MSA Sports Ranks the WPIAL Baseball Playoff Teams
May 10, 2011
The 2011 WPIAL Baseball Playoff field is set with 15 teams in Class AAAA and Class AA, 13 teams in both Class AAA and Class A. The brackets will be unveiled by the WPIAL on Friday with the playoffs set to start next week. MSA Sports throws its one and a half cents onto the pitching mound by ranking all of the playoff teams.

Norwins Rocco Amendola Wins WBCA John Challis Memorial Award

The WPIAL Baseball Coaches Association (WBCA) has announced that Rocco Amendola, a senior at Norwin High School, is the recipient of the third annual John Challis Memorial Award. Rocco will be honored at the WBCA's Awards Banquet on June 10, 2011 at the Airport Marriott.

India McCoy is bar hopping like few girls have in the history of the WPIAL. McCoy is only a sophomore at Ambridge, but she already has established herself as one of the best high jumpers in league history. On Friday night at the Baldwin Invitational, McCoy tied a meet record by clearing 5 feet 8 inches.

The decision might come as a surprise to some because college interest was starting to pick up in Mason, who led the WPIAL in scoring last season at 33.3 points and scored 64 in one game. Butler University coach Brad Stevens came to watch Mason work out at Highlands last week and requested grade transcripts on Mason. No scholarship offer was made.

It was in the mid 1970s and young Riverside High School baseball coach Dan Oliastro drafted a letter of resignation. There are 500 reasons why Riverside is glad Oliastro never handed in that letter to the school board. On Thursday, Oliastro won his 500th career game as Riversides coach when the Panthers defeated Beaver Falls, 4-0, in a WPIAL Class AA Section 5 game.

Altoona Curve Win First Ever Eastern League Championship

The Altoona Curve clinched its first Eastern League Championship in its 12-year existence with a, 5-2, win over the Trenton Thunder on Saturday night at Waterfront Park. Tony Watson (2-0) notched the win while Jim Negrych went 3-for-5 with three RBI.

2010 Season Ends for Washington Wild Things With Another Loss

Brandon Howard's two-run, eighth-inning double off Eryk McConnell was the difference tonight as the Washington Wild Things fell to the Traverse City Beach Bums 4-3 in their season finale. For the first time all series, the teams experienced good weather, having battled wind and rain in the previous two games at Wuerfel Park.
