Peters & Sewickley Duo’s Win 2012 WPIAL Girls Doubles Tennis Gold Again

Sarah Komer of Peters Township and Sewickley Academy have done it again. A year after Komer won the AAA crown with Stephanie Smith, she has now captured gold with a new teammate in Abby Cummings. The two beat the top-seed duo of Nicole Cyterski and Megan Watson of Oakland Catholic Friday afternoon at North Allegheny High School in the Class AAA title match. Speaking of repeat golden performances, two different Sewickley Academy Panthers won the AA championship as top-seed Amy Cheng and Jappman Monga outlasted Chelsea Carter and Sara Kaminsky of South Park. Scholastic Notebook – 10/05/2012
One and four. When those three words are uttered about a football team after five weeks, it usually indicates bad things. But for Blackhawk and Chartiers-Houston records are indeed deceiving. Blackhawk and Chartiers-Houston are two teams that are usually much more than respectable. You could say both have fallen on hard times this season as both are 1-4. But are there many 1-4 teams as good as Blackhawk and Char-Houston? Blackhawk and Char-Houston are the hard-luck stories of the WPIAL this season. A few points here and there, take away a turnover here and there, and their seasons could be vastly different. Want proof? Three of Blackhawk’s losses are by a total of five points. Char-Houston’s four losses are by a total of 17 points.

Police Investigating Death of W & J Football Player Thursday
Police in Washington are investigating the death of a Washington & Jefferson College football player early Thursday morning.21-year Tim McNerney was taken to the Washington Hospital emergency room, where he was pronounced dead at 4:42 am. McNerney was found at the corner of College and Maiden Streets.Washington Police Chief Robert Lemonds said police are treating the death as suspicious, more information will be released after an autopsy was performed. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the death is being treated as a homicide.

Pgh Central Catholic’s Brent Rodgers Bags WPIAL Boys AAA Golf Title
October 3, 2012
On a perfect day for scoring the WPIAL Boys Golf AAA finalists did just that at Fox Chapel Golf Club in the championship tournament. 14 players shot 77 or better on the par 70 course off Fox Chapel road, led by WPIAL champion Brent Rodgers. Rodgers, a junior from Pittsburgh Central Catholic carded an even par 70 to take home the gold medal.

Numpho-Frank and Alexander Are Golf’s Golden Girls, Win WPIAL Championships

In what were some tough conditions Monday at 3 Lakes Golf Course, the WPIAL held the Class AAA and AA Girls Golf Championship. Play was delayed by 90 minutes at the start due to heavy fog, the fairways were still damp from the weekend rain, but the greens dried out and were lighting fast.In the Class AAA championships, Janista Numpho-Frank of Hempfield claimed her first gold medal with a four-over par 76. The senior survived a challenge from sophomore Lauren Waller of Canon-McMillan down the stretch. Numpho-Frank shot even par over the front nine, but struggled slightly on the back side, shooting a 40. Waller fired two under 34 on the back nine, she finished two shots back at 78. Senior Lizzie Hammell was four shots off the lead at 80 and finished third.

District College Football Recap for Saturday, September 29th

A busy week in district college football as the PSAC took a break from divisional games for crossover action, the PAC saw some wild finishes and Saint Francis and Duquesne met for the 99th time in the NEC.Here are recaps of all the games played Saturday:Kutztown 56 - Slippery Rock 49 SRU lost it's 2nd straight game, fumbling 5 times, which led to 28 Kutztown points and a victory for the Golden Bears at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium on Saturday night. QB Nigel Barksdale made his first career start and figured in on 5 Rock touchdowns in the loss. Kevin Morton returned to the Kutztown lineup and threw 4 touchdown passes, the Golden Bears led 42-21 at the half.

WPIAL Week Five Saturday’s Scholastic Starz
The only bad thing about a jam-packed Friday night of high school football is that it leaves the Saturday district schedule a tad light. That was the case in Week Five with only THREE WPIAL football games, all on the Class A level.
