Kiski Area, Burrell earn top seeds for WPIAL wrestling tournament

The WPIAL wrestling committee on Thursday awarded Kiski Area (Class AAA) and Burrell (Class AA) the No. 1 seeds for the upcoming team tournament, which begins Monday with Class AAA preliminary-round matches.

Kiski Area (11-0), ranked third in the state in the Trib HSSN rankings, has won the past two WPIAL titles and will be seeking a fifth title. The Cavaliers won their 24 ^th section title Wednesday, rallying to defeat Hempfield, 40-24.

The Spartans (12-2) were awarded the third seed behind Seneca Valley (10-2). Canon-McMillan (7-2) is the fourth seed. The top four seeds will host first-round matches Wednesday.

Action begins with four preliminary-round matches Monday at Canon-McMillan. The two matches at 6 p.m. feature South Fayette against Indiana, and Hampton facing Chartiers Valley. The 7:15 matches are Franklin Regional against Peters Township and Trinity meeting West Mifflin.

Burrell (7-2) claimed its 16 ^th consecutive section title by defeating Derry. The Bucs have won 14 WPIAL team titles, including the past 12.

Burgettstown (7-0) was seeded second, with Quaker Valley (12-5) third, Beth-Center (10-4) fourth and Derry (10-4) fifth. The top four seeds will host first-round matches on Wednesday.

The semifinals and finals are scheduled for Feb, 2. Class AAA will be at Norwin beginning at 4 p.m. with the semifinals and finals at 6. The Class AA semifinals and finals are at Chartiers-Houston beginning at noon. The finals are slated for 2 p.m.
