Hempfield and Beaver Repeat as WPIAL Girls Track & Field Champs

The Hempfield Spartans continued their historic run on Monday in the 2016 WPIAL Girls Team Track & Field Class AAA Championships at Baldwin High School. The Spartans captured another Triple-A title as they join North Allegheny by winning a record tying fifth straight district crown. The Tigers mark was set from 2000 to 2004. The Spartans beat Butler, Mount Lebanon and Seneca Valley on a cool, gray day that turned golden again for Hempfield In Class AA, the Beaver Bobcats became the fifth team in the last eleven years to repeat. The Bobcats won in a bloated six team championship field that included Shenango, South park, Freeport, Greensburg Central Catholic and Burrell.WPIAL Hall of Fame Class of 2016

A current NBA player, a former Parade All-American girls basketball player, two dominant teams and four highly successful coaches highlight the WPIAL Hall of Fame class of 2016. This is the 10th class for the WPIAL Hall of Fame, and selections were announced Wednesday at a news conference at the Heinz History Center. Inductees will be honored at a banquet at the Green Tree Doubletree June 10. A Hall of Fame committee selects inductees in five categories: athlete, coach, team, contest official and contributor. The history of the PIHL postseason is that the favorites usually prevail. Up until last year, the playoffs would re-seed, making it tough for surprise teams to go deep. this year under the bracket format, none of the three eventual Penguins Cup champions were favored at the start of the playoffs. Sure, Beaver was the top-seed in the Division II Playoffs and went on to win gold, but Erie Cathedral Prep was a #3-seed in AAA, Bishop Canevin was a #4-seed in AA and Franklin Regional was a #7-seed in A. Big Burst Helps Beaver Down Carrick to Win PIHL Division 2 Title

Things went according to plan for Carrick (15-7-1) through the first half of the 2016 PIHL Division 2 Championship at UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry on Monday night. But then Beaver (21-2-0) exploded for three goals in a span of 1:17 late in the second period and rolled from there to a 5-2 victory and its first gold medal since 2001 as a member of Class AA.

It was like a WPIAL block party at the 2015 PIAA Girls Team Tennis Championships at the Hershey Racquet Club as five District 7 teams reached the Semifinals and three of them played in the state finals on Saturday. While Shady Side Academy in AAA and Beaver in AA lost in the championship match and brought home silver from Chocolatetown, North Allegheny claimed gold. As they did in the WPIAL AAA title match, the Tigers beat the SSA Indians to win a third straight girls tennis state crown. WOW! There was a lot of offense on the final Friday of the regular season. Some were great tune-ups for the upcoming high school football postseason. Other were wrapping up the season and going out with a blaze of glory. If you want to see variety, check out Paris this fall. But we’re not talking the city of Paris. We’re talking the junior do-it-all player for the Seton-LaSalle football team named Paris Ford. He is a Ford that is souped up with versatility. He is undoubtedly one of the most versatile – and best – players in the WPIAL. Ford is listed as a receiver and defensive back. He is a stud at both positions. But he also runs the football and returns kicks and punts. How versatile is he? What a night for high school football in District 7. The skies were clear and the temps above average for late October, some teams clinched conference titles while others earned home field advantage in Round One and others still earned the right to participate in the upcoming postseason. Plus it turned out to be a record setting night for one junior running back. All this and the real fireworks don't begin for another two weeks. North Allegheny knocked off top-seed Shady Side Academy Wednesday to win the WPIAL Class AAA title. The championship is the third straight crown for the Tigers and denied the Indians their fifth girls team tennis title. For the first time since 2002 and the sixth time in program history, Beaver captured the WPIAL Class AA Girls Team Championship Wednesday afternoon at North Allegheny High School, defeating Sewickley Academy 3-2. Even though the Bobcats were swept in doubles play, a sweep in three singles matches was enough to win the championship. Beaver was led by juniors Anne Taylor and Moriah Bridges, who won a first and second singles, respectively. Freshman Devyn Campbell sealed the team victory with a win at third singles in straight sets.
