The WPIAL Basketball Championships are moving up Forbes Avenue to Oakland. The WPIAL Board of Control voted yesterday to take the 2016 and 2017 title games to the Petersen Events Center on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh.
The Championships have been played at Duquesne University’s A.J. Palumbo Center since 1995. Pitt has hosted the Championships before, first at the Fitzgerald Field House and most recently in 2006, when five title games were played at the Petersen Events Center due to a scheduling conflict with Duquesne.
The move also means a lot more seating. The Palumbo Center seats 4,400, while capacity is 12,500 at the Petersen Events Center. Tickets for the championship games have been limited, with little to none available at the door for the Boys Quad-A title games featuring New Castle and Hampton the last two years.
The fee to rent the Palumbo Center has also increased, allowing the WPIAL to seek bids to go elsewhere. Duquesne, Pitt and California University of Pennsylvania submitted bids for the title games.
