High school roundup for Sept. 21, 2023: Springdale wins under the lights in Oakmont

Senior Billy Lawrence and junior John Duku scored first-half goals for Springdale, and the Dynamos added three more in the second half to defeat rival Riverview, 5-0, in Section 3-A boys soccer Thursday under the lights at Riverside Park in Oakmont.

Springdale (7-1, 6-1) won its third straight and completed a season sweep of the Raiders.

The Raiders (2-7, 1-6) hoped to pull off a homecoming upset, but Lawrence fed Duku with 16:35 left in the first half to give Springdale all the offense it needed. Lawrence then got a score of his own inside 10 minutes to play until the break.

Springdale made it 3-0 on a score from Matt Lawrence roughly 15 minutes into the second half, and Nate Dileo and Jackson Pribanic added goals to finish off the scoring. Noah Skaugan recorded the shutout.

Avonworth 7, Riverside 1 – Calder Mahan had two goals and two assists while Rowan Carmichael, Ben Hayes and Nate Kline each buried a goal for Avonworth (7-2-1, 6-1) in a Section 4-2A win over Riverside (1-7, 1-6).

Belle Vernon 4, Southmoreland 0 – Trevor Kovatch scored all four goals and Mason Yeschenko had a pair of assists to lead Belle Vernon (8-2, 7-1) past Southmoreland (3-7, 2-6) in Section 3-2A.

Bentworth 11, Ligonier Valley 0 – John Scott found the back of the net four times, Ryan Moessner recorded a hat trick, Caden Hakinson scored a pair and Ryan Colbert added one as Bentworth (9-1, 5-1) rolled to a Section 2-A win over Ligonier Valley (2-6, 0-6).

Beth-Center 1, Greensburg Central Catholic 0 – Nekoda Bundy scored the lone goal for Beth-Center (6-4, 3-3) in a shutout of Greensburg Central Catholic (3-5, 3-3) in Section 2-A.

Burrell 6, Valley 0 – Vincent Guerrini scored twice while Joey Discello, Haydn Herbulock, Luke Postupack and Billy Kowalkowski had a goal apiece to lead Burrell (7-1) over Valley (0-4) in nonsection play.

Butler 2, Pine-Richland 1 – Cody Lubinsky and Nick Kilgore each scored a goal to lift Butler (7-2-1, 5-2) past Pine-Richland (4-6, 3-5) in Section 1-4A.

Canon-McMillan 2, Peters Township 1 – Ryan Galicic’s second goal of the game was the overtime winner, giving Canon-McMillan (5-4-1, 5-2-1) a Section 2-4A win. Brett Martin scored for Peters Township (6-3, 5-3).

Carlynton 5, Carrick 2 – Jermy-Alexis Garcia-Criollo scored a pair of goals to lead Carlynton (6-3) to a nonsection win over Carrick.

Deer Lakes 3, Knoch 0 – Collin Rodgers, Peyton Kushon and Noah Shurina scored as Deer Lakes (8-1, 7-0) blanked Knoch (5-7, 5-3) in Section 2-2A. Kushon and Rodgers each had an assist for the Lancers.

Franklin Regional 2, Obama Academy 1 – Danny Christafano and Jovan Sankoorikal scored to lead Franklin Regional (7-3, 6-2) past Obama Academy (1-7-1, 1-6-1) in Section 4-3A.

Hampton 2, Mars 0 – Coleman Docherty and Luke Fiscus scored and Caden Muchenski had an assist as Hampton (8-1-1, 6-0-1) blanked Mars (6-3-1, 4-2-1) in Section 1-3A.

Latrobe 3, Penn-Trafford 2 – Cole Brunton scored the winning goal in the second half and Roman Agostoni and Cameron Mikulsky also scored for Latrobe (6-2, 5-2) in a Section 4-3A win. Ben Luchs had a pair of goals for Penn-Trafford (4-6-1, 3-4-1).

McGuffey 1, Waynesburg 0 – Nate Klerr scored in the 43rd minute to lift McGuffey (8-3, 6-2) over Waynesburg (2-8, 1-7) in Section 3-2A.

Montour 7, Ambridge 0 – Jaxon Camp and Dom Passaro each scored two goals and had an assist to pace Montour (7-2, 7-1) in a Section 2-3A win over Ambridge (1-10-1, 1-6-1).

Moon 8, Blackhawk 0 – Stephen Carvajal scored a hat trick, Aedan Costa buried a pair, and Evan Thomas, Davi Jansson and Josue Lara each added a goal for Moon (8-2-1, 7-0-1) in a Section 2-3A win against Blackhawk (1-9, 0-8).

Mt. Lebanon 7, Baldwin 0 – Ben Bowen and Victor Slack netted a pair of goals apiece to lead Mt. Lebanon (4-6-1, 4-3-1) past Baldwin (3-8, 1-7) in Section 2-4A.

Mt. Pleasant 2, Yough 1 – Mt. Pleasant (7-2, 7-1) scored a pair of second-half goals for a comeback win over Yough (6-4-1, 5-3) in Section 3-2A. Luke Domasky netted the tying goal and Jarett Garn scored the winner with less than five minutes to go. Collin Barner scored for the Cougars.

Norwin 5, Allderdice 1 – Owen Christopher had two goals and an assist and Daniel Maddock also scored twice to send Norwin (8-2, 7-1) to a Section 2-4A win. Carson Zadylak scored and George Bunovich had two assists for the Knights. Hari Arunachalam scored for Allderdice (1-7, 1-6).

Plum 6, McKeesport 0 – Jonathan Aristyl and Zach Mauro each had two goals and an assist to power Plum (9-1, 8-0) to a Section 4-3A win over McKeesport (0-9, 0-7). Tristin Ralph and Brady French also scored for the Mustangs.

Quaker Valley 2, Beaver 1 – Bennett Haas had a goal and an assist and Kiril Grin also scored for Quaker Valley (8-2, 7-0) in a Section 4-2A win. Kyle Carlsen scored for Beaver (4-3, 4-3).

Ringgold 2, Albert Gallatin 0 – Owen Haywood and Nick Evans scored a goal each to lead Ringgold (8-2, 6-2) to a shutout win over Albert Gallatin (2-8, 1-7) in Section 3-3A. Aidyn Whaley made two saves for the shutout.

Shady Side Academy 4, Freeport 1 – Hari Vishwanathan, Santiago Maiz, Campbell Tucker-Hill and Mitch David scored to lead Shady Side Academy (6-1, 6-1) past Freeport (3-6, 3-5) in Section 2-2A.

Trinity 1, Connellsville 0 – Tyler Johnson scored the decisive goal as Trinity (5-2, 5-2) beat Connellsville (5-6, 3-5) in Section 3-3A. Andy Palm assisted on the winning goal and Ryan Torboli made 10 saves to record the shutout.

Upper St. Clair 8, Hempfield 0 – Ben Murtough and Ryan Ranalli scored a pair of goals apiece while Josh Ioli and Tyler McClintock-Comeaux combined on the shutout for Upper St. Clair (9-1, 7-1) over Hempfield (0-9, 0-6) in Section 2-4A. Joe Donnelly, Greg Boughner, Andrew Chakos and Andrew Michalewsky each added a goal for the Panthers.

Winchester Thurston 7, Aquinas Academy 0 – Michael Miller scored four goals to lead Winchester Thurston (5-2-3, 4-2) to a Section 3-A win over Aquinas Academy (4-5, 2-5).

Girls soccer

Monessen 4, Albert Gallatin 3 – Samantha Saylor scored all four goals to power Monessen (3-5-1) to a nonsection win over Albert Gallatin (1-9).

Peters Township 11, Hempfield 0 – Cam Klein and Mandy Pirosko had hat tricks and Julia Spergel added a pair of goals to lead Peters Township (8-0-1, 6-0-1) to a Section 2-4A win over Hempfield (1-8, 0-7). Jordan Klein, Milena Gill and Fallan Malley also scored.

Plum 3, Penn-Trafford 0 – Rayla Smith, Gianna Revetta and Olivia Bigger each scored as Plum (6-0-1, 6-0) shut out Penn-Trafford (6-3, 3-3) in Section 3-3A.

