The Stretch Run of the 2012 WPIAL football regular season concludes with Week Nine this week here on the MSA Sports Network. Five games made up the next-to-the-last Saturday high school football schedule in the WPIAL. While two potential playoff teams were involved, there was more Pride talk than Playoff talk when it came to the scholastic gridiron action on this third Saturday in October. While there will be no playoff clinchings in the five games set for the Eighth Saturday of the 2012 season, that doesn't mean the slate was filled with meaningless games. Shady Side Academy tuned up with a win before next weeks win-and-your-in game at Kittanning in Week 9, however Avonworth was stunned on the road with a loss heading into their big showdown with rival Northgate next Friday. Stretch Run high school football action continued with another busy Friday in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Today we focus not just on the biggest numbers put up on the Eighth Friday of this 2012 campaign, but on those top outings in games with big stakes...some ended long postseason droughts while others kept their team alive to fight another week or sealed the deal on one of the top spots in their conference. There are 64 cars that will head out and ride in two weeks on the Highway to Heinz. So far through seven weeks, more than half (34) of those vehicles have clinched their ticket to ride. Many more joined them tonight on the Eighth Friday of the high school football season. It was a bloated Saturday of WPIAL football action with seven games on the docket. So since we are in Stetch Run mode, we don't have to feel guilty about enjoying extra pleasures and get a little bloated on great performances from the Seventh Saturday of the season.Connor Slomka and Ernest Williams - Pine-RichlandLike any great duo through the years, one delivers the early shots while the other comes in and finishes the deal. That was the story of the Pine-Richland ground attack Saturday at Shaler as Connor Slomka rushed for 163 yards and two first half scores, while Ernest Williams came in and ran for 101 yards and two second half scores as the Rams beat the Titans 49-6 in a Class AAAA Northern Seven Conference contest.Scholastic Notebook – 10/13/2012

This weekend begins the MSA Sports 'Stretch Run' to the 2012 WPIAL football regular season. Welcome to Week 7 of the high school football season. Chick’s Picks, in her travels this week, noticed several signs for an annual UFO Conference scheduled to take place in the area. Week 7 of the College Football season continues with some good match ups this weekend. Conference play rolls on in the NEC, PSAC and PAC, along with the WVIAC and the NCAC.Here are previews of All the games, including 3 that can be heard right here on the Network:Slippery Rock(2-4) at Clarion(3-3) 1pm on WLER 97.7-FM and the MSA Sports Network Both teams are 1-2 in PSAC West divisional play. Slippery Rock leads the all-time series 47-23-3 and has won the last 6 meetings. SRU lost last week to IUP 33-18. The Rock has dropped 3 straight games. The “stretch-run” is here. The final third of the 2012 season starts this weekend and you can be sure MSA will provide the finest escort to you as you get set to embark on your own personal “Highway to Heinz”. With the two largest classifications each taking a wild-card into the post season the super –knowledge that Don Rebel doles out each Friday night will save you tons of sleep.
