OK, let's clear the air on what the WPIAL Football steering committee will do on Monday. They will NOT rank the teams, they will seed them. Big Difference. They attempt to determine the top 2, then the top 4 and then the top 8 teams in each classification.However in football, sometimes their hands are tied based on home field advantage for the top 8 seeds. For example, you could make the argument that Neshannock is the fourth best team in Class A. But you can't seed the Lancers in the top eight because they are on the road with an 8-1 record after tie-breaker points and head-to-head gave the top two spots in the Class A Big 7 Conference to Sto-Rox and Rochester.So sometimes the committee has to be creative. One team was playing for playoff positioning and a chance to finish as high as third place instead of sixth place while the other was home for one final game playing for pride and bragging rights against an arch-rival. That was the setup for the final Saturday of the 2012 WPIAL football regular season and the lightest day of the season with only two games on the docket. Here are the latest WPIAL and Pittsburgh City League football standings through Week Nine of the 2012 high school football season. Standings are updated after each game on Thursday, Friday and Saturday's scholastic gridiron action each week. Some of the games held great meaning in the district playoff picture, others were just playing for pride. Whether there was intense pressure or with very little at stake, here are the Primetime Performances from the final Friday of the regular season in the WPIAL.Patrick Turner - Kiski Area2012 has been the year of the great turn-around for several programs in the WPIAL, including that of Kiski Area. Patrick Turner helped complete the comeback season, rushing for 101 yards and scoring four touchdowns on three runs and a 61-yard fumble return for a score as the Cavalier, 1-8 in 2011, improved to 4-5 this season by clinching a Class AAAA Foothills Conference playoff spot with a 41-14 victory over the host Latrobe Wildcats.WPIAL Week Nine Saturday Football Scores 2012
And then there were two. What was the quietest Saturday of the WPIAL regular season actually doubled because of a water main break on Friday. One game helped determine the final playoff order in the Class AAA Big Nine Conference while the other was a battle for Beaver County pride. The MSA Sports 'Stretch Run' to the 2012 WPIAL football regular season is nearly in the books. All the 64 playoff spots have been secured with the order in all 14 conferences now determined and finalized. Saying “it’s time to move on,” Chartiers Valley’s Chris Saluga will coached his final game with the Colts Friday night. Saluga has decided to resign as Chartiers Valley’s football coach, effective after Friday night’s game against West Allegheny. Saluga already has handed in his letter of resignation to the school board. “I don’t know how to say it, other than it’s just time for me to move on,” Saluga said. “I’ve done all I can here.”WPIAL and City League Week Nine Friday Football Scores
While the Pittsburgh City League has already reached it's short two-week postseason, the regular season was still the focus for one final Friday in 2012 for the WPIAL. While there will be no playoff clinchings in the five games set for the Eighth Saturday of the 2012 season, that doesn't mean the slate was filled with meaningless games. Shady Side Academy tuned up with a win before next weeks win-and-your-in game at Kittanning in Week 9, however Avonworth was stunned on the road with a loss heading into their big showdown with rival Northgate next Friday. Stretch Run high school football action continued with another busy Friday in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Today we focus not just on the biggest numbers put up on the Eighth Friday of this 2012 campaign, but on those top outings in games with big stakes...some ended long postseason droughts while others kept their team alive to fight another week or sealed the deal on one of the top spots in their conference. There are 64 cars that will head out and ride in two weeks on the Highway to Heinz. So far through seven weeks, more than half (34) of those vehicles have clinched their ticket to ride. Many more joined them tonight on the Eighth Friday of the high school football season. One week down, two remaining in the MSA Sports 'Stretch Run' to the 2012 WPIAL football regular season. Over the final two weeks, you will hear plenty of talk with these words and phrases: Conference champions; Home field advantage; Playoff positioning; Staying alive; Controlling your own destiny; wild card and of course, the dreaded Gardner points. More than half of the Field of 64 has clinched through seven weeks with 34 playoff berths wrapped up and 28 more up for grabs in Weeks 8 and 9 before we take off on the Highway to Heinz.
