South Side Rams Hometown Volleyball Broadcast Recap – 09/20/2016

The Lady Rams of South Side started off strong in their big Class 2A Section 2 matchup, but lost to visiting Quaker Valley 3-1 (15-25, 25-17, 25-19, 28-26). Everything was clicking early for coach Jason Benkowski's squad in the first game, as South Side quickly jumped to an 8-0 lead. The Lady Rams used some crisp passing and capitalized on Quaker Valley miscues in that opening frame to get the early advantage. The tides quickly changed in the second game, as the good ball movement that led to a game one victory for South Side vanished. Unforced hitting errors plagued the Lady Rams, and allowed for Quaker Valley to get back into the match.
Freeport Yellow Jackets Hometown Volleyball Broadcast Recap – 09/20/2016
Although the performance was far from perfect, the Freeport Yellow Jackets maintained their perfect record on the campaign with a straight-sets triumph against the Derry Area Trojans. Freeport prevailed against its section adversary 25-21, 25-18, 25-20. As a result, the defending champions improved to 5-0 in Class 2A Section 5, while the Trojans dropped to 2-2. It was the Trojans who controlled the play in the early stages of the first set, however, as Derry scored the first three points, and led as late as 14-13. From that point forward, though, the Yellow Jackets found another gear, and outscored the Trojans 9-5 to close out the opening set.
Chartiers-Houston Buccaneers Hometown Volleyball Broadcast Recap
With the re-classification of girl’s volleyball for the 2016 season, the Chartiers Houston Buccaneers find themselves in a section with both Fort Cherry and defending WPIAL Champion and PIAA Champion Bishop Canevin, on top of losing its best player, Kylee Levers to the Pitt Panthers’ volleyball squad, and two other key pieces from last year’s section champion squad. Going into play Tuesday, Sept. 20, the Lady Bucs were 3-1 in section 3 of 1A and set for a battle with the previously 2-2 Brentwood Spartans. In each section contest this season for the Lady Bucs, the final of the match has been in straight sets and Tuesday evening was no different, only it resulted in Chartiers-Houston (3-2) falling by scores of 25-17, 25-17 and 25-21 to Brentwood (3-2).
Bishop Canevin Crusaders Hometown Volleyball Broadcast Recap
Behind an early run and tremendous serving, Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic defeated Bishop Canevin 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 28-26) in a non-section tilt on Monday night at Bishop Canevin High School. The Trojanettes racked up 15 aces in the match, as five different players had at least three service winners.Sarah Parey set the tempo for CWNC with four first set aces and two of her team-high six kills in the match. Parey was responsible for the early separation between the two squads, as the Trojanettes started the match on a 10-0 run behind Parey's serves. The countdown to district links championship action began Monday with sectionals to help determine the individual fields for both the Class 3-A and Class 2-A finals. WPIAL Alum Q&A – Ryan Sproule
At Central Catholic High School, Ryan Sproule may be best remembered for his contributions to the Vikings in capturing the 2015 WPIAL baseball championship, the first in team history. It was on the pitch, though, that Sproule continued his athletic career Washington University in St. Louis. Just a sophomore in college, Sproule already is one of the top performers on his team. We officially welcome the 2016 Autumn season with another busy week of fall high school sports here on the MSA Sports Network. It's sort of like digging out your telescope from the deep, dark crevices of your upstairs closet, dusting it off, setting it up and then...nothing but clouds. But wait, off in the distance is that one shining star. That was the case Saturday of Week Three with only one high school football game on the WPIAL gridiron slate. here is out brief salute to our Saturday Scholastic Standout. The band Three Dog Night once sang "One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do," from their hit song simply titled One. That summed up the Saturday high school football schedule for the WPIAL in Week Three. With 60 contests played in the district Friday, that left only a Class 1-A Big 7 Conference tilt as the only game in town. You can hear the archived broadcast here on The Network. Every Friday night, there are hard decisions to make to whittle down many of the great performances from around the WPIAL into our Top Ten HighLights package. But this Friday night was probably the toughest since it was the busiest night game wise of the entire 2016 season. Of the possible 61 WPIAL football games, 60 were played on 9/16, thus the difficult becomes even more so. Here's what we came up with on a pleasant evening weather wise for the Week Three HighLights. Fewer than 20 runners in WPIAL history have rushed for 5,000 yards in their career. But no one on the 5,000-yard list runs the football quite like Clairton’s Lamont Wade. He averages a first down every time he touches the ball. Wade went over 5,000 yards last week against Springdale. He now has 5,062 yards on 460 attempts. Before you go to your calculator, that’s 11.0 yards a carry. That’s phenomenal when you consider that is the highest yards-per-carry average of anyone who has gained 5,000 yards. The next best is Beth-Center’s Anthony Welsh, who finished his career a year ago with a 10.4 average. In two games so far this year, Wade is above his career average. He has 351 yards on 16 carries. In what has been a trying start to the 2016 campaign, the Moon Lady Tigers have been staying positive. That patience and positivity showed again for coach Sarah Durham's squad on Thursday night, even in dropping a 4A-Section 2 matchup to Mt. Lebanon in straight sets (25-20, 25-17, 25-13). With the advent of Week Zero here in the 2016 high school football season, there will be ten weeks of regular season football before we open up the Highway to Heinz and the WPIAL Playoffs. In those ten weeks, none were a busier Friday night than the one here in Week 3. All but two district teams were in action, making for a busy WPIAL football slate with 60 gridiron contests.
