Week three of the WPIAL football season produced some classic moments that could loom large for the rest of the season. This installment includes the upset of a top-ranked team, a winning score in overtime, and two massive interceptions that determined the outcome of games. Take a listen, and for the first time this season, a look at the top plays from this past week.
1. North Allegheny 24, Central Catholic 17
The Vikings boast more Division I talent than any WPIAL team in recent memory, and even received some consideration to be ranked nationally. Central Catholic was in a battle with North Allegheny, though, and in the final minute, the Tigers made a play that helped them score a signature win. Riley Trueman’s 27-yard touchdown run propelled North Allegheny to the upset victory.
North Allegheny Sports Network’s Randy Gore and Rick Meister have the call:
2. Hampton 9, Gateway 3
The Talbots and Gators engaged in a defensive struggle on Friday, with the Talbots scoring the only touchdown of the contest. Gateway produced a late drive and threatened to tie or take the lead, but Matt Rech’s interception on the goal line preserved the victory for Hampton in this Greater Allegheny Conference clash.
Hampton Talbots Sports Network’s Dennis Fischer provides the commentary for the game’s decisive play:
3. Ambridge 27, Moon 21 (OT)
With Moon and Ambridge locked in an overtime battle, the Tigers’ offense took the field first in the extra period. A first-play fumble was recovered by the Bridgers, however, which set the stage for Jordan Taylor’s 10-yard scamper to give Ambridge the victory.
MSA Sports’ Rob Matzie and Johnny Lee on WKPL-FM 92.1 The Pickle have the call on the game-winning score:
4. Clairton 44, Greensburg Central Catholic 7
The final score indicates a lopsided victory for the Bears, but the outcome was far from decided late in the first half. Trailing by just one score, the Centurions drove deep into Clairton territory, and appeared poised to tie or grab the lead. Tommy Pellis fired into the end zone, but Clairton’s Aaron Mathews picked off the pass and returned it 100 yards for a Bears’ touchdown. This play swung the momentum heavily in Clairton’s favor, and the Bears never looked back.
MSA Sports Paul Paterra and Lou Rood have the call at the 1:07:20 mark of the MSA Sports Friday Night Spotlight game:
