WPIAL Semifinals Soccer Saturday Summaries

On a day that felt more like an early season matchup, the WPIAL soccer Semifinals were played under sunny and comfortable conditions on the final step to the district championships. All eight of the top-seeds made it through to Round Three, and while the girls top-seeds all swept through into the Finals, three of the four #1-seeds on the boys side were bounced out of the title chase. Here are recaps from the 16 Semifinals games played on Saturday, 15 of which can be heard archived here on the MSA Sports Network. It was a first-time occurrence earlier this season when Armstrong’s Zane Dudek, Clairton’s Lamont Wade and Steel Valley’s DeWayne Murray all surpassed 5,000 career yards rushing. Of the 19 running backs in WPIAL history who ran for 5,000, Dudek, Wade and Murray were the first trio to do it in the same year. But that trio isn’t just settling at 5,000. The final seven days of the tenth month of the year heats up as the mercury drops as the fall sports postseason kicks into full gear this week here on the MSA Sports Network. For the first time in WPIAL history, there could be a Lady in the football playoffs. No, it’s not a female player or coach. It’s the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart team. The Chargers started playing WPIAL football in 2010 and failed to make the postseason in the first six years of the program. OLSH could turn out to be one of the big turnaround stories in the WPIAL this season. The Chargers did not win a game last year, going 0-9. Now they are 5-2 overall and 4-2 in the Big Seven Conference. They are almost assured of a playoff berth, with games remaining against Sto-Rox and Shenango. Rochester leads the conference at 6-0, Northgate is 5-1 and OLSH and Sto-Rox are tied at 4-2. Shenango is fifth at 3-3.FINAL 2016 WPIAL Boys Soccer Standings

At a glance, the Penn State Behrend's men's soccer roster could easily be confused with a travel club of former WPIAL notables. With 25 players who hail from the district on a very successful Lions team, many could be candidates for the WPIAL Alum Q&A. Former South Park standout Evan Augustine, a senior defender, is among the very best for the squad, though. Dominance thy name was Penn-Trafford on the "pitch" Saturday afternoon as the Warriors downed the Gateway Gators 3-0 at a sun-soaked Penn-Trafford High School. The score doesn't even give a fair indication as to how Penn-Trafford (15-1) dominated the game, as the majority of the play took place on the Gateway side of the field. While it was Senior Recognition Day at Warriors Stadium, all of the scoring game from PT juniors. Austin Kreutzberger started the scoring at the 23:01 mark of the first half with a goal, then tallied another at 11:40. At least in two respects, there has never been a fall sports season like this at Derry Area High School. The Derry football team is perfect and the girls soccer team is headed to the postseason. No one has ever been able to say those two things before. Derry’s football team is 7-0. The last time Derry was 7-0 was 1983. That year, the Trojans lost their eighth game to Greensburg Central Catholic. Derry will try to go 8-0 with a win against Ellwood City Friday. Derry has never had a regular season with a perfect record. It seems dual-threat quarterbacks are all the rage in high school football these days, from Western Pennsylvania to all around the country. Just take a look at the leading rushers in the WPIAL to see the effects that dual-threat QBs are having. Among the top 25 rushers in the WPIAL, four are quarterbacks – and two of the top seven are quarterbacks. Beaver quarterback Darius Wise is third in the WPIAL in rushing with 1,093 yards. Burrell’s Max Garda is seventh with 791. Wise is averaging 11 yards a carry. After those two, McGuffey’s Marcus Czulewicz is 15th with 702 yards rushing and North Allegheny’s Ethan Maenza 23rd with 584 yards, and he missed a game with an injury.MSA Sports Top Ten – WPIAL Boys Soccer – 10/06/2016
