The Elizabeth Forward Warriors celebrated their senior recognition day with an impressive victory, 8-0, against West Mifflin at William Penn Field on Tuesday. In their final home contest of the season, the Warriors plated a pair of runs in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings, and also received a complete-game shutout from pitcher Lauren Mathews. As a result, Elizabeth Forward concludes its Class 4-A Section 2 slate with a record of 7-5 (8-10 overall), while the Titans season comes to an end with a mark of 2-10 (6-12 overall).
Although West Mifflin, coming off of a 17-2 victory against Carrick, threatened to score in the top of the first, Mathews worked out of trouble, stranding a pair of runners to keep the Titans off the board.
In the bottom half of the stanza, EF wasted little time scoring, as freshman Jordan Pinneri led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice, and scored on a double by senior Jessica Cartia. Taylor Ludwick later plated Cartia on a groundout, giving the home squad a 2-0 edge.
In the third, Cartia came through again, as she blasted a two-run homer over the center field fence, scoring Cassidy Kern to make it 4-0.
The Warriors added two more runs in the fourth frame, as Lexi Argyros and Mathews opened the inning with consecutive singles. Pinneri brought home Argyros with a single to center, and a sacrifice fly by Kern plated Allie Berkley, who was running in place of Mathews.
Elizabeth Forward capped the scoring in the fifth inning, as Taylor Ludwick singled and later scored on a double steal, while Mathews doubled to bring in senior Maddie Porter.
The run support was more than enough for Mathews, who surrendered just five hits, and did not allow a runner past first base after the second inning. Offensively, the Warriors were paced by the senior duo of Cartia, who had three RBIs, and Mathews, who had three hits.
In the setback, West Mifflin received a strong effort by freshman Jaden Arcuri, who had a pair of hits, as well as Kira Kieler, who picked up the team’s only extra-base hit, a double. Anne Modrick took the loss in the circle, allowing 11 hits.
While the season is over for the Titans, the Warriors await their seeding for the Class 4A playoffs.
