2011 has been a tremendous year in high school sports in the WPIAL. It was a year where some familiar champions wore the golden crown again while some new faces surfaced in the championship picture. After being blanked on Day One on Friday, Saturday turned out to be a golden day for four WPIAL swimmers at the 2011 PIAA Class AAA Swimming and Diving championships at Bucknell University. Oakland Catholic's Leah Smith set a record in the 500-yard freestyle while Kristen Murslack of Pine-Richland won gold in the 100-yard breaststroke.Shady Side Academy Golden in PIAA Class AA Boys Swimming; West A Girls Runner-Up

After finishing close for so many years, the Shady Side Academy boys team has finally reached the top of the state Class AA swimming mountain. The Indians swam their way to a state title Wednesday and Thursday at Bucknell University by beating runner-up Fairview by 27 points. Indiana was the only other WPIAL team to finish in the top ten overall with 8th place.There are New Sheriffs in the WPIAL AA Pool as Indiana Boys and West Allegheny Girls Swim to Gold

The Indiana boys swim team held a slim 9 point advantage over perennial power Shady Side Academy heading into the final event - the Boys 400 yd. Freestyle Relay.USC Dethrones NA Boys while North Allegheny Girls Still Queens of the WPIAL AAA Pool
While there will be swimming gold heading back to North Allegheny High School, the Tigers could not double their pleasure. The North Allegheny girls won their third straight WPIAL Class AAA team swimming title, but the boys string of five straight was snapped Friday afternoon at Trees Pool. With Samantha Pickens and her three year stranglehold on the WPIAL Girls Class AAA diving title gone to the University of Arizona, there was opportunity today at Pine-Richland High School. For the second year in a row, Uniontown senior Jonathan Jones walked away golden from the WPIAL AA Diving Championships Friday afternoon at South Park High School. The Bucknell recruit will get another preview of his future college when he and five other seniors represent the WPIAL at Bucknell University in the PIAA Championships.Riverside’s Jenny Ard is The Golden Girl in WPIAL Girls AA Diving Finals
For Jenny Ard, this has been a long time coming. Ard, the senior, has finished in fourth place in the WPIAL AA Diving Championships two years in a row, but was able to overtake Kathleen Dunst during the final round of competition to bring the gold medal back to Riverside Friday afternoon at South Park High School.
