Norwin’s first mistake came after a 72-yard kickoff return by junior Billy Kerston to the Bethel Park 10. On fourth-and-goal from the 1, running back Jayvon Thrift, fighting for yards, lost a fumble that Volpatti recovered in the end zone.

Highlands defense shines in conference win over rival Knoch
Highlands (2-1, 2-1) snapped a six-game losing streak to Knoch, its local rival, beating the Knights for the first time since 2008. It was the Golden Rams’ first home victory in the series since 2006.

“Every opportunity we tried to grab,” said Mars senior Anthony Greico, who recovered two fumbles Friday night in a sloppy 26-15 victory over Montour in the Northwest Nine. “We did everything we could to win.”

After trailing 7-0 in the first quarter, Brashear (2-2, 1-2) buckled down and pitched a shutout, limiting Westinghouse (2-1, 1-1) to just 57 yards of offense in the second half.

Plum hands Franklin Regional football 1st defeat
The Mustangs found the end zone five times and rallied from an early deficit to upend the Panthers, 33-7, in a matchup of Big East 9 neighboring rivals.

Armstrong leads Latrobe past Kiski Area
Senior quarterback/linebacker Jason Armstrong led the Wildcats with 246 passing yards and two touchdowns. He also scored on a keeper and returned an interception 33 yards as Latrobe knocked off Kiski Area, 37-21, at Vandergrift’s Davis Field.

Thomas Jefferson starts quickly, overwhelms Greensburg Salem
The top-ranked Jaguars hit a 78-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the game, turned a quick fumble into points seconds later and rolled to 48-0 victory over Greensburg Salem in a Class 4A Big Nine Conference game at Offutt Field.

Derry football tears through Southmoreland
Derry scored two touchdowns in a 10-second span early in the second quarter Friday en route to a 48-7 defeat of host Southmoreland.

McGUFFEY 28, MT. PLEASANT 21

Former Mt. Pleasant coach Ed Dalton leads McGuffey to OT win over Vikings
Marshall Whipkey threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Brandan Crowe in overtime, and the McGuffey defense held Mt. Pleasant on fourth down on the Vikings’ possession in the extra period to preserve the victory.

CENTRAL CATHOLIC 42, HEMPFIELD 14

Central Catholic’s Fisher leads way against Hempfield
Vikings quarterback Troy Fisher’s 39-yard run set up a Dontre Jones 3-yard touchdown to break the tie. After Hempfield went three and out, Corey Thomas made a diving catch of a Fisher pass for a 43-yard touchdown.

North Hills overcomes pesky Fox Chapel football for Allegheny 9 win
Fox Chapel turned the ball over six times, dropping a 31-17 contest to North Hills in a Class 5A Allegheny 9 game at James M. Burk Stadium.

Seton LaSalle RB Deanes uses 2nd-half surge to hold off Burrell
Burrell held Deanes to only 21 yards in the first half before the running back took over the game in the second half as No. 3 Seton LaSalle defeated the Bucs, 35-19, in the WPIAL Class 3A Allegheny Conference Friday at Peters Township.

KEYSTONE OAKS 35, DEER LAKES 0

Dauer’s 4 touchdowns lead Keystone Oaks past Deer Lakes
Keystone Oaks running back Michael Dauer led the Golden Eagles to a 35-0 win over Deer Lakes in a WPIAL Class 3A Allegheny Conference showdown. The junior had more than 250 all-purpose yards with four touchdowns.

BISHOP CANEVIN 28, LEECHBURG 7

Leechburg gives up TD on 1st play, falls to Bishop Canevin in Eastern Conference game
The Blue Devils (0-4, 0-3) struggled from the start, surrendering a touchdown to the Crusaders (1-2, 1-1) on the first play from scrimmage: a 39-yard run by senior running back Zach Trusky. The score marked the first points scored by Bishop Canevin this season.

Aliquippa routs Freeport behind passing game
The Quips, who also are ranked No. 1 in the Tribune-Review rankings, scored four touchdowns in the first quarter and didn’t look back on their way to a 50-0 nonconference victory at Carl A. Aschman Memorial Stadium.

Beth-Center pulls away from Springdale to remain undefeated
The Bulldogs rattled off 27 unanswered points until Springdale ended its scoring drought with a field goal from Logan Panza with 10 seconds left in the half. The score entering halftime was 33-10.

STEEL VALLEY 40, VALLEY 14

No. 1 Steel Valley shows off passing game in win over Valley
The Ironmen, defending PIAA Class 2A champs and ranked No. 1 this year, pulled out to an early lead and pushed through for a 40-14 nonconference win Friday over visiting Valley.

BELLE VERNON 17, RINGGOLD 14

Jared Hartman scored on a 7-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter and No. 3 Belle Vernon’s defense made it stand in its Big 9 Conference win over Ringgold (1-2, 1-2). Logan Pfrogner scored on a 36-yard punt return for Belle Vernon (3-0, 3-0), which also got points on a 34-yard field goal by Cameron Guess. Bo Haines ran for one touchdown and threw for another to pace Ringgold.

CLAIRTON 38, GREENSBURG CENTRAL CATHOLIC 0

Devlin Clifford and Tre’sean Howard scored on interception returns of 76 and 49 yards, respectively, as top-ranked Clairton (3-0, 3-0) shut out Greensburg Central Catholic (1-3, 0-2) in Eastern Conference play. Howard also rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns and quarterback Brendan Parsons threw for 144 yards and a TD.

FORT CHERRY 33, MONESSEN 6

Monessen fell to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the Class A Tri-County South after a loss to Fort Cherry (2-1, 1-1).

HOPEWELL 47, YOUGH 27

Tyler Sabo returned the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown and added a TD on a 65-yard fumble return as Hopewell (3-1) defeated Yough (0-4) in nonconference play. Deshaun Sanders ran for 136 yards and two touchdowns. Dustin Shoaf paced Yough with 204 rushing yards and three TDs. Yough led by one at the half.

PENN-TRAFFORD 34 at WOODLAND HILLS 8

John Gay ran for 166 yards and two touchdown and Caleb Lisbon added 147 rushing yards and a TD to lead Class 5A No. 2 Penn-Trafford to a 34-8 nonconference victory over Woodland Hills (1-3) at the Wolvarena. Cam Laffoon threw for 127 yards and one touchdown for Penn-Trafford (4-0).

LIGONIER VALLEY 42, PENNS MANOR 0

Aaron Sheeder ran for 140 yards and a touchdown and Jackson Daugherty added 119 rushing yards and two TDs as Ligonier Valley (4-0, 4-0) blanked Penns Manor (1-3, 1-3) in the Heritage Conference. John Caldwell added 123 passing yards and a rushing touchdown for Ligonier Valley.