Field hockey

Fox Chapel 3, Latrobe 0 – Molly Ben scored twice and Annalise Bartolacci added a goal while Gina Fitzsimmons and Mackenzie Ben combined on the shutout for Fox Chapel in a Section 2A win over Latrobe.

Penn-Trafford 5, Upper St. Clair 0 – Caeley Simon scored two goals and Ava Hershberger, Mack Keenan and Emma Chamberlain slapped in a goal apiece as Penn-Trafford shut out Upper St. Clair in Section 2A.

Pine-Richland 11, Allderdice 0 – Jessica Albertson had a hat trick and added an assist and Anna Merlack collected two goals and two assists for Pine-Richland in a Section 3A win.

Boys golf

Section 6-3A – Colton Lusk fired a 5-under 67 at Nemacolin CC to take medalist honors and lead four Peters Township players hitting the target score of 81 at the section qualifier to reach the WPIAL Class 3A tournament. Bethel Park’s Chan Yoon shot a 73 to finish second.

Girls golf

Section 1-2A – Greensburg Central Catholic’s Kennedy Kelly took medalist honors with a 90 and teammate Alayna Stawovy finished one stroke back at 91 at the section qualifier at Ligonier Country Club. They were the only players in the field to advance to the WPIAL tournament.

Girls volleyball

Albert Gallatin 3, Elizabeth Forward 0 – Jocelyn Ellsworth had two digs, six assists and three aces, Ashley Metts had 10 digs and Mia Myers had three digs, six assists, four aces, five kills and a block for Albert Gallatin in a sweep of Elizabeth Forward in Section 3-3A.

Beaver 3, Laurel 0 – Chloe List had nine kills and 11 digs, Kailyn Connelly added a career-high 13 kills and Zoe Ringer had 32 assists as Beaver swept Laurel in a Section 1-2A match. Aubrey Bumblis had 12 digs and Jaedyn Brown had nine kills for the Bobcats. Dakota Weldon had five kills and two blocks for the Spartans.

Burrell 3, Deer Lakes 1 – Pyper Ferres had 11 kills, Gia Hornack added 20 digs, and Bella Greenwald served five aces to lead Burrell to a Section 5-2A victory.

Canon-McMillan 3, Upper St. Clair 1 – Natalie Carr had 18 kills and 11 digs and Cali Dagen recorded 12 kills to lead Canon-McMillan to a Section 2-4A win. Olivia Gross handed out 23 assists and Julia Murdy had 17 digs.

Central Valley 3, Freedom 0 – Mia Dinello had six kills, Selah Glumac added six digs and Rowan Zilian served six aces as Central Valley won in Section 4-2A.

Derry 3, Apollo-Ridge 0 – Emily Berkhimer had eight kills, Katie Dunlap had 10 digs and Alayna Williams had four aces for Derry in a sweep of Apollo-Ridge in Section 5-2A.

Hempfield 3, Fox Chapel 0 – Ashley Hosni had nine kills and Lauren Howard added eight, while Zoey Hopkins had 18 assists and Preslee Horchak produced 14 for Hempfield in a sweep of Fox Chapel in Section 3-4A. Sarah Podkul had 18 digs for the Spartans.

Indiana 3, Greensburg Salem 0 – Paige Fisanich had nine kills, Hannah Cowburn dished out 20 assists, and Alex Ball had nine digs to lead Indiana to a Section 5-3A win. Stella Stossel recorded six kills, four digs and two aces.

Southmoreland 3, McGuffey 0 – Riley Puckey had 11 assists and five digs. Kaylee Doppelhuer had 10 kills and Taylor Doppelhuer had 11 kills and three blocks as Southmoreland swept McGuffey in Section 3-2A to stay undefeated at 9-0. Amarah McCutcheon had seven kills and three blocks for the Scotties.

St. Joseph 3, Springdale 0 – Veronica McCarthy had seven kills, Jillian Bloch led the team with 13 service points, and Kate Giannetta added 10 service points as St. Joseph defeated Springdale in Section 4-A.
