Mars And Quaker Valley To Meet Again For Class A Penguins Cup Title

It's a rematch for the Class A Penguins Cup championship next Wednesday at Consol Energy Center as the defending champion Quaker Valley Quakers and Mars Planets both punched their tickets on Monday night.Mars defeated Westmont Hilltop 4-1 in the opening game and Quaker Valley won by the same 4-1 score over Kittanning in the nightcap. PIAA Class AAA Individual Wrestling Championship Results and Recaps

After two days of the AAA PIAA tournament, the WPIAL was on fire. They had 23 wrestlers in the semi-finals and 31 of 42 wrestlers guaranteed to bring home a medal from Hershey.The semi-finals Saturday morning did not go as well compared to the first two days of action, with only 10 of 23 WPIAL wrestlers advancing to the finals. But the WPIAL did set themselves up for an impressive night.Of the 10 wrestlers in the finals, six would be wrestling head to head at 120, 126, and 195. At 120 pounds, sophomore Sam Krivus of Hempfield beat junior Dalton Macri of Canon McMillan 3-1 in a match that did not take place at Norwin last week. It was the first PIAA Championship for Krivus, who finished 3rd last year as a freshman.

Day 1 of the PIAA tournament could not have went better for the AAA WPIAL wrestlers, with 38 of 42 wrestlers staying alive. The success continued into Day 2, with 31 of 42 wrestlers continuing their wrestling season and guaranteeing themselves a spot on the medal stand Saturday night.

2013 PIAA Individual Wrestling Championships Recap – Day One
The PIAA tournament kicked off in Hershey on Thursday, which is the start of the bracket cutting down from 16 wrestlers to the top 8 medalists in each weight class. Thursday marked 4 wrestlers being eliminated at each weight class and the good news is the WPIAL did not get the memo.The WPIAL had a strong showing on Thursday, with 28 of its 42 wrestlers advancing into the quarterfinals while another 10 wrestlers stayed alive in the consolations. That means out of the 42 AAA WPIAL wrestlers, only four guys were eliminated (one wrestler each at 106, 138, 160, and 285).

New Castle, Montour, Beaver Falls & Vincentian Win 2013 WPIAL Boys Hoops Titles

Four teams with recent championship experiences got another sweet taste of gold in this seasons district playoffs. Top-seeds New Castle in Class AAAA and Beaver Falls in Class AA won championships for a second straight year. The Red Hurricane made history by becoming the first boys teams to win back-to-back titles in different classifications and with undefeated records each year. Plus #2-seed Vincentian Academy won the Class A title for the second time in three years while #3-seed Montour also celebrated their second crown in three seasons. Bethel Park, South Park, Bishop Canevin & Vincentian Queens of WPIAL Court
A #1 seed, a #2-seed and a pair of #3-seeds walked away from the district postseason wearing the gold. Vincentian Academy was the only top seed to prevail as the Royals won a second straight WPIAL championship. A team that settled for silver in 2012 won gold here in 2013 as South Park captured the Class AAA crown. Meanwhile, a pair of teams captured their first ever girls basketball gold as Bethel Park won in all in Class AAAA and Bishop Canevin stunned Seton-LaSalle to win the Class AA title. Canon-McMillan Dominates WPIAL Class AAA Wrestling Championships
Canon-McMillan continued its unforgettable season Saturday evening at Norwin High School as the Big Macs earned the team point championship, captured three individual gold medals, and advanced a total of seven wrestlers to next weekend’s state championship tournament in Hershey. The Big Macs have already shown they’re the top dual meet squad in the state and now appear poised to back it up, as Canon-McMillan will be the prohibitive favorite to be crowned the top team once again at the state individual tournament.In all, 42 wrestlers punched their tickets to Chocolate Town at the 78th annual WPIAL Class AAA Individual Wrestling Championships. The tournament also doubles as the PIAA Class AAA Southwest Regional state qualifier.

New Castle Masters Perfection as Canes Beat Hampton Again for WPIAL AAAA Gold

The third meeting of the year between New Castle and Hampton turned out to be like the first two. In fact, it turned out a lot like the previous 25 games for the defending Triple-A champs turned Quad-A beasts. The Red Hurricane rocked the Talbots with a big second quarter and rolled to a 68-53 victory Saturday night before a raucous crowd at Duqnuesne Univeristy's A.J. Palumbo Center.Things were quiet for the first two minutes of the game.  Scoreless, even.  Then, a Brandon Dominick three opened up the flood gates for New Castle.  Ryan Luther answered for Hampton, scoring his team’s first five points.  The Red Hurricane slowed things down to close out the quarter, and led 19-15 and the end of one.
