While the Pittsburgh City League has already reached it's short two-week postseason, the regular season was still the focus for one final Friday in 2012 for the WPIAL. It may have felt like early September outside, but make no mistake about it, it was do or die time for many teams fighting for a conference championships, a home playoff game and a playoff berth. Central Valley Girls Win PIAA AA Team Golf Championship
Thanks in part to Macky Fouse's 77 on Wednesday, the Central Valley girls golf team captured the PIAA Class AA team championship at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York. The Warriors become only the second WPIAL girls team to win a state golf championship, following the Shady Side Academy Indians, who won state crowns in 2008, 2009 and 2011. The season begins to wind down as teams start trying to stay alive in the race for the NEC, PSAC and PAC titles as the Stretch Run moves to the college ranks. California and Waynesburg try and hold on to the top spot, while Duquesne looks to stay in the race.And the big question is, can Lock Haven end a 50 game losing streak. Close, but no golden cigar for WPIAL boys and girls golfers at the 2012 PIAA Individual Golf Championships Monday and Tuesday at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort and Conference Center in York. Tommy Nettles of Peters Township finished in 2nd place in Boys AAA while Matt Barto of Leechburg was 2nd in Boys AA. Lauren Walker of Canon-McMillan was 3rd in Girls AAA while Macky Fouse of Central Valley was 3rd in Girls AA.Here are all of the results from the two day event. While there will be no playoff clinchings in the five games set for the Eighth Saturday of the 2012 season, that doesn't mean the slate was filled with meaningless games. Shady Side Academy tuned up with a win before next weeks win-and-your-in game at Kittanning in Week 9, however Avonworth was stunned on the road with a loss heading into their big showdown with rival Northgate next Friday. Stretch Run high school football action continued with another busy Friday in Southwestern Pennsylvania. There are 64 cars that will head out and ride in two weeks on the Highway to Heinz. So far through seven weeks, more than half (34) of those vehicles have clinched their ticket to ride. Many more joined them tonight on the Eighth Friday of the high school football season. The Peters Township girls tennis team made it back-to-back championships Thursday afternoon while Sewickley Academy was unable to win a second straight golden crown Friday as they fell to Quaker Valley.. The title is the second straight for Peters Township, their third crown in four years and fourth golden racquet in school history. The Quakers championship is their second in three years and sixth overall.
