As the stretch run in WPIAL softball heats up, the turn of the calendar to May included a key softball matchup at Peterswood Park Tuesday between two teams battling for one of the two remaining playoff spots in Section 1-6A.

Peters Township earned a season split with Upper St. Clair by defeating the visiting Panthers, 12-4.

The Indians (8-7, 6-4) jumped all over Upper St. Clair (4-11, 3-7) from the get go, as they scored three first-inning runs. After two singles and a walk loaded the bases, senior shortstop Haley Cecere cleared the bases with a double, giving Peters Township a 3-0 lead.

The Panthers scored in the top of the second after a throw got away from Peters Township first baseman Alex Bondi.

In the home second, Peters continued to add on, scoring three runs, capped off by a two-run single by Bondi.

Second baseman Jill Yeates launched a three-run home run in the third to push the Peters Township lead to 9-0. Cecere then singled home her fourth RBI of the day to make it 10-0, before Victoria Boehme plated two with a base hit.

Upper St. Clair scored one in the fourth and two in the fifth on a two-run single by Alex Wunderlich.

Peters Township is one win away from a return to the playoffs after missing the postseason last year, and will play at Baldwin on Thursday.

The Panthers will need some help and need to win out, and will take on Bethel Park at home Thursday.
