MSA Sports Top Ten – WPIAL Boys Basketball Playoff Rankings 2016
February 8, 2016
Our final WPIAL Boys Basketball Top 10 rankings of the season is not really a true rankings, just like the WPIAL Steering Committee doesn't truly rank the teams when putting the brackets together. Sure, the top eights teams are according to perceived rankings, but then a lot of what follows the rest of the way is more fill in the blanks to avoid teams from the same section meeting in Round One. Throw in Preliminary Round games like we'll see in Class AAA and Class AA, and then you really have to dance around to avoid Preliminary and First Round games against teams from the same section. The First Round seed matchups break out this way in this order.

WPIAL Alum Q&A – Micah Mason
The storied history of basketball in the WPIAL has produced some tremendous shooters, but perhaps nobody has been a better marksman than Micah Mason. Mason, formerly of Highlands High School and current with Duquesne University, is the subject of this week's WPIAL Alum Q&A. Mason made an instant impact with the Highlands Golden Rams, as he scored 23 points in his first varsity game in helping his squad upset a highly-ranked Penn Hills team. From that point going forward, Mason rewrote the record books, finishing with 2,272 points in his storied career. Perhaps more impressively, Mason set the all-time WPIAL mark for most made three-pointers, besting a total previously held by T.J. McConnell.

Cali Konek’s scoring average has opened eyes across WPIAL girls basketball, and here is another startling statistical fact from the freshman guard at Imani Christian: Konek has a good chance to become the first WPIAL girl to score 1,000 points in a season. And she might reach the milestone in the regular season. Scoring 1,000 points in the regular season seems surreal, but Konek already has 873 points and Imani Christian has three games left this week (Monday, Wednesday and Thursday). Konek averages 45.9 points a game. So if she gets her average, she will break 1,000 points.

WPIAL Alum Q&A – Seairra Barrett
Seairra Barrett was one of the top basketball players in the WPIAL in recent memory during her accomplished career at Central Valley. Similarly, Barrett was one of the region's top volleyball players, as well, for the Warriors. She was a four-year letterwinner and earned all-state honors in both sports. With a six-foot frame and uncanny jumping ability, Barrett has continued her playing career in both endeavors at California University of Pennsylvania.

Scholastic Notebook – 01/22/2016

There seems to be some question as to how good the top teams really are in WPIAL Class AA Section 4 basketball. Brownsville is 13-4, Charleroi 12-3 and Waynesburg 7-7. History makes you wonder about the strength of the teams. Among the three, there are a total of three WPIAL titles and only one in the past 50-plus years. Brownsville won a championship in 2001 while Charleroi won titles in 1940 and 1958. On top of that, no one from the section has done much in the playoffs in recent history. But while many may question the strength of the teams in the section, there is no question that Section 4 is where the scorers reside.

Maybe just call this a saga of Penn-manship. Jim Rocco resigned in the spring as the boys basketball coach at Penn Hills High School in order to become coach at Penn-Trafford. He is enjoying success at his new job. Dan DeRose took over for Rocco at Penn Hills. DeRose came to Penn Hills from South Park, and DeRose is enjoying success at his new job. So it’s two new coaches at two schools with Penn as the first name. This really is a Jim Dan-dy story. At Penn-Trafford, the Warriors are 10-4 under Rocco, who won two WPIAL titles and one PIAA championship in his 19 years at Penn Hills. Penn-Trafford is tied for second place in Class AAAA Section 1.
