The 2012 WPIAL Field Hockey Playoffs went the distance and beyond before determining two champions as both title matches were settled in overtime Wednesday night at North Allegheny High School. Defending Class AAA champion Penn-Trafford was knocked off its throne by Fox Chapel as the Foxes won their first AAA crown and their second field hockey championship and first since 1997. Meanwhile, Shady Side Academy was able to edge Sewickley Academy in OT as the Indians repeat as AA champs. The title is the 12th in SSA history. With the impact of Hurricane sandy hitting the Northeast United States, weather has become a major topic of discussion. OK, let's clear the air on what the WPIAL Football steering committee will do on Monday. They will NOT rank the teams, they will seed them. Big Difference. They attempt to determine the top 2, then the top 4 and then the top 8 teams in each classification.However in football, sometimes their hands are tied based on home field advantage for the top 8 seeds. For example, you could make the argument that Neshannock is the fourth best team in Class A. But you can't seed the Lancers in the top eight because they are on the road with an 8-1 record after tie-breaker points and head-to-head gave the top two spots in the Class A Big 7 Conference to Sto-Rox and Rochester.So sometimes the committee has to be creative. One team was playing for playoff positioning and a chance to finish as high as third place instead of sixth place while the other was home for one final game playing for pride and bragging rights against an arch-rival. That was the setup for the final Saturday of the 2012 WPIAL football regular season and the lightest day of the season with only two games on the docket. Peters Township continued their dominance over the rest of the state in Girls AAA Team Tennis. On Saturday, the Indians captured their second consecutive PIAA AAA championship by blanking Unionville 3-0.The victory gives Peters Township their fourth state crown in the past seven years and marked the seventh straight year that a WPIAL team captured gold in the PIAA Class AAA Girls Team Tennis Championship.The Indians beat Erie McDowell 5-0 in Round One, eliminated Harriton 4-1 in the Quarterfinals on Friday in Hershey, then knocked out Conestoga in the Semifinals on Saturday morning before the winning the championship at the Hershey Racquet Club.2012 WPIAL and Pittsburgh City League Standings & Playoff Clinchings

And then there were two. What was the quietest Saturday of the WPIAL regular season actually doubled because of a water main break on Friday. One game helped determine the final playoff order in the Class AAA Big Nine Conference while the other was a battle for Beaver County pride. All the 64 playoff spots have been secured with the order in all 14 conferences now determined and finalized. Saying “it’s time to move on,” Chartiers Valley’s Chris Saluga will coached his final game with the Colts Friday night. Saluga has decided to resign as Chartiers Valley’s football coach, effective after Friday night’s game against West Allegheny. Saluga already has handed in his letter of resignation to the school board. “I don’t know how to say it, other than it’s just time for me to move on,” Saluga said. “I’ve done all I can here.”
