WPIAL Plays of the Week – Week Seven 2013

The start of the stretch run brought on tight scores (8 games decided by 7 points or less, in fact), dramatic finishes, multiple overtimes and meaningful victories for playoff clinchings and positioning. Week Seven was all you could ask for and it’s only going to get better as we head into Week Eight. Here are your top plays from Week Seven:

#1 Seneca Valley 24, North Hills 17 (2OT)

Trailing 10-7 and facing a 4th and 6 from the North Hills 36-yard line, Seneca Valley QB T.J. Holl would roll out and lob a jump ball towards the endzone. The prayer would be answered by the hands of Max Cicero, who hauled in the football at the 1-yard line with 1:19 left in the game. The North Hills defense would hold, but the Raiders were able to kick the game-tying field goal and go on to win double-overtime. With the win, Seneca Valley will now be the second place team out of the Northern Eight Conference and will host a playoff game in the first round of the 2013 WPIAL Playoffs.

#2 Peters Township 39, Mt. Lebanon 35

Peters Township and Mt. Lebanon both needed a win. But the Indians’ Quarterback Cory Owen just wanted it more than anyone. Despite going 0-for-4 through the air, Owen was absolutely dominant. He rushed for 178 yards and scored four times, including a big 4th quarter run of 32 yards that helped put away a pesky Blue Devils bunch. The win is particularly important for Peters, who now owns head-to-head tiebreakers over Baldwin and Mt. Lebanon for the final playoff spot from the Southeastern Conference.

#3 West Allegheny 37, New Castle 31

For the majority of the season, the Parkway Conference has been looked at as a battle of two teams: West Allegheny and Central Valley. But on Friday, New Castle pushed the top-ranked Indians to their limits, nearly pulling off a significant AAA upset. But, up 30-25 and in need of a game-icing drive, Tory Delmonico would come up big, breaking off a 46-yard run to put it away. West Allegheny stays unbeaten and in line for the top seed in the WPIAL Playoffs.

#4 Upper St. Clair 28, Bethel Park 13

Another big battle in the Southeastern Conference again showcased the unbelievable Upper St. Clair defense, which had not allowed a point since Week One. Despite Bethel Park being able to crack the shutout streak, it was the Panthers that clicked on the offensive side, putting up 28 points on a stout Blackhawks defense. The highlight play was a 32-yard scamper by Stephen Mackowiak to give USC an insurmountable 28-6 lead.

#5 West Mifflin 21, Indiana 14

The WPIAL’s leading rusher wasn’t going to let his team be upset by a very game Indiana squad. Jimmy Wheeler rushed for 215 yards and West Mifflin overcame a 14-0 deficit to take down Indiana 21-14 in a non-Conference test. Down 14-13 in the 4th Quarter, Wheeler would break off a 26-yard touchdown run with 8:19 to play, propelling the Titans to the win. Wheeler now has 1788 yards this season, is averaging 9.2 yards per carry and has scored a WPIAL-high 23 touchdowns.
