Ellis School Three-Peats in WPIAL 1-A Field Hockey

For the third straight year, the Ellis School Tigers and the Shady Side Academy Indians met in the 1A WPIAL Field Hockey Championships. And for the third straight years the Tigers came away with the gold medal, besting the Indians 3-1 at North Allegheny High School. After a scoreless first half, things broke open in a 4:31 span of the second half with all four goals being scored.  The Tigers got the game’s first goal when Angie Scheurmann took a feed from sophomore forward Leah Ewers and beat Shady Side goalkeeper Clara McCormick from the left wing inside the circle at (12:09) to put Ellis up 1-0. The goal for Scheurmann, who scored the only goal in last season’s title game, was the 22nd goal of the year for the junior forward.

2016 WPIAL FIELD HOCKEY PLAYOFFS Results

They were both defending champions in the district, they were both the #2-seeds in their respective classification and on Tuesday, they are both title winners AGAIN. Fox Chapel won a second straight 3-A crown and the Foxes third title in five years with a win over top-seed Pine-Richland while The Ellis School captured a third straight WPIAL championship and seventh title since 2002. 2015-2016 MSA SPORTS GIRLS BASKETBALL ALL-NETTERS

The Girls All Netters all-star squad this season is certainly a sizeable one. While guards often dominate all-star teams, the first team of the All Netters has four players at least 5-11, including three who are 6-1 or taller and one who is 6-4. The team is picked by the MSA Sports staff from all WPIAL teams. Three of the first-team members won WPIAL championships. Ellis School Upsets Shady Side to Repeat in WPIAL AA Field Hockey

In a WPIAL title game rematch, the Ellis School Tigers won their second straight Class AA crown with a 1-0 triumph over the Shady Side Academy Indians.  The game was very similar to last year’s title tilt and again came down to a second half goal by Ellis School as the deciding factor.  The Tigers had the advantage in penalty corners, 9-3, and had three consecutive corner opportunities to end the first half. Ellis was unable to capitalize on their corner tries before halftime and the game remained scoreless deep into the second half.

2015 WPIAL GIRLS FIELD HOCKEY RESULTS

One of the shortest team tournaments in the WPIAL turned out to be a golden two rounds of success for the two #2-seeds. Both Fox Chapel in Class AAA and The Ellis School in Class AA upset the top seeds North Allegheny and Shady Side Academy in the district championship matches to win field hockey crowns. The title is the second for the Foxes in school history and first since 2012. Meanwhile the Tigers enjoy their sixth WPIAL field hockey championship and second straight golden stick. A Tigers Tale: North Allegheny and Ellis Win WPIAL Field Hockey Gold

The Class AA top-seeded Ellis School Tigers won their first WPIAL crown since 2010 with a 1-0 victory over the defending Class AA champion Shady Side Academy Indians at Newman Stadium at North Allegheny High School on Tuesday night. Ellis School claimed its fifth overall title thanks in large part to the play of senior midfielder Mackenzie Haney who scored the only goal of the night with 4:25 remaining in the first half.  Haney was a force offensively in the opening half, and turned her attention toward protecting the lead in the second half as the Tigers rarely permitted the Indians a good look inside the circle.
