Welcome to Week 1 of the 2010 high school football season. The summer zoomed by for Chick's Picks, as she made her travels around the WPIAL--partaking in everything from autograph sessions for her fans, to scouting two-a-days with her trusty crystal ball.

CTK 2010 – PITTSBURGH CITY LEAGUE Preview

Over the past five seasons, four different teams have won Pittsburgh City League championships (Brashear won twice). Look for the balance of power to continue this season. It doesn't seem like there is a prohibitive favorite to win the City League this year. Schenley captured the title a year ago.

It's the final week of September and the local college football slate is strong once again. Conference play opens up in the Northeast and Missouri Valley, divisional play begins in the PSAC, and in the PAC, a matchup of the conference powers over the last two seasons. WPIAL President Passes Away at 63

Western Pennsylvania high school sports fans lost a true ambassador Sunday when WPIAL President and Uniontown High School athletic director Richard Constantine lost his battle with cancer and passed away at the age of 63. Here is his obituary from the Uniontown Herald Standard:

CTK 2010 – WPIAL A BIG SEVEN Conference Preview

Two of the four playoff teams from the WPIAL Class A Big Seven Conference in 2009 are no longer in the conference, with Monaca ending their program and Laurel moving up to the Class AA Midwestern Conference. The conference will be wide open for playoff spots, but one thing remains the same, Rochester is always a favorite to head to the playoffs and Heinz Field.

2010 WPIAL Schedules: Boys Cross-Country

Can you say Five-Peat? That is what the Tigers of North Allegheny accomplished last fall in winning their fifth straight WPIAL AAA Boys Cross Country Championship. The Tigers finished with 92 points followed by Baldwin with 109 then North Hills with 158 then Plum with 196. In the Class AAA individual competition, North Allegheny's Ryan Gil placed first with a 15:30.

Let's first get something straight about geography. Section 1 of WPIAL Class A is known as the Eastern Conference. It used to be a fitting name because most of the teams in the conference were from the Eastern area. But the conference has changed a great deal over the years.

Over the last 35 years, the WPIAL Class A football scene has been dominated by two conferences, the Big 7 and the Eastern Conference. From 1975 through 2006, the districts champion came from one of those two conferences. However the tide has turned over the last three years as the Black Hills Conference has laid the claim to being home of the WPIAL Class A champs.

Allegheny Conference teams won't have to "get real" so fast this season. Over the past two seasons, the Allegheny has consisted of 10 teams, which meant all teams started playing conference games the first night of the season. There were no non-conference games. Everything was real from the get-go.

The Midwestern Conference has a new look for 2010, gone is long time member and defending tri-champion Center. Taking the place of the Trojans is Class A Semifinalist Laurel. Will things stay the same with Aliquippa and Beaver Falls battling for the conference title or will another team step up to challenge the two remaining powers?

There is no truth to the rumor that the section formally known as the Big Seven Conference in Class AAA was considering a name change to the Big One Conference. Instead, they will change to reflect the number of TOTAL teams in the conference to the Big Eight.

Last year, there were few surprises when it came to the WPIAL girls volleyball playoffs. All three top-seeds earned four victories in the 2009 WPIAL Girls Volleyball Playoffs, climaxing with WPIAL championships.
