Six Norwin wrestlers earned a spot in the WPIAL Class AAA championship field this weekend after finishing in the top five at the Section 1 tournament last Saturday at Kiski Area.

The group is led by sophomore Kurtis Phipps, who won the 106-pound section title.

Phipps defeated Franklin Regional's Carter Dibert, 7-2, in the championship bout to improve to 32-0 this season.

After a first-round bye, Phipps pinned Hempfield's Ethan Berginc in one minute, 37 seconds in the semifinals.

Phipps won the WPIAL title as a freshman last season and finished seventh in the state.

Frankie Gill (120 pounds) and AJ Detore (182) each finished third at the section tournament.

Jason Miller (138) and Bryce Long (152) took fourth place, and John Altieri (126) placed fifth.

The WPIAL Class AAA championships will be held Friday and Saturday at Canon-McMillan.
