It was a string of incredible highs and lows for the Blackhawk Cougars softball team this season. The high point was a five game winning streak including wins over Beaver and Ambridge.
The lows, two losses each to Hopewell and New Castle that contributed mightily to the end of the Cougars season and today’s one sided home loss to the section champion Bridgers 16-5 in 6 innings.
Blackhawk (7-7) trailed 2-0 after a half inning. The Cougars got a run back on Abby Riggio’s single in the bottom of the inning. Ambridge plated two more runs in the third and Blackhawk rallied again as Haley Holsinger singled home a run to cut the score to 4-2.
Ambridge put up five runs in the fourth with the big blow coming with Haley Holman’s blast over the left field batting cage for a 9-2 advantage and an end to Blackhawk’s playoff dreams.
The Bridgers plated seven run in the sixth, the Cougars answered with three on a Bree Dickton run scoring double to center and a Riggio two run single.
With the win, the Bridgers (9-2) clinch the section title prior to a home game tomorrow with New Castle. The win also gives Hopewell a playoff spot since they own a tiebreaker over Blackhawk. Brooklyn Kotula was the winning pitcher.
Despite the loss, the Cougars were upbeat after the game. Riggio said it was so fun to play for her father Jim, who is the first year head coach. They all said that they will focus on the positives this season and set the foundation for the next senior class. Dickton took the loss. Blackhawk closes section play tomorrow at Beaver.
