North Allegheny and Washington Win Gold in the 2013 WPIAL Boys Team Track & Field Finals

An old-new champion was crowned in Class AAA Thursday at Baldwin High School in the boys team track finals. It is the 9th WPIAL team championship for North Allegheny, but only the Tigers first in five years. NA knocked out two-time defending champion Hempfield en route to the gold. In Class AA, Washington won its second straight district title, the 4th AA team track championship overall for the Little Prexies. Hempfield and South Fayette are the Golden Girls of WPIAL Team Track & Field in 2013

Hempfield won their first WPIAL girls team track championship in 1984 and waited 27 years for their second crown. The wait for a third district title was a bit shorter...12 month to be exact as the Spartans won gold for a second consecutive season Thursday at Baldwin High School. Meanwhile, South Fayette captured the schools first ever girls team track gold by edging Beaver, Southmoreland and two-time defending champion Freeport. Another great year is in the books for the 2012-2013 high school wrestling season. The WPIAL provided a lot of excitement throughout the year, but it was Canon-McMillan in Class AAA and Burrell in AA that continued to rewrite history. Canon-McMillan not only won its record fourth consecutive WPIAL Class AAA team championship, but the Big Macs also won their second straight PIAA dual meet team championship and third straight PIAA individual tournament team championship. Burrell, meanwhile, continued its dominance of Class AA, with a record seventh straight WPIAL dual meet team championship.

Championship Saturday: City League & SWCAC Hoops and State Rifle

While there was plenty to focus in on Saturday including the WPIAL Class AA Wrestling Championships, the WPIAL Class AAA Wrestling Sectionals, the WPIAL Class AAA Diving Championships and the WPIAL Basketball Quarterfinals, there were other titles decided on the final weekend in February. Hempfield Jr Abbie Bache Guns Down WPIAL Rifle Title

Two days after leading Hempfield to the WPIAL Team Rifle championship, Spartans junior Abbie Bache captured gold in the Individual Finals Thursday afternoon at the Dormont/Mount Lebanon Sportsmens Club in Canonsburg. Bache becomes the second Spartans shooter in a two to win individual rifle gold after former teammate Nicole Metz won it in 2012.Bache shot a 200-19X with eight center shots to win the title. Trinity's Kayla Huffman beat out McGuffey's Courtney Stiles in a tiebreaker for the silver medal. Both shot a 200-19x with five center shots.

Hempfield Captures 2013 WPIAL Team Rifle Title

For only the second time in school history, the Hempfield Spartans are the master marksmen as they won the 2013 WPIAL Team Rifle championship Tuesday afternoon at the Dormont/Mount Lebanon Sportsmens Club in Canonsburg.Hempfield, which also won the title in 2010, finished with a score of 800-66x to edge out defending champion Woodland Hills which finished with a score of 800-57x. Section 3 winner Hempfield came into the championships ranked third behind #1 and Section 2 champion Woodland Hills and #2 and Section 1 champion McGuffey.Finishing behind the Spartans and Wolverines to round out the top six:3)  McGuffey Highlanders (798-64x)4)  Avella Eagles (797-62x)5)  Trinity Hillers (797-59x)6)  Plum Mustangs (796-56x)
