High school roundup for Sept. 3, 2019: Toohey’s hat trick leads Mt. Pleasant soccer

Lucas Toohey had a hat trick to lead Mt. Pleasant to a 6-1 victory over Leechburg in a Section 2-AA boys soccer matchup Tuesday.

Ryan Temple scored twice and Arthur Bartlow had three assists for Mt. Pleasant (1-0, 1-0). Nate Kubasky also scored. Jake Mull scored the lone goal for Leechburg (1-1, 0-1).

Freeport 1, Burrell 0 – Hunter Hardin scored at the midway point of the first half off an assist from Justin Kriess, and the score held up as Freeport won its Section 2-2A opener.

“I don’t think we played our best,” Yellowjackets head coach Dave Teorsky said. “But it’s still so early in the season. We’re going to improve, and everyone else in the section will, too. It’s a good win, especially against a quality section rival.”

The goal was Hardin’s second of the season. Freeport improved to 2-0, while Burrell fell to 1-2. A battle within the battle saw the goalkeepers — Burrell’s Dom Ferra and Freeport’s Luke Heider — makes saves to keep the game close.

Heider finished with 10 saves, and Ferra recorded seven stops.

Plum 3, Latrobe 0 – Darius Flowers scored twice and Luke Kolankowski also scored to help Plum to a Section 3-AAAA win.

Norwin 6, Penn Hills 0 – The Knights scored three times in each half to open Section 3-AAAA play with a victory.

Highlands 2, North Hills 2 (OT) – Gabe Norris scored on a penalty kick and assisted on a score from Matt Cekada as the Golden Rams (1-1-1, 0-0-1) rallied from a two-goal deficit to tie the Indians (0-0-1, 0-0-1) in the Section 1-AAA opener for both teams. Gabe Anthony made nine saves in net for Highlands.

Mars 4, Kiski Area 1 – Evan Long scored for Kiski Area (0-2, 0-1) in a Section 1-AAA loss to Mars (2-1. 1-0). Zack Jordan assisted on Long’s goal. Austin Rocke scored twice, and Seth Grady and Aedan Skirtich also scored for the Fightin’ Planets.

Belle Vernon 2, Ringgold 1 – Daniel Sassack scored the winning goal with 14 minutes left in the game to lead Belle Vernon (3-0, 1-0) to a Section 3-AAA win. Tyler Kovatch also scored.

Bishop Canevin 8, Monessen 2 – Jack Staley scored three goals to lift Bishop Canevin (2-1, 1-0) to a Section 4-A win over Monessen (0-3, 0-1).

Canon MacMillan 3, Bethel Park 0 – Tommy Samosky, Nino Civitate and Owen Makar scored to lead Canon MacMillan in Section 2-AAAA.

Seneca Valley 2, Central Catholic 1 – Zach LaVelle and Justin Stupar scored to help Seneca Valley to a Section 1-AAAA win.

Elizabeth Forward 9, South Allegheny 2 – Donovan Wycsek scored three goals as Elizabeth Forward (1-0, 1-0) won a Section 1-AA game.

Butler 3, Shaler 1 – Emery Douthett, Ian Llewellyn and Luca Fusca scored to help Butler to a Section 1-AAAA win.

Girls soccer

Yough 11, Charleroi 0 – Justin Appolonia recorded a hat trick to lead Yough to a nonsection victory. Sara Krofchek and Marin Sleith combined on a shutout.

Plum 2, Gateway 1 – Emily Kirkpatrick and Hannah Odom each scored first-half goals for the Mustangs (2-0) as they rallied for a nonsection victory against former section rival Gateway (0-1). Erica Taylor and Kelly Kvortek split time in net to earn the victory for Plum.

Girls tennis

Penn-Trafford 3, Kiski Area 1 – The No. 1 doubles team of Holly Monroe and Marissa Setzenfand recorded a tie-breaking, three-set victory to lead Penn-Trafford to a Section 1-AAA win. Monroe and Setzenfand took the third set by a 6-0 score. Ruby Chen and Sarah Yamrick won singles matches for Penn-Trafford.

Norwin 3, Franklin Regional 2 – Trinity Miller and Jenna Beach won at singles and Isha Vyas and Jordan Napierkowski recorded a doubles win to help Norwin to a Section 1-AAA win.

Mt. Pleasant 5, California 0 – Mary Smithnosky and Sophia Smithnosky won singles matches in straight sets to lead Mt. Pleasant to a Section 1-AA win.

Boys golf

Franklin Regional 196, Penn Hills 227 – Chuck Tragesser shot a 33 to lead Franklin Regional to a Section 4-AAA win.

Southmoreland 183, Valley 304 – Clay Sipple and Ben Zimmerman shot 40 to share medalist honors in a nonsection win for Southmoreland. North Allegheny 197, Penn-Trafford 203 – Adam Yamrick was medalist with a 35 in a nonsection loss for Penn-Trafford.

Hempfield 191, Belle Vernon 222 – Nik Suchko, Alex Podlucky, and Lucas Anderson shot 37 to lead Hempfield in a nonsection victory.

Ligonier Valley 213, Blairsville 257 – Gunnar Elliott, Jon Rankin and Ryan Jones shot 42 to help Ligonier Valley improve to 6-0 in Heritage Conference play and 7-0 overall.

Girls golf

Greensburg Central Catholic 173, Southmoreland 253 – Ella Zambruno shot 37 to lead the way for the Centurions.

Penn-Trafford 177, Franklin Regional 197 – Lauren Barber shot a 39 to claim medalist honors for Penn-Trafford.

Girls volleyball

Derry 3, Deer Lakes 2 – The homestanding Trojans (1-0, 1-0) scored a 15-8 victory in the deciding fifth set to claim the Section 5-AA opener over the Lancers (0-1, 0-1). Deer Lakes took the first set, 25-20, before giving up the second and third set, both by 25-20 counts. The Lancers rallied with a 25-20 win in the fourth set.

Burrell 3, East Allegheny 0 – Hannah Koziarski had eight assists and Avery Bane added five aces to help Burrell (1-0, 1-0) earn a Section 5-AA win at East Allegheny.

Springdale 3, Trinity Christian 1 – After splitting the first two sets, Springdale (1-0, 1-0) won the next two to secure a Section 4-A victory over Trinity Christian. The Dynamos won the first set 25-17, dropped the second 25-21 and then took the third 25-15 and the fourth 25-18.

Knoch 3, Blackhawk 0 – Kenzie Kerkan had 18 service points and 18 digs to help Knoch (1-0, 1-0) score a Section 4-AAA win at Blackhawk. Kennedy Christy added 13 digs and 13 service points.
