September 28, 2017
Welcome to Week 5 of the high school football season.  This week brought several straight days of unseasonably warm temperatures.  Wondering where these temperatures were during the summer, Chick’s Picks did her best to keep cool.  A few days into the heatwave, however, was concerned that delirium was setting in.  So, she tried her best […]

WPIAL Friday Night Highlights – Week One 2017
September 2, 2017
The calendar may have said September 1st, but it felt more like October weather wise. On opening night of the regular season, there are usually major concerns of heat exhaustion and muscle cramps on high school football sidelines, but there was a chill in the air on the first night of conference play. No matter […]

CTK ’17 – 1-A Tri-County South Conference Preview
August 25, 2017
The Tri-County South Conference has been much maligned over the years for its lack of success in winning WPIAL playoff games. But the Tri-County South this year features a running back with more than 4,000 career yards rushing and a 6-foot-4 quarterback who had nearly 2,000 yards offense last season. Suffice it to say there […]

Coaches Corner – Billy Simms
July 5, 2017
In this feature titled "Coaches Corner", I will be interviewing a different coach every week and asking them questions about their personal life and about coaching. Hopefully their answers will not only shed some light on how they coach their respective teams, but also allow readers to get to know the men behind the fields/courts. This week features head softball coach Bill Simms of the West Greene Pioneers. Coach Simms finished his 12th year with WG, and has helped turn the program into a perennial playoff contender. In 2016, he led his team to 4 straight blowout wins, earning them the Pioneers first ever WPIAL softball title. Coach Simms is also the Athletic Director, as well as a teacher at West Greene. Let's take a look inside Coach Simms's corner:

2017 Diamond Dolls Softball All-Stars
June 24, 2017
Morgan Ryan finished off a great career as a Hempfield pitcher this season. Bailey Parshall still has one year left as a pitcher at Belle Vernon, but already has had a great career. The two were so good this season - and in their careers - that the MSA Sports staff found it impossible to pick one over the other as Player of the Year. So there is a double take on Player of the Year this year. Ryan and Parshall have been selected co-Players of the Year and lead the MSA Diamond Dolls softball all-star team. The Diamond Dolls are the top 12 players in the WPIAL, regardless of position, and they are picked by the MSA staff. Here are thumbnail sketches of the players of the year and the rest of the Diamond Dolls team.

Scholastic Notebook – 06/02/2017
June 2, 2017
It doesn't matter whether it's McKenna or Madison. These Lampes have lit up opposing pitchers. McKenna and Madison Lampe are twin sisters and sophomores on the West Greene softball team. You might have a hard time coming up with any WPIAL softball sisters over the years that have made such a big impact on offense at the same time. The Lampes helped West Greene win a second consecutive WPIAL softball title on Thursday. The school had never won a championship in another sport. Mckenna Lampe was 2 for 3 in the title game and is now batting a whopping .662. A center fielder, McKenna's most amazing statistic might be the 44 bases she has stolen this season. Meanwhile, Madison Lampe, a sophomore third baseman, is batting .597. She has stolen 21 bases.
