Week seven marks the official beginning of the stretch run in the WPIAL football season. To that point, the slate provided some of the most compelling and crucial matchups of the 2015 campaign. The latest collection of top plays includes two games that could determine a section champion, another tilt that included a team fighting to remain in the playoff picture, and also a rare matchup of top teams in two different classifications. Without further anticipation, here are the very best plays from week seven.

Freeport 32, Deer Lakes 25

The Yellowjackets and Lancers have both enjoyed a resurgence in Class AA this season, so it was fitting that their Allegheny Conference clash came down to the final play. After the Yellowjackets took a one-point lead late in the fourth quarter, Deer Lakes moved the ball within field goal range with 13 seconds left. The attempt for the winning kick was thwarted by Freeport, though, as the Yellowjackets blocked the 32-yard attempt and returned it the distance to seal the triumph in the final regular-season game at Swartz Field.

MSA Sports’ Matt Vandriak and James Dotson provided the call for the wild finish:

Woodland Hills 22, West Allegheny 15

When the Wolverines and Indians met in a marquee matchup between Class Quad-A and AAA last year, the Indians scored a thrilling overtime victory because of a special teams mishap by Woodland Hills. The rematch this year pitted the top ranked teams in their respective classifications, but this time, it was a spectacular special teams play by the Wolverines that led them to victory. Jaymond Dunn’s 97-yard kickoff return in the fourth quarter allowed Woodland Hills to turn a one-point deficit into a game-winning score.

Woodland Hills Sport Networks’ Adam Gusky and Fred Guy on WZUM-AM 1550 provide the commentary for the thrilling score:

Chartiers-Houston 18, Brentwood 14

The Bucs, in the thick of the Class A Black Hills Conference playoff picture, appeared headed for a crushing defeat to Brentwood. Trailing 14-3 in the final quarter, though, Chartiers-Houston scored 15 unanswered points. The Buccaneers recovered a fumble on their own 2-yard-line, and then TJ Johson connected with Tyrone Wormsley on the ensuing snap for a 98-yard score, a momentum-shifting play that ultimately sparked their comeback.

WJPA-AM 1450’s Mark Uriah and Bill Dukett have the call of the incredible score that spanned nearly the entire length of the field:

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 26, Avonworth 14

The Antelopes scored an upset of the Trojans in last year’s Class A semifinals matchup, but this season, Cardinal Wuerl notched a measure of revenge. The Trojans kept their perfect mark in tact, in large part to a strong first half. Midway through the second quarter, CWNC’s Erick Taylor connected with Khalil Weathers on a 46-yard pass that put the Trojans ahead 12-0, a lead they would never relinquish.

MSA Sports’ Rick Smith and Greg Kuntz detail the key touchdown play:
