MSA Sports 2017 All-Icers

With the Penguins Cup and Pennsylvania Cup championships concluded, it's nearly time to put a bow on the 2016-17 PIHL campaign. The final piece of business, though, is unveiling the highly-anticipated MSA Sports All-Icers teams. As voted on by the MSA Sports Network staff, six players, regardless of position, were named to the first team, while six more were voted to the second team. Three of the four championship squads were represented, and both Plum and Franklin Regional featured a pair of standouts. Here's a look at the very best the PIHL had to offer in 2016-17. Franklin Regional Repeats as PIHL Pens Cup 1-A Champs

For nearly the first 14 minutes of the PIHL Class A title game between Franklin Regional and Indiana, it seemed as if the goaltenders on each respective side would be perfect, seemingly feeding off the raucous atmosphere inside the UPMC Sports Lemieux Sports Complex. However, that changed 13:50 into the first period, when Oldrich Virag netted his first of two goals as the Panthers beat the Little Indians 6-1 for their second straight PIHL Penguins Cup Class 1-A championship. The Virag opening tally came off a feed from Justin Gismondi and Nick Carretta, all three of which had multiple point games.

PIHL Penguins Cup Playoff Recaps for Monday, March 13th

The competitive nature of these 2017 PIHL high school hockey playoffs continued into Round Three on Monday as both Penguins Cup Class 1-A Semifinals games went down to the wire at the RMU Sports Complex on Neville Island. Defending champion needed a frantic comeback late in the third period to return to the title game while Indiana needed overtime to clinch their second title game trip in the last three years. Nord & James of Fox Chapel and Heckert & McLaughlin of Indiana Win WPIAL Tennis Doubles Crowns

Last year, Amanda Nord and Laurel Shymansky of Fox Chapel beat Tina Li and Ashley Huang of North Allegheny to win the WPIAL Class AAA girls doubles tennis title. This year, Nord and new partner Charlotte James did it again, as they beat the top-seed duo of Li and Huang to win the 2016 WPIAL Girls Doubles Tennis Class 3-A crowns on Friday. In 2-A, Kelsey Heckert and Katie McLaughlin beat Indiana teammates Margaux Marcus and Lauren Bertig to claim 2-A gold. CTK ’16: 4-A Northwest Nine Conference Preview

With the coming of six classifications, some conferences were merged into others. Gone is the Parkway Conference, one of the toughest in the nation. Also gone is the Greater Allegheny, known for some REALLY long bus trips over a 5 county area. Now we have the Northwest Nine, a combination of the two above mentioned with a little Century Conference thrown in. Let’s preview the new conference, which is sure to be exciting for fans over the next 2 years. AMBRIDGE BRIDGERS The Bridgers finished 5-5 last season and made the playoffs for the first time since 2005 out of the Parkway Conference. Ambridge won their last 3 conference games to make the Highway to Heinz. That was the good news.

CTK ’16: New WPIAL Football Coaches

New Faces - New Places - New Hopes - New Dreams. While there were two fewer coaching changes this off-season then before the 2015 campaign, there were a couple of big names that hung up the whistle after last fall. Legendary McKeesport coach George Smith retired for a second time while record setting coach Tom Nola exited at Gateway. There are a lot of rookie head coaches getting their first crack, and some coaches who are just changing hats and addresses. Whatever the case, there are 17 coaching changes coming into this 2016 season. Here are the new football coaches that will be running the sidelines in the WPIAL this fall. WPIAL Alum Q&A – Luigi Lista-Brinza
December 7, 2015
Nine days ago, the Central Catholic Vikings captured their fifth WPIAL football championship, defeating Penn-Trafford at Heinz Field in the Class Quad-A Championship. Prior to that, the last time Central Catholic captured gold was 2013, when running back Luigi Lista-Brinza paced the offense. That season, Lista-Brinza totaled more than 1,600 yards on the ground. As a result, he was named to the first team All-Conference, and second-team All-State.
