Freshman Anthony Smith’s first NCAA Division I scholarship offer has come in.
Some might say it is a surprise it took this long.
The Southmoreland quarterback grabbed an offer from Syracuse on Saturday while visiting the university.
“It feels great,” Smith said. “It has been something I have been dreaming of since I started playing football. ’Cuse has been one of the schools I have been in touch with frequently over the past year or so.”
Smith anticipated an offer last summer, but schools wanted game film of the 6-foot-1, 190-pound passer, listed recently by QBHitList.com as the No. 40 best pro-style quarterback in the national Class of 2028.
He gave them plenty to watch.
Smith threw for 2,110 yards and 22 touchdowns, becoming just the second freshman in WPIAL history to throw for 2,000 yards, joining Western Beaver’s Jaivin Peel (2,434).
Smith completed 129 of 244 attempts and led the Scotties to their fourth straight playoff appearance. He came back from a concussion in the final regular-season game to play in the first round.
He threw for 296 yards and four touchdowns against Derry, 295 and three scores against Laurel Highlands and 284 and three TDs when the Scotties played Mt. Pleasant.
