WPIAL Alum Q&A – Evan Bonnaure

Playing a high-school sport with a parent as the head coach can be both beneficial and challenging for an athlete. Evan Bonnaure excelled for the basketball team that his father, Rich, coached at South Fayette, and now he's one of the top performers for La Roche's team, too. Bonnaure is this week's feature for the WPIAL Alum Q&A. As a junior with the Lions, Bonnaure averaged in double figures in scoring, netting just more than 10 points per contest. Meanwhile, his team compiled a record of 16-7, including a 10-2 in section play. The Lions made the Class AAA playoffs, but fell by three points to Beaver Area in the first round.

WPIAL Coaches Corner – Ron Moncrief
In this new feature titled “Coach’s Corner”, I will be interviewing a different coach every week and asking them questions about their personal life and about coaching. Hopefully their answers will not only shed some light on how they coach their respective teams, but also allow readers to get to know the men behind the fields/courts. This week features Vincentian Academy girls basketball coach Ronald Moncrief. Coach Moncrief has coached the Royals for 11 seasons, including this year. Scholastic Notebook – 01/13/2017

Over the next five days, WPIAL boys basketball has three of the top games of the entire season and all three are on MSA Sports.  While the teams make the matchups big, the players involved make the contests bigger than big. The big games are Friday and Tuesday. They are: Pine-Richland (No. 1 in the MSA 6A rankings) at North Hills (No. 3) Friday night at 7:30. Chartiers Valley (No. 1 in 5A) at Mars (No. 3)  Friday night at 7:30. Latrobe (No. 2 in 6A) at Penn Hills (No. 4) Tuesday night at 7:30.

WPIAL Alum Q&A – Tristan Buxton
January 9, 2017
Although Tristan Buxton was a talented grappler at Trinity High School, he perhaps did not establish himself as one of the elite competitors in the district. Now wrestling at the college level at Waynesburg, Buxton has developed into one of the best on the mat. As a result, he's in the spotlight for this week's installment of the WPIAL Alum Q&A. Buxton was a three-time letterwinner for the Hillers, beginning as a sophomore in 2011-12. He competed in the 113-pound weight class in sectionals, but did not place. The following season, Buxton dropped to 106, and compiled an overall mark of 27-10. In the Class AAA Section 4 tournament, he finished third. That allowed him to advance to the Southwest Regional, in which he went 1-2.

2017 WPIAL Competitive Spirit Championship Results
January 7, 2017
Three champions were crowned at the 2017 WPIAL Competitive Spirit Championship on Saturday, as Bishop Canevin in Class A, Elizabeth Forward in AA, and Shaler in AAA took home gold. Hopewell and North Allegheny, both of which claimed first last year, finished as runners-up in AA and AAA, respectively, this year, while there was no runner up in A, as Bishop Canevin was the only squad to compete. In it's fifth year, the event continued to grow in prominence, as the spacious gymnasium at Hempfield Area High School was packed to the brim with spectators and nearly 30 teams.

Scholastic Notebook – 01/06/2017

Look at the progression of the Laurel High School boys basketball program the past few years, and it is quite evident that the Spartans are now all Locked in. Ken Locke is in his fifth season as the Spartans’ coach. The program without much history has made giant strides the past few years. Now this year, the Spartans are doing things never seen before at the school. In the latest MSA Sports WPIAL rankings that came out at the beginning of the week, Laurel was No. 3 in Class 2A. But that was before Laurel knocked off No. 1 Sewickley Academy this past Tuesday. Laurel heads into Friday night’s big game against Our Lady of the Sacred Heart with a perfect 9-0 record. The Spartans are one of only four teams in the WPIAL with a perfect record.

WPIAL Alum Q&A – Brenna Wise
January 2, 2017
To call Brenna Wise one of the best female athletes of this generation in the WPIAL would not be hyperbole. In her four years at Vincentian Academy, Wise propelled the Royals to four WPIAL championships on the hardwood, and two state titles. She was also a two-time PIAA player of the year recipient. Wise's performance has carried over to the college ranks with the Pitt Panthers, as she's one of the best players not only on her team, but in the conference.
