Despite a slow start, the Spartans finished strong in the lower weights and rolled over No. 4 Greensburg Salem, 42-21, in a Class AAA, Section 1B match.
Hempfield (6-0, 1-0) got four pins in the lightweights and finished by winning eight of the last nine matches. Greensburg Salem (0-1, 0-1) got its lone win during that run by forfeit.
Hempfield now leads the Crosstown Cup series 11-8.
As Hempfield coach Vince DeAugustine was addressing his team after that match, he told them how proud he was that they never panicked.
“We still have some things to work on,” DeAugustine said. “Wins by Dallyn (Wood) and Dillon (Ferretti) were key wins for us. Those matches could have gone either way and then we got rolling.”
Greensburg Salem had taken a 6-0 early after Ian Ewing (152 pounds) and Joe Williams (160) picked up close wins, but Wood stopped the momentum by using a second-period reversal to edge Luke Ewing at 170.
A pin by Jesse Quatse (182) and a close win by John Meyers (195) pushed the Greensburg Salem lead to 15-3, but that's where Greensburg Salem's momentum stopped.
Ferretti got a reversal in overtime to stun Will Gongaware, 3-1, at 220, and freshman Isaiah Vance, the grandson of former Hempfield grad and state champion Mike Kirkling, earned a 1-0 win against Greensburg Salem sophomore Trent Patrick.
“Most heavyweights get pinned,” Greensburg Salem coach Randy Parsley said. “He's pretty athletic and rolled through it.
“Coming in I thought we were the better team. We didn't wrestle that way. Hempfield was tougher than we were. They came ready to wrestle and we didn't.”
Hempfield still trailed 15-9 heading to the lightweights. Ethan Berginc (106) started the pin run by decking Cody Kaufman at 106, and Kyle Burkholder kept it going at 113 by pinning Nico Williams to make it 21-15 Hempfield.
Greensburg Salem tied the match at 21 with a forfeit at 120, but first-period pins by Tyler Williams (126) and Jarred Brean (132) gave Hempfield a 33-21 lead with freshman Ty Linsenbigler (138) and Luke Kemerer (145) left.
Linsenbigler handled Dajauhn Hertzog, 9-1, and Kemerer won by a technical fall against Tyler Hughes.
“It was huge winning the cup back,” Kemerer said. “We hadn't won it since my freshman season. I wanted to go out on top. It's a great rivalry and it feels pretty good.”
DeAugustine was pleased how the team battled the entire match.
“We didn't give up any bonus points with the best part of their lineup,” DeAugustine said. “If we were able to withstand that we'd be OK.”
