The hottest topic in high school football in the WPIAL and around the state this season has been the six classifications. The addition of two classes has moved many teams to new classifications in the WPIAL. Everyone has to get used to how many A’s are next to teams. The same goes with the City League. City League teams have different classifications now also. Although all six are in one league, they can go to the postseason in different classifications. The largest school in the City is Allderdice and it is a Class 6A team. Brashear is in 5A. Carrick and University Prep are both Class 4A while Perry is 3A. Obama and Westinghouse are 2A. So, there are six teams in five different classes. Here is a look at the City teams:

The City League is still surviving with six teams, but it could go down to five as early as next season. The City League is made up of Allderdice, Brashear, Carrick, Perry, Westinghouse and University Prep (a combination of students from University Prep, Science & Technology and Obama). This is the fourth year that the league has had only six teams, after Langley and Oliver closed. But Westinghouse has petitioned the WPIAL to join the league in 2016. That would leave the City League with only five teams. But it is questionable whether the WPIAL will take Westinghouse. The WPIAL has said it will wait until the PIAA releases classification breakdowns in December before it decides whether to accept Westinghouse.CTK ’14: Pittsburgh City League Preview

The Pittsburgh City League once again is a six pack. This is the third consecutive year that the City League will have only six teams. The closing of some schools has shrunk the league drastically in the past few years. Oliver and Langley closed after the 2011-12 school year. Only 10 years ago, the City League had nine teams. The City League almost dropped to five teams this season. Westinghouse had asked the WPIAL to join its league, but the WPIAL turned down Westinghouse’s request. It doesn’t matter if there is security or a police presence at Ringgold football games. The key for fourth-year coach Matt Humbert is he always has had the Law on his side.Humbert has enjoyed success in his four years as Ringgold’s coach, and one of the keys is there has been a Law under center. Quad Law played quarterback for the Rams in Humbert’s first two years when the Rams were a combined 17-4. Now, Law’s younger, Nico, is the Rams’ QB.They are turning Ringgold into a Law school.After going only 4-6 last season, Ringgold is 3-1 this year heading into a big game tonight at West Mifflin. For the second year in a row, Pittsburgh City League football will be a nice little six pack.With the closure of Oliver, Peabody, Langley and Schenley in recent years, the City League is down six teams. Last year was the first season with only six teams and Perry defeated University Prep for the title.One of the problems with having only six teams is that teams have experienced some trouble getting a nine-game schedule. Last year was the first year that the WPIAL scheduled all nine games for WPIAL teams. In the past, the WPIAL did not schedule season openers. It was up to WPIAL schools to play whoever they wanted. While there was plenty to focus in on Saturday including the WPIAL Class AA Wrestling Championships, the WPIAL Class AAA Wrestling Sectionals, the WPIAL Class AAA Diving Championships and the WPIAL Basketball Quarterfinals, there were other titles decided on the final weekend in February. To make the playoffs in the Pittsburgh City League, teams must finish in the top four spots. With the size of the City League now, only two teams will NOT make the playoffs. With school closures in the past few years, this is the smallest the City League has ever been. Langley and Oliver closed after the 2011-12 school year. That leaves the City League with only six teams. The league joins the WPIAL in some sports this year, but City League officials wanted to remain intact for football. University Prep won the City League title in its first year of existence last year. Here is a look at the City League:
