Scholastic Notebook – 09/23/2016
September 23, 2016
At Mapletown, Rush rushes. A lot. Dylan Rush is a junior running back at Mapletown who has enjoyed a big season so far. He is the second-leading rusher in the WPIAL with 1,027 yards. The only running back who is ahead of him is Armstrong’s Zane Dudek, who has 1,201. Rush stands only 5 feet 9 and weighs 180 pounds. You have to wonder how strong Rush’s back is, because he is carrying the Mapletown team on it. Rush’s number of carries isn’t on the high side. It’s on the ridiculous side. In four games, Rush has carried the ball 147 times. That’s 36.8 times a game. The rest of Mapletown’s team has 31 carries. On top of that, Mapletown has thrown 22 passes – and Rush has attempted seven of them.

Chicks Picks for Week Two
September 8, 2016
Welcome to Week 2 of the high school football season. Chick’s Picks has been fortunate enough to make a lot of friends throughout her prognosticating career – some that are unforgettable, and others that she cares to forget.  One of Chick’s Picks’ favorites happens to be a very dear Twitter pal, who happens to be the better half of a local coach.  This Twitter pal in particular has stood by Chick’s Picks through good times and bad – weeks when the crystal ball was on fire, as well as weeks when early retirement was considered.  Earlier this season, during Week Zero, Chick’s Picks’ pal even came through with her own prediction when the crystal ball was in the shop for maintenance.

WPIAL Alum Q&A – Frannie Crouse
September 5, 2016
Very few high-school athletes are able to capture a WPIAL Championship. Even fewer are fortunate enough to win a PIAA Championship. Winning an NCAA National Championship, though, is incredibly rare. Frannie Crouse, a soccer standout former at Greensburg Central Catholic and currently at Penn State University, has accomplished all three feats. As a result, she is the first student-athlete profiled for the 2016-17 edition of the WPIAL Alum Q&A. Crouse had a legendary career with the Centurions, as she set records and established herself as one of the best performers in recent memory. To that point, she held the all-time state record for goals when she graduated. She also was named an All-State performer as both a junior and a senior.

CTK ’16: 1-A Eastern Conference Preview
August 28, 2016
Most of the time, the Clairton Bears have a perfect view from the top of the Eastern Conference. Will anyone get in the way of that view this year? Clairton has won the Eastern Conference championship outright nine of the past 10 years. Every time, the Bears finished with a perfect record. Over the past decade, the only time Clairton didn’t finish perfect in conference play was 2013, when the Bears tied for first with Monessen and Fort Cherry. Just about everybody picks Clairton as the No. 1 team in WPIAL Class 1A this season. But Jeannette seems primed to give the Bears a challenge.

Big Inning Helps Serra Catholic Unseat GCC for WPIAL Class A Gold
June 1, 2016
The third time this season was the charm for the Serra Catholic Eagles (22-2). 2016 WPIAL Baseball Championship Previews
May 30, 2016
For 75 percent of the teams in the WPIAL baseball championships, foes are familiar. Three of the four championships match teams that have already played once this season. Greensburg Central Catholic vs. Serra, and Neshannock vs. Riverside are title games between teams from the same section. Plum played Norwin in a non-section game. The Class AAA championship – Blackhawk vs. Chartiers Valley – is the only game where teams have not played before. All of the championship games will be played Tuesday and Wednesday at Consol Energy Park, home of the Washington Wild Things and heard here on the MSA Sports Network. Here is a breakdown of the four championships: WPIAL CLASS AAAA:

Defense Wins Girls AA Championship for Bishop Canevin
February 26, 2016
A couple of late regular season losses knock the team down to second place and a section title and top-seed also vanish. But as the #4-seed, the team gets hot and runs through the playoffs en-route to a WPIAL championship. Bishop Canevin fans are all too familiar with the above scenario as first the Crusaders girls volleyball team this fall, then the girls basketball team have followed the exact same path. Friday, the basketball team captured a second Class AA girls title in four years with a dominating 53-33 victory over the 14th-seed Greensburg Central Catholic Centurions at the Petersen Events Center. Bishop Canevin used a stifling defense to jump out to an 11-0 lead through a pair of Greensburg Central Catholic early time outs.
