. Christian Mortimer had two assists and Drew Knight recorded the shutout for the Golden Tornado.

Canon-McMillan 9, Hempfield 0 – Vinny Acquaviva scored a hat trick and Noah DiRocco added a pair of goals as Canon-McMillan (2-4-1, 2-2-1) defeated Hempfield (0-6, 0-4) in Section 1-4A.

Charleroi 9, Ligonier Valley 1 – Landon Barcus recorded a hat trick and Ethan Hartley added a pair of goals as Charleroi (8-0, 4-0) rolled to a Section 2-A win against Ligonier Valley (1-3, 0-3). Arlo McIntyre, Bryce Large, Joel Chambers and Ritchentzky Charleus each added a goal for the Cougars.

Connellsville 4, Laurel Highlands 0 – Kasey Stanton scored two goals while Bobby Maloy and William Gillot added a goal apiece as Connellsville (4-4, 2-3) shut out Laurel Highlands (2-5, 0-5) in Section 3-3A.

Elizabeth Forward 3, West Mifflin 0 – Will Sinay scored two goals and Hugo Davilla-Sanz added another as Elizabeth Forward (2-2-1, 2-2-1) beat West Mifflin (1-7, 1-4) in Section 1-2A.

Franklin Regional 5, Penn Hills 0 – Daniel Christafano, Roman Larese, Rory Bayne, Keaton Sheetz and Jovan Sankoorikal scored as Franklin Regional (5-2, 4-1) shut out Penn Hills (1-4, 1-4) in a Section 4-3A match.

Freeport 3, Greensburg Salem 0 – Mark Caruso, Eli Hassler and Vinnie Porco scored to lead Freeport (2-4, 2-3) to a Section 2-2A win over Greensburg Salem (3-3, 2-3). Xavier DeWitt had two assists and Judah Thompson stopped four shots for the shutout.

Jeannette 14, Derry 0 – Jordan Taylor filled the net with six goals and Austin Emery recorded a hat trick as Jeannette (4-2, 3-2) pummeled Derry (1-6, 1-4) in Section 2-2A. Jared Vincent, Stone Markham, Zion Harper, McAlister Steele and Dominick Semplice each scored a goal for the Jayhawks.

Keystone Oaks 3, Woodland Hills 0 – Cy Garcia netted a pair of goals, Makram Ishaq also scored, and Caleb Wolfe recorded the shutout as Keystone Oaks (4-2, 4-1) blanked Woodland Hills (3-3, 3-2) in Section 1-2A.

Moon 6, Ambridge 0 – Mike Walenchok scored four goals and Aedan Costa and Davi Jansson each buried a goal as Moon (5-1-1, 4-0-1) won the rematch of last year’s Class 3A WPIAL final over Ambridge (1-6-1, 1-3-1) in Section 2.

Mt. Pleasant 1, McGuffey 0 – Austin Ulery scored the decisive goal and Jacob McGuinness recorded the shutout to lead Mt. Pleasant (5-1, 5-0) to a Section 3-2A win over McGuffey (5-3, 3-2).

Neshannock 6, South SIde 3 – Sophomore Zayden Herb scored three goals to pace Neshannock (4-1-2, 2-1-1) in a Section 1-A defeat of South Side (0-5, 0-4). Austin Leatherman, RJ Ashcroft and Killian Turek scored for South Side.

Norwin 2, Baldwin 0 – Chase Molinaro and Owen Christopher scored to lead Norwin (6-1, 5-0) past Baldwin (1-6, 0-5) in Section 2-4A.

Penn-Trafford 2, Obama Academy 0 – Joe Ambrose and Jake Curran had a goal apiece to help Penn-Trafford (3-4-1, 2-2-1) top Obama Academy (1-5, 1-4) in Section 4-3A.

Peters Township 4, Mt. Lebanon 0 – Brett Martin had two goals and Nathan Froelich and Dante Pusateri also scored as Peters Township (4-2, 3-2) defeated Mt. Lebanon (2-4-1, 2-2-1) in Section 2-4A.

Plum 5, Gateway 0 – Tristin Ralph had a hat trick, Garrett Chandler and Fedgi Aristyl also scored, and Owen Zalewski recorded the shutout as Plum (6-1, 5-0) defeated Gateway (2-3-1, 2-2-1) in Section 4-3A.

Quaker Valley 10, Mohawk 0 – Kiril Grin scored a hat trick as Bennett Haas, Matteo Castellini and Cameron Diggins each added a goal for Quaker Valley (4-2, 4-0) in a Section 4-2A win against Mohawk (2-4, 2-3). Colin Benge, Nick Allan, Liam Miller and Isaac Williams all added a goal for the Quakers.

