PIAA softball playoffs roundup: Albert Gallatin wins program’s 1st state playoff game

Maddy Hershberger threw a two-hitter with eight strikeouts to help WPIAL third-place finisher Albert Gallatin capture the first state tournament win in program history with a 10-0 victory over DuBois in a PIAA Class 5A first-round game at DuBois City Park.
Annalia Paoli had two triples and two RBIs, and Ally Bezjak added two RBIs for the Colonials (14-4), who will play WPIAL champion West Allegheny in the quarterfinals Thursday.
Lindsey Robinson and Hannah Turtzer each had two hits in the win.
Thomas Jefferson 5, Twin Valley 1 — Haleigh Karcher was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and Lily Rockwell also knocked in two runs as WPIAL runner-up Thomas Jefferson (14-6) won a PIAA Class 5A first-round game at Lyons Park. Winning pitcher Bella Bucy and Paige Truax added doubles.
Class 6A
Baldwin 9, Mifflin County 6 — At Penn State, Carly Santillo was 3 for 4 with two doubles and five RBIs to guide WPIAL third-place finisher Baldwin (13-5) to a PIAA Class 6A first-round win. Cassie Carlson and Allison Murray also had RBIs for the Highlanders, who will play Hempfield in the quarterfinals.
Class 4A
Punxsutawney 8, Elizabeth Forward 0 — Holly Hartman had five RBIs, including a three-run home run, as District 9 champ Punxsutawney beat WPIAL runner-up Elizabeth Forward (19-5) in a PIAA Class 4A first-round game at DuBois City Park.
Class 3A
Hickory 9, Avonworth 3 — Lily Tedesco had a two-run single for Avonworth (14-8), but the WPIAL third-place finishers fell to District 10 champ Hickory in a PIAA Class 3A first-round game at Allegheny College.
South Park 17, Karns City 3 — Kaitlyn Pavlick, Charlyn Blackburn, Julie Shinavski and Taylor Glowa all had three hits to help WPIAL runner-up South Park (17-2) to a PIAA Class 3A first-round win at DuBois City Park. Winning pitcher Jess Dean was 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs. Pavlick and Chelsea Carozzo each had three RBIs. The Eagles will play District 6 champion Philipsburg-Osceola in the quarterfinals.
Class 2A
Cochranton 5, Laurel 1 — At North Allegheny, District 10 runner-up Cochranton defeated WPIAL champion Laurel (13-4) in a PIAA Class 2A first-round contest.
Mohawk 10, Cranberry 5 — WPIAL fourth-place finisher Mohawk (16-2) won the first state playoff game in program history by defeating District 9 champion Cranberry in a PIAA Class 2A first-round game at Clarion-Limestone.
Mt. Union 9, Frazier 6 — Kayla Matway was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs for WPIAL runner-up Frazier (16-7), which dropped a PIAA Class 2A first-round game at Penn State.
Lauren Mastowski, Emi Curcio and Megan Celaschi also had RBIs for the Commodores. Logan Hartman took the loss.
Saegertown 4, Chartiers-Houston 1 — Ella Brookman homered for WPIAL third-place finisher Chartiers-Houston (16-4), but the Bucs dropped a PIAA Class 2A first-round game to District 10 champion Saegertown at Penn State Behrend.
Class A
Union 10, Elk County Catholic 0 — Sarah Seamans homered, tripled and had two RBIs, and Skylar Fisher was 3 for 4 with three RBIs as WPIAL third-place finisher Union (18-3) won a PIAA Class A first-round game at Brockway. Seamans threw a four-hitter with 14 strikeouts to earn the win. Union will play Monessen in the quarterfinals.