Ringgold 1, Trinity 0 – Juraj Stasko scored on an Aidan Weaver assist to lead Ringgold (7-0, 5-0) past Trinity (2-2, 2-2) in Section 3-3A.

Serra Catholic 2, Seton LaSalle 1 – Collin Holmes scored on a first-half penalty and Caden Buaer buried the game-winning goal off an assist from AJ Mejalli as Serra Catholic (5-1, 3-0) beat Seton LaSalle (3-1-1, 2-1) in Section 4-A.

Shady Side Academy 4, Knoch 2 – Amir Awais had a hat trick and Paul Benec also scored to help Shady Side Academy (3-1, 3-1) to a Section 2-2A win. Mason Nebel and Sam Caldwell scored and Kannon Trofimuk had two assists for Knoch (3-5, 3-2).

Thomas Jefferson 4, Albert Gallatin 0 – Owen Householder scored twice and Brayden Miller and Sean Shimko each added a goal while Cody O’Hare provided the shutout as Thomas Jefferson (5-1, 3-1) blanked Albert Gallatin (2-5, 1-4) in Section 3-3A.

Trinity Christian 4, Springdale 3 (OT) – Andy Beck scored the winning goal in overtime to lead Trinity Christian (3-1, 2-1) past first-place Springdale (4-1, 4-1) in Section 3-A. Billy Lawrence had a goal and an assist and Pat Wylly and Nate Dubas also scored for the Dynamos.

Upper St. Clair 3, Allderdice 1 – Joe Donnelly scored two goals and Jan Sames added another for Upper St. Clair (7-0, 5-0) in a Section 2-4A win. Jack Cohen converted a penalty for Allderdice (1-4, 1-3).

West Allegheny 10, Blackhawk 1 – Andy Cosnek scored a hat trick and Justin Manns and Jordan Styer added two goals apiece for West Allegheny (2-6, 2-4) in a Section 2-3A defeat of Blackhawk (0-6, 0-5).

Yough 5, Brownsville 1 – Isaac Pacacha and Noah Jurcevich collected two goals apiece and Collin Barner added a goal and two assists to power Yough (4-2-1, 3-2) past Brownsville (0-7, 0-5) in Section 3-2A.

Girls volleyball

Beaver 3, Riverside 0 – Chloe List had 11 kills, Kailyn Connelly had four blocks, Zoe Ringer handed out 19 assists and Aubrey Bumblis finished with 16 digs and six aces as Beaver defeated Riverside in Section 1-2A. Sophia Sharpless had eight digs and four aces for the Bobcats.

Canon-McMillan 3, Mt. Lebanon 0 – Natalie Carr had 20 kills and six aces to lead Canon-McMillan to a Section 2-4A win. Cali Dagen added 10 kills and Josie Carter recorded 20 assists and 11 digs for the Big Macs.

Central Valley 3, Hopewell 1 – Bella Flinchum had 14 kills and three blocks to lead Central Valley to a Section 4-2A win. Rowan Zilian added 11 digs and Kylie Godshall dished out 40 assists for the Warriors.

Derry 3, Burrell 0 – Haylee Myers had six kills and Emily Berkhimer followed with five kills as Derry swept Burrell in Section 5-2A. Regan Repak had four kills and 28 assists for the Trojans. Cassie Byers had three aces while Katie Dunlap added 10 digs.

Franklin Regional 3, Greensburg Salem 2 – Sophia Reitz had 12 kills, Maya Speranza added eight kills and Carson Burgh recorded eight aces to power Franklin Regional to a Section 5-3A win.

Hampton 3, Penn Hills 0 – Kassidy Thompson had four aces and 16 assists and Emmy Schrom had two aces and seven kills as Hampton swept Penn Hills in Section Section 1-3A. Lilly Muczinski had 15 assists for the Talbots.

Mapletown 3, Avella 0 – Bailey Rafferty had 19 assists, three kills and four aces and Devan Clark had 11 digs and seven aces to lead Mapletown to a Section 2-A win. Isabella Garnek had seven kills and Miranda Fox and Treslee Weston each added five kills for the Maples.

Mars 3, Ambridge 0 – Ella Nicortra had 10 kills, Lily Javor added six kills and Cecillia Christy finished with five kills as Mars swept Ambridge in Section 4-3A. Hailey Duker provided 21 assists for the Planets.

New Brighton 3, Sto-Rox 0 – Emma Ackerman had four kills and two digs to lead New Brighton to a Section 4-2A win. Ameera Walker had eight aces and Astrid Reyes added six assists.

Southmoreland 3, Waynesburg 0 – Kaylee Doppelheuer had nine kills and four blocks and Amarah McCutcheon added eight kills and four blocks to lead Southmoreland to a Section 3-2A win.
